Jewelry Designer Profile: Judith Ripka

Judith Ripka is a Award winning designer Judith Ripka creates jewelry of understated elegance that is meant to be worn everyday, from day into evening, from black tie to blue jeans and everything in between. Taught by her mother, a European couturier, to see the beauty in all the little things around us, each piece of jewelry Judith designs is an expression of that beauty as shared through the eyes of her mother.

Taking cue from her busy life as wife, mother, grandmother and business woman, Judith designs versatile jewelry with a special twist, ancient inspired, classically informed, timeless, yet modernized to complement today's wardrobe.

Amongst her many achievements and awards, Judith won the prestigious DeBeers' Award for Diamond Design and was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Please read the full interview on National Jeweler Network

Being persistent and surrounding yourself with positive, encouraging friends and associates can catapult your business into the big time, jewelry-design powerhouse Judith Ripka told attendees of the Women's Jewelry Association's Women in the Know Conference at the Fashion Institute of Technology on Friday.

Passion for creating jewelry can also take your business a long way, she added.

"Even if it had not become my business, I would still design jewelry," Ripka said. "Persistence is one of the keys to my success. I've sketched two days a week religiously for 34 years."

Ripka told the story of her business, the Judith Ripka Companies Inc., a multimillion-dollar wholesale and retail jewelry company that now employs 150 people (90 percent of whom are women) and is opening its 13th retail store in Las Vegas this year. [...]

But when Ripka started out, she was a struggling mother of three running her business out of the living room of her house in Long Island, where she was one of the few working mothers in her neighborhood at the time.

She balanced caring for the children with sketching during all of her free moments, initially selling jewelry out of her own living room from a $12 case she bought in the Bowery section of Manhattan.

Her business got off the ground with a $1,000 loan from a dear friend who was among those who encouraged her as she began making jewelry at a manufacturing facility in 1973, Ripka said. Other friends lent her cars to get around since she didn't own a vehicle.

"Don't have anyone around you who doesn't wish you well," Ripka said. "There were countless people along the way who told me to give up, that the chances were slim. But I am telling you, the chances are not slim."

Rachel Bravman: Publicist turned Jewelry Designer

Everything Rachel Bravman touches turns to gold. Yes, most of the fashion jewelry she designs for her line Rachel Leigh is already a gold color, but her finishing touch turns the celebrity coveted baubles into editorial gold.

Bravman was working as an Yves Saint Laurent publicist when she launched her jewelry line in the fall of 2004. The line was a direct answer to demands for luxury fashion jewelry that could compliment designs featured in the best fashion editorials. What resulted was a fun yet fashion forward jewelry empire worn by all the Hollywood "It" girls.

Jewelry PR: TeNo Positions Stainless Steel as Luxurious

Stainless Steel gets the Golden Treatment
When I think of stainless steel, skyscrapers come to mind—not luxury jewelry.  The German originated jewelry company TeNo is hoping to change that notion with its luxury semi-precious line that uses the industrious metal as its main ingredient.

I literally stumbled across TeNo's boutique on a recent stroll through SoHo.  The logo on the sign conjured up a flashback to a Vogue ad I’d seen in the 798-page September issue.  Walking in, I was welcomed by friendly staff and a line of semi-precious jewlery that had a natural yet luxurious vibe.

Jewelry PR: Designer Judith Jack

Recently it seems that the bracelets and broach pictured made by Judith Jack have been dominating magazines lately. Judith Jack is the premier fashion innovator and leading name in marcasite jewelry. Judith Jack uses replica marcasite that creates an antique look to their pieces that really makes them stand out. Marcasite is a mineral mined in South America dated back to being used in Cleopatra’s time. Marcasite is brassy yellow combined with a greenish tint. It was especially fashionable in Victorian times with women decorating themselves in pins and pendants with these tiny marcasite stones and silver. This retro-antique style is becoming quite the rage and we can see why.

Jewelry Marketing Trends for Fall 2009

Kimberly McDonald is a jewelry designer based in New York who creates her pieces using natural and organic materials which are then complemented by raw and and untreated fine materials. The result is a unique and exquisite piece of jewelry. I had the opportunity to talk with Kimberly regarding her designs, as well as, gain some insight into the jewelry marketing trends for 2009.

Pierce Mattie: Where does the inspiration for your pieces come from?

