The Marketing of Low Carb Foods

Low carb diets seem to be the fast track to losing weight and with the popularity of Atkins and South Beach, it's no wonder the diet industry is loving the craze. As recently as last week one of my friends tweeted the praises of a low carb diet contributing to her weight loss. And while for the short term low carb may provide quicker results, thinner doesn't always mean healthier when you follow this diet track. Due to the way low carb foods and diet products are marketed, many times consumers are misguided to believe that what you "read" on the front of the package is what you get...and that's not always true.

Think about it, how many times are we rushed in the market only glancing at the front of the package to deliver us the information we need to make a quick, and what we believe to be, informed decision? How often have you taken the time to not only read the front of the label, but the nutrition facts panel on the back as well? If you are anything like me, not as often as you should. And due to a recent study by the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, we're not alone.

Just because it says low carb doesn't mean nutrition and caloric-wise that it is beneficial. So take the time to look beyond the front label, or low carb marketing hype, directly to the nutrition facts when shopping for products to manage your weight.

Wellness & Nutrition Communications: Sodium Awareness

Recent government sodium intake guidelines only re-confirms what those in the health industry have been proposing for a while. Cut back on the salt or your health is at risk. I know at Pierce Mattie PR we are always on the hunt for the latest salt-like alternative.

Those with hypertension, chronic kidney disease or who have diabetes, as well as African Americans, are suggested to cut back their sodium intake to just a half a teaspoon per day. Anyone 51 or older are also recommended to follow the guideline. While those who are considered in good health are suggested to only have a teaspoon per day of sodium.

For food companies already marketing low-sodium foods, this new government guideline may help to provide a boost in sales. Not to mention publicity that will put another positive spin on their products.

AlsoSalt, a salt substitute, has a great list of low sodium foods on their website, as well as an explanation of low sodium food labels. You can also find the Pocket Guide to Low Sodium Foods here as well.

Will you be cutting back on your salt intake? Tweet us your response @PierceMattiePR.

The Nutrition & Wellness Marketing of Oatmeal

I can remember back when I was around 7, my mother used to always fix me a bowl of oatmeal before school. I found the taste rather odd and I used to always say,”Mom why am I eating this?”

She would respond back saying,”Because it's good for you.”

How many times have we heard that? Well after I grew up, I found out that she wasn't kidding. Oatmeal is actually really good for you. There are many variations of oats: rolled oats, steel oats and crushed oats to name a few. The most common variation of oat that Americans intake is known as rolled oat and is usually associated with breakfast.

What makes oatmeal so great is that it is rich in dietary fibers which is imperative for our diets. Not many people get there recommended fiber intake and thus products like Activia, Fiber One and even McDonald's new oatmeal have emerged. Having high fiber is crucial because it can help lower your cholesterol. While we at Pierce Mattie have recently noticed a few aspiring nutrition bloggers bashing oatmeal, we ask – can you suggest something better for breakfast? We don’t think so.

Fitness PR: FAGE Greek Yogurt

Within the past two years or so, Greek yogurt has become a foodie trend and the superstar of the dairy aisle. For some, it’s an acquired taste…but it’s definitely worth trying. The slightly cheesy, slightly sweet flavor of Greek yogurt is a guilt-free option, as it’s completely devoid of sugar and packed with protein.

Greek yogurt was once a commodity in the US, but now consumers are met with a wide array of choices at the food store. Fage (pronounced “fa-yeh”) Greek yogurt is the leader in its field, bringing high-quality, authentic Greek yogurt to the States directly from Athens. With over 85 years of rich history both abroad and in our own country, Fage has remained dedicated to high-quality products that promote a healthy lifestyle.

Fitness PR: Yoplait Greek Yogurt

Greek Yogurt seems to be the healthy snack of choice lately. A few weeks ago, I discussed the popularity of Fage Greek yogurt, and now everyone’s favorite yogurt brand is jumping on the bandwagon. Yoplait recently released a new line of Greek yogurt products that promise to satisfy hunger without any extra calories.

It’s no surprise why Yoplait is joining in on the trend. Greek yogurt is chock-full of protein, the ultimate body fuel and the foundation for building strong muscles. Studies have also found that the protein-packed snack may keep your body satisfied for longer, so you’ll be less apt to make unhealthy snacking choices throughout the day. Especially for those who are watching their weight (bathing suit season is quickly approaching), it’s a great diet snack that doesn’t taste “diet” at all.

Nutritionists recommend fat-free, protein-rich snacking options, and Yoplait’s new Greek yogurt certainly fits the bill. At 160 calories with zero calories from fat (yes, really zero), it’s a tasty little escape from your mundane snack choices. It’s packed with protein, too: each 6-oz cup contains 14 to 17 grams of it, with all the texture and flavor you expect in a Greek yogurt.

Entertainment PR: A&E's Heavy

For people who suffer from obesity, waking up everyday can be a challenge. The new hit show on A&E, captures the lives of two separate individuals who want to shed their weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The show is in its first season and has already captivated the hearts of anyone who watches.

Unlike some of the other familiar weight loss shows (hello, Biggest Loser), Heavy delves deeper into the issues that people face when it comes to their weight. Not only that, it illustrates some of the health conditions and consequences that the show's contestants have accumulated over the course of their weight gain. Some of the conditions they face are sleep apnea, high blood pressure and the inability to have children.

Heavy is not a show about obesity, it is a show about tranformational change. The people on this show want to change what they look like and what they have become. It's inspiring to witness at the end how hard work, determination and self control play a huge part in adjusting your weight. Tune in every Monday on A&E to witness this encouraging show about the everyday struggle of weight gain...and loss.

Lifestyle PR - Sweet & Skinny: 100 Recipes for Enjoying Life’s Sweeter Side

Desserts: the sweet temptations that propel dieters into a chocolatey downward spiral. For me, it’s always been the deal breaker with diets: one teensy little taste of dessert turns into a spoonful, then a second spoonful, and in no time flat that tiramisu has gone mysteriously missing. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Thanks to Marisa Churchill, there is a way to have your cake, eat it, and still be skinny at the end of the day! Her new cookbook, Sweet & Skinny, is chock-full of dessert recipes that won’t leave you feeling guilty. A longtime food lover and San Fran-area chef, Churchill combines years of experience as a pastry chef with her passion for fitness to create delicious desserts in under 30 minutes.

Churchill takes American baked goods classics and swaps out ingredients to cut some serious calories. The baking technique itself remains the same, resulting in decadent flavors that taste like they should be high-fat. It’s time to give in to your sweet-stuff cravings – thanks to Marisa Churchill, there’s finally a way to avoid the guilt factor.

The Dukan Diet by Pierre Dukan

The Dukan Diet – The Secret to How Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bundchen Lost their Post Baby Weight and to How Kate Middleton Looked Fabulous on her Wedding Day.

The Dukan Diet is a protein based diet designed by Dr. Pierre Dukan. It has been a bestseller in France for many years and has become a best seller across the globe after Carole Middleton introduced it to her daughter Kate, now Catherine, Dutchess of Cambridge, who lost two dress sizes for her big day (not that she really needed too!)

The diet does not control how much you eat, but focuses on a heavy protein intake. Like the Atkins Diet, the Dukan Diet is broken down into phases. The first phase, the Attack Phase, allows the dieter to eat only lean meats to boost the dieter’s metabolism. People generally lose 2-3 kilograms in 2-7 days because of their increased metabolism. The second phase, the Cruise Phase, adds 28 non-starchy vegetables to the lean protein diet. During this phase people will lose about 1 kg every week allowing the dieter to gradually achieve their targeted weight. The third phase, the Consolidation Phase, is aimed at preventing any future massive weight gain. It allows unlimited protein and vegetables every day with limited amounts of fruit, whole-grain bread, cheese and starch foods. It also gives the dieter 1-2 celebratory meals every week. The final phase, the Stabilization phase, is to ensure that the dieter maintains their target weight. The dieter must follow a few rules including eating only lean meat one day a week and eating oat bran a few times a week.

Wellness PR: Summer Solistice Yoga in Times Square

Last Tuesday, thousands of yogis joined together in Times Square for a celebration of Summer Solstice. Set on the longest day of the year, the daylong event marked the start of the new season. Hundreds stood side-by-side saluting the sun among the bustling activities of Times Square.

Registration was free for the event and enthusiasts from around the world jumped at the offer. For those who weren’t able to attend the session, they could easily tap into the event organizers website for a live streaming feed of the action.

‘Summer solstice’ is derived from the Latin meaning for the sun stands still. Tim Tompkins of the Times Square Alliance was quoted, "We're trying to create a little ocean or perhaps just a little lake or just a drop of serenity in the midst of all this madness. It's an attempt, on the longest day of the year, when the sun is shining brightest, to tap into that energy and have it help carry us through the rest of the year." The yoga class was titled ‘Mind Over Madness,’ an appropriate name for such a tranquil activity in what has been historically known as ‘the crossroads of the world.’ Free yoga mats were distributed to participants, courtesy of women’s sportswear company, Lucy Activewear.