Kimberly McDonald: Nature. 100%. I have always been a little bit of a 'rock geek'. I collected agates from my grandmother's driveway when I was a kid. I was always fascinated by the patterns and colors. It amazes me that as much as we try to manufacture beauty, nature still trumps whatever we can conjure up. I base every piece on how to best enhance what is natural and unique about every stone.

Pierce Mattie: You discuss on your website not harvesting new materials but using our current ones, can you explain?

Kimberly McDonald: I think that conservation begins with being conscientious. I do make every effort to use what has already been harvested or utilized. Sometimes this means that we rework antique pieces (such as the natural carved emeralds in the ring attached here). We use cameos that were carved and never set into jewelry that are from the 1870s-early 1900s (see the pendant attached here). We use recycled gold and diamonds when we can. When we use wood, we use reclaimed wood (some of it comes from guitars, ships, other wooden structures). Because Nature is the focal point of the collection, it is always with a healthy respect that I approach anything that I know will involve "taking from" the earth. I think that is the best that any of us can do and if everyone would do the same, I am pretty sure it would benefit our planet immensely.

Emily Armenta Jewelry PR Brand Profile

Inspiration is a funny thing. Designers at New York Fashion Week have been inspired by everything from Chinese zodiac (Vivienne Tam) to globe trotters (Elie Tahari). Jewelry designer Emily Armenta is no different. Her inspiration is Federico Garcia Lorca, a Spanish poet, known for his dramatic and passionate works.

Her duende collection is taken from the Spanish people’s name for Lorca. Duende is interpreted as a mystical concept with no definable definition. It can be “felt in the pulse of flamenco, in the wailings of lost lovers, and in the expression of unleashed passion.” And Emily’s jewelry line Armenta, captures this sentiment perfectly.

FRUITZ Watches PR Brand Profile

Add watches to the list of healthy causes. A natural frequency watch, FRUITZ watches by Philip Stein give your body a natural energy boost, similar to the effects of vitamins in fresh fruits. The colorful and vivid watches resemble the fresh fruits that sparked the creation of the brand.

The natural frequency is made possible due to a metal disk inserted in each watch. The disk introduces the natural Earth frequencies to the wearer causing better sleep, less stress and better concentration. It seems crazy that a watch can actually be a wellness factor. But if we can be healthier by simply telling time, hey, why not?

Alex & Chloe Men's Jewelry PR Brand Profile

More and more men are throwing their preconceived notions aside and wearing fashion jewelry. And the jewelry line Alex & Chloe is making the job easier with their edgy, street wear inspired bling. Since their start in 2004, the company has been creating original jewelry, which is guided by their minimalist and humor approach.

The line isn’t divided into men's or women’s, instead Alex & Chloe takes a more unisex approach. For the rookie, we suggest the infinity link bracelet. It’s got street cred, but doesn’t scream “I’m wearing jewelry.” The oxidized silver look will blend in, day or night, and gives your wardrobe a finishing touch. For the veteran, the crown of thorns necklace is certain to attract attention. The opal triplet cabochon stone reminds us of a combination of middle Earth and flower child; think organic meets hippie.

And Graziano isn’t afraid to use color. His latest pieces, available at Nordstrom, are oversized faux crystal bib necklaces in both pale pink and baby blue. You may remember that Pierce Mattie predicted bib necklaces as one of the big jewelry trends for 2010. We also love the layering look of the beaded necklaces. Their bright palette brings a spark of color to this spring’s fashion trends.

Dina Mackney Jewelry PR Brand Profile

For Dina Mackney, it’s all about the drama. Her jewelry line centers on dramatic flair in the form of necklaces and rings. Dina Mackney Designs uses unexpected elements, such as white coral and drusy agate. The large, oversized pendants have been seen on red carpet events like the Grammy awards and are making a scene on necks across the country.

Dina, a native of Texas, draws her inspiration from her travels around the world and natural elements. Her use of stones, like the rose quartz ring, We love the citrine pendant necklace, available at Nordstrom. The juxtaposition of the rough, jagged stone against the more delicate vermeil gold looks like the perfect piece to layer on this summer. The line is definitely for the bold and daring. But it’s going to take much more than a fashion risk to stop us from being noticed in these unique designs.

Bony Levy Jewelry PR Brand Profile

As Nordstrom’s exclusive jewelry designer, Bony Levy understands contemporary luxury. His ten year industry experience has given Bony diamond knowledge beyond karats, which he proves within his designs. Nordstrom Carriere Jewelry by Bony Levy is the exclusive Nordstrom brand, and Bony has created designs that stand out from the pack. The brand mixes elegant and casual by using diamonds in unexpected ways.

Simplicity plays a large part in Bony’s design element and that ultimately makes the line the perfect companion to practically any get-up. The Flower Stack ring, which features three layers of diamond ring bling, combines fashion-forward thinking with an everyday approach. We love how easy the ring would pair with a pair or jeans or an evening gown. The fine jewelry line is, as expected, on the expensive side, with the line starting at $400. The line also features a bridal collection, promising bling until death do us part. If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, we may have just found a possible candidate for a new BFF. Combining diamonds and fun is definitely the way to our hearts.

Luxury PR: Resort Wear Jewelry

Jane%20A.%20Gordon.jpg

As we all plan our resort vacations this upcoming season there is no doubt most of will head to St. Bart’s and others will cruise the Caribbean. One brand comes to mind to accessorize your wardrobe for the season: Jane A. Gordon. Pierce Mattie PR caught up with resort wear jewelry designer, Jane A. Gordon, who had this to share with us.

PM: Tell us a little bit more about Jane A. Gordon Jewelry.

JG: What sets my work apart from others is that, while it is designed to stand alone as jewelry, decorative and meant to enhance a woman's beauty, it is also filled with symbolism and metaphor, designed to enhance a woman's life and soul. Once you see the path, finding joy is delightfully simple.  Yet somehow it took me many years of darkness and pain to find my way.  I was blessed, after years of searching, to have had some epiphanies, which allowed me to make the quantum leap and see the patterns in all of my former quests. My inspiration, my passion, is to share what I have learned about finding joy. I try to do this in all aspects of my life and work, and have found that, for me, the best way is the most subtle, through the beauty of jewelry - one woman at a time.

PM: Who is your typical customer, what is she like?

JG: She is a leader.  She does not need her husband or friends to tell her what she likes; she knows herself and she knows the world around her.   Likewise, she is not dictated to by the fashion industry and trends.  The only fashion she cares about is her own personal style, which she has in abundance.

18K Fine Gold Jewelry Media Relations w/ Dean Harris

Self-taught Dean Harris is an artistic mastermind who discovered his jewelry talent, while on a quest to learn why people embellish their bodies with jewelry and accessories. Harris believes in the ability for us to relate to the world in a positive way though the self-expression of what we wear.

Harris designed a gorgeous collection of earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings that are predominantly made of 18K gold and silver and often combined with either Tahitian pearls, fossilized mammoth or shed horn.

A beautifully artistic piece that caught my attention was a piece of green petrified wood brilliantly attached as a pendant to a thin golden chain. The chain is attached in a way that appears as if it is woven throughout the wood and then decorated with tiny pink sapphires. Harris’ ability to take unlikely pieces and turn it into a magnificent expression of art is a remarkable talent.

Jewelry PR: Carol Dauplaise

Carol Dauplaise Jewelry has been turning out gorgeous costume jewelry pieces since 1978. The privately-owned company was founded by Dauplaise herself, after working almost 20 years under costume jewelry retailer Miriam Haskell. Her time spent at Haskell gave her the experience to branch off and create her own line of bold statement pieces.

The brand is known for lots of stone accents, embellishments, and pearls. As a costume jewelry retailer, the emphasis is on large, chunky necklaces and intricate bracelets and earrings. The jewelry can be worn as standalone pieces that will be sure to add the finishing touch onto any ensemble.

For those who like a little bling, Carol Dauplaise rings are to die for. One of my favorite pieces from her ring collection is the Hematite Flower Stretch Ring (pictured). My suggestion? Pair the ring with an uber-trendy purple nail varnish for a totally polished fall look. The price point for the collections is quite reasonable. Bracelets and rings sell for about $15, but many online retailers have past season’s rings on sale for as low as $9. Including necklaces, brooches, and earrings, all items from the current collections sell for under $50.

Carol Dauplaise’s contemporary collection is fabulous, but be sure to check out some of her vintage pieces as well. Though the vintage items are a bit more expensive, the jewelry has an antique charm that just can’t be replicated. The company’s website is currently under construction, but you can find Carol Dauplaise jewelry at other online retailers like Shopstyle, Dillard’s, and more.