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care Fits the Gluten Free Lifestyle

dr%20hauschka%20marketing.jpg

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, the leading organization in raising awareness for celiac disease and gluten intolerance, reports that 1 in 133 Americans has celiac disease. In those who suffer from this disease, gluten causes the immune system to damage the small intestine thereby impeding the absorption of essential food nutrients into the body.

At this time, the only remedy for celiac disease is to adhere to a 100% gluten-free diet. Many who live with the disease take the added precaution of maintaining a gluten-free home. Increased awareness and diagnosis has resulted in a significantly increased demand for gluten-free products, and the gluten-free marketplace is experiencing tremendous growth with global sales expected to reach more than $4.3 billion within the next five years. By 2014, the U.S. market is expected to grow by more than $500 million, comprising 53% of the global market.

Wellness PR: Fitness Expert Jillian Michaels Joins the Cast of The Doctors

The TV series The Doctors is becoming more and more popular since its original airdate in 2008. The show mainly focuses on medical and health issues, as well as providing discussions based on questions presented by various audience members. An emergency room physician hosts the 60-minute series, along with another trained physician, a pediatrician, obstetrician, and plastic surgeon. Another interesting aspect of the show that many viewers are unaware of, is that Phil McGraw, the host of Dr. Phil, created the hit show.

For their fourth season they have added on a new co-host whom we all admire - Jillian Michaels. Jillian Michaels is largely well known, particularly for her nutrition, weight-loss and coaching expertise. She became even more inspiring through training and coaching on the TV show, The Biggest Loser.

Not only has Michaels achieved these inspirational TV roles, but she has mounds of other accomplishments, such as; holding a black belt in martial arts, 2 personal trainer certificates from the leading certification programs in the United States - the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) and the American Fitness Association of America (AFAA), holds a nutrition and wellness consultant certificate with the American Fitness Professionals Associates (AFPA). Michaels has also written four bestselling books, such as; Making the Cut, Unlimited: How to Build and Exceptional Life, and more. In addition to her popular books, she has created countless workout and weight-loss DVDs that are listed as best sellers, like Ripped in 30, and Yoga Meltdown. She even has 3 video games the Wii system to help you with your fitness level!

Michaels is also actively involved in many charities by holding the position of the ambassador for the American Cancer Society, the ambassador for Stand Up 2 Cancer, and works on various programs to help stop childhood obesity.

I believe adding Jillian Michaels to The Doctors will boost ratings and add a component to the show that will create even more inspiration among viewers. Although Michaels is the only co-host that is not a certified doctor, she has an abundance of knowledge to share with us and to help us lead happier and healthier lives!

Check out their local listings on their website to find out when you can watch!

Dahn Yoga in New Mexico to Host to National Meditation Event

Dahn Yoga Meditation

New Mexico is called it the Land of Enchantment because of its natural beauty--from its open skies to its vast desert vistas and beautiful mountains. But it is also enchanting as a home to ancient sacred sites and as a place of wonder to which many people have come seeking spiritual sustenance. It is no surprise that Dahn Yoga has selected New Mexico as a key site to host part of its nationwide “Power of Meditation” event series on December 17, 2011.

Though yoga has become widespread in American culture, Dahn Yoga offers a unique perspective, in that it favors integration over specialization. Meditation is integrated into all aspects of practice. According to Dahn Yoga CEO, Dong Hoon Cha “the yoga most people know is only part of an important process. Yoga calms the body and mind in preparation for meditation.” Dahn Yoga teaches that through meditation, we can learn important stress-management skills. Deep breathing, relaxation and focus enable us to manage our responses to life’s circumstances. In addition, Dahn Yoga meditation helps individuals develop awareness and acceptance of their physical body, their thoughts and emotions. This, in turn helps practitioners develop better relationships with other people and with their environments.

Based on Korean tradition, Dahn Yoga meditation focuses on movement, enabling practitioners to experience the benefits of meditation more quickly. The “Power of Meditation,” a dynamic and entertaining nationwide workshop, will feature: Simple, powerful meditation techniques; live music performance; martial arts demonstration; Collaborative Meditation; and an inspirational presentation by Ilchi Lee, Dahn Yoga founder and author of The Call of Sedona. All participants will receive Dahn Yoga’s biggest giveaway ever: a free one-month Dahn Yoga Membership.

In the New Mexico, the event will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday, December 17th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, with an informational expo from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