Designer Jewelry PR: Christian Audigier

Christian%20Audigier%20Jewelry.jpg

PerryOlsen.com, a leading online retailer of gold and diamond jewelry, has partnered with fashion mogul Christian Audigier to offer his personally designed jewelry collection. The line is a mixture of pendants, rings, earrings and bracelets featuring rock inspired design with an urban flair. Each piece presents detailed craftsmanship highlighting the artistic quality of the Christian Audigier jewelry brand. Themes range from hearts, wings, flowers to skulls and swords.

Together, Perry Olsen and Christian Audigier focus on the latest in men's luxury jewelry design, a growing market now consisting of some 10 percent of retail jewelry sales translating to over 6 billion dollars per year. "The men's jewelry market continues to grow as the entrance of Christian Audigier bold and sophisticated design will serve to inspire more designers to follow," said Tom Diep of Perry Olsen.

Christian Audigier designer jewelry is made primarily with solid sterling silver marked with gold accents and set with cubic zircoina diamond simulated stones. Most pieces are carved with intricate patterns often displaying a merger of symbols, images or objects such as a grenade with wings or a sword pierced heart. To achieve a vintage appeal an oxidation process is used creating contrasting shadow-like darkened areas against the silvery colored surface.

Coming from the high fashion world of France, Christian Audigier has developed designs for popular modern day brands including Von Dutch, Kookai, Lee and Affliction. He has also successfully launched popular brands such as Ed Hardy, SMET, Paco Chicano, Savoir Faire and Rock Fabulous. In particular, Ed Hardy has gained iconic status in the modern day fashion environment as the brand is donned by celebrities and civilians alike. As a result, Audigier has expanded his design interests into the growing market of men's jewelry.

Niche Jewelry PR: Pippa Small

Pippa Small was one of those people who seemed to fall into her life’s calling. As a child, she faithfully collected seashells, gems, and any rock or trinket that had even the slightest glimmer of beauty. Pippa saw beauty not just in each stone’s physical appearance, but in the memories that were associated with it. A button was more than just a button; it was a charm evocative of fond feelings from the past, a representation of something much greater than itself.

Pippa was a storyteller, and her love for people and memories influenced her entire life. She designed and sold jewelry to fund her college years, and later fused her interests together while working abroad with native communities. She has since been named an ambassador for Survival International, a movement to support tribal communities. Currently Pippa Small Jewelry has four projects running in separate underprivileged countries, each collection inspired by the talents of the natives.

Pippa was initially drawn to Panama because of the intricate blouse textiles, known as Mola’s. The design of each Mola is meant to tell a story of a soul’s journey, and the women of Panama all wore beautiful charms and gold accents to accompany the Mola’s. Pippa immediately began working with the women to create golden disks with engraved patterns, each handmade piece representing a story and reflecting the beauty of the women who crafted it.

PR - Athens Hottest Jewelry Designer: Ileana Makri

Born and currently residing in Greece, Ileana Makri has created a beautifully refined staple for Athenians searching for unique, hand crafted goods. Her jewelry line, Makri is full of symbolism and stunning old-world craftsmanship.

Makri studied jewelry design at the Gemological Insititute of America in Santa Monica and in 1987, opened Mageia- her flagship store. Mageia is Greek for enchantment or magic, and is the perfect name for Makri’s imaginative jewelry. In 1996, Makri introduced her self titled signature line to her store, capturing the attention of Barneys in the U.S. She quickly gained a loyal fanbase, including celebrities Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, Lenny Kravitz, Courtney Cox and more.

The Makri line is based off of many multicultural symbols and meanings. “Symbols have a broad, universal appeal that crosses cultures,” said Makri herself. Her inspiration comes from religions and Greek mythology. She is also attracted to the “evil eye” and has an entire collection devoted to the Mediterranean symbol that provides protection against negative forces.

Jewelry PR: Lucifer Vir Honestus

Fine jewelry retailer Lucifer Vir Honestus is not named after the brand’s founders. Rather, it is an homage to the first medieval jeweler of Milan, and the couture designs reflect an ancient technique that results in unique, classically Italian creations.

Lucifer Vir Honestus was founded 12 years ago in Milan by Luna Scamuzzi with help from her husband Paolo Mandelli. Though both were traditionally trained as architects, the duo switched gears to focus on a new, more artistic venture in the form of jewelry. Scamuzzi’s architectural background was a unique prerequisite; it allows the designer to approach each piece with an exceptional passion for design, shape, and aesthetic.

Jewelry PR: Hoorsenbuhs

Ages ago, Hoorsenbuhs was the name of a 16th-century ship that traded gold and luxuries across the world. Today, fine jewelry brand Hoorsenbuhs aims to bring luxury to those who desire it as an homage to the namesake.

Designed by Robert Keith, Hoorsenbuhs' creations are easily recognizable and have an air of pure elegance. The tri-link motif is a simple yet indulgent design that the brand has made their own. The interlocking design is a metaphor for the designer’s lifestyles and the brand image: strength, quality, and opulence.

The line is completely customizable. Buyers can choose their metal, whether it be platinum, silver, or 18 karat yellow, pink, or white gold. From there, buyers can decide if they want diamonds or other detailing. The brand even flaunts a bridal collection with gorgeous wedding bands and engagement rings.

Hoorsenbuhs’ newest designs include stackable rings and bracelets. Some pieces are modifications of previous designs, but prove to be just as beautiful and well-crafted.

Jewelry PR: Irene Neuwirth Jewelry

Jewelry designer to the stars, Irene Neuwirth knows what it takes to create fashionable, sophisticated couture pieces. Founded in 2000, the Los Angeles-based company has been creating a name for itself within the fine jewelry industry for the past ten years.

Irene began designing jewelry in her twenties, and she was met with high demand for her handmade pieces. Her designs were soon bought by Barneys New York in 2000, and the company immediately rose to jewelry fame.

Irene draws inspiration from the ocean, and her fascination with nature’s vast expanse of power is reflected in her designs. Each piece is vibrant, elegant, a work of art within itself. The designs are pure, allowing the un-manufactured gemstones be the focal point of each piece.

Jewelry PR: Ashley Pittman

When Ashley Pittman initially set off for East Africa to work for an HIV/AIDS Initiative, she was unaware of just how exciting the experience would be. The sprawling landscape and rich culture that is Africa inspired Pittman to make a daring career move. The law school grad with a financial background wanted to design jewelry.

After Pittman’s work with the foundation concluded, she returned again to East Africa to recruit local artisans who could bring her concept to fruition. Her vision was to create a line of jewelry that was not only stylish, but reflected the African culture through horn, bronze, and gemstone designs.

Vintage Jewelry Design with Carolyn Cox & Gerda Flockinger

For centuries, jewelry has been a way to enhance an ensemble. It can show status, personality or both, and the significance of accessorizing has changed immensely over the past 100 years. In an attempt to showcase the constant revolution in jewelry, Caroline Cox has compiled images of the most iconic styles of each decade in her new book Vintage Jewelry Design: Classics to Collect and Wear.

Baroness Caroline Cox is a former deputy speaker for Great Britain’s House of Lords, and has been dubbed the “British Joan of Arc” by many of her counterparts. During her career as a political speaker, Cox crusaded fiercely for her passions, and it seems her love for fine jewelry is no exception.

While Cox is mostly responsible for the book, the foreword was penned by famed British artist and jeweler Gerda Flockinger. An established artist and a woman with impeccable understanding of the jewelry crafting techniques, Flockinger’s unique style has made her a pioneer of the craft, her name still having a resounding affect on many jewelry makers today. Her endorsement of Vintage Jewelry Design speaks volumes about the quality of the book.

Jewelry PR with a Greek Aesthetic: Aesa

Greek for the ‘personification of destiny’- Aesa- was founded and revolves around Greek principle. The designer behind the ethereal brand of jewelry is Randi Mates, a Brooklyn native who got her start at the Jewelry Art Institute of New York in 2006. Within the walls of the institute was where the historian became a designer, learning ancient Greek and Roman metalworking techniques.

Found strewn among downtown boutiques, the unique pieces stand out among their competitors. Often a single statement stone blended with a mix of metals, the distinct look is rugged but exudes luxury. The designer believes in the overall effect of a piece rather than playing favorites to the perceived “hierarchy of value and worth” in materials. She personally and carefully chooses each raw material by hand, determining which rough stones to use.
