Summer Jewelry Stops and Smells the Roses

It’s that time of year again. Bees are buzzing, birds are chirping, and everywhere jewelry is in full bloom.

Calgaroflower.jpg

Bouquets of glittering jewels seem to blossom before our eyes from designers like Calgaro. His colored sterling silver on elegant woven silver fabric (above) is simply stunning.

Garavelli's delicate yellow gold rose ring with diamond petals almost has a sweet aroma all its own.

And you can almost hear the beating wings of hummingbirds sipping the nectar from this spray of Dior "Diorette" gold, lacquer, diamonds, amethyst, and citrine.

After shopping for treasures like these, it’ll be hard not to have our pockets full of posies.

Gothic and Gorgeous: Stenzhorn Jewelry Toughens Image

As a designer that usually drapes its creations on delicate women in flowing evening dresses, Stenzhorn’s recent advertising campaign might come as a bit of a shock.

Stenzhorntough.jpg

Their latest collection, Dark Romance, features deathly rings and pendants that are anything but cute. Made up of white and black diamonds, this jewelry is as flashy as it is fierce.

Stenzhorn isn’t the only one adding a little punch to their pieces. Take a look at how Jennifer Miller pairs her pearls (seen here) and Rhonda Faber Green sets her black spinel (seen here).

Glam rock is definitely making its way into the jewelry box. So rock those bat wings and crosses. And if you suddenly feel the urge to wear leather pants and hop on the back of a Harley, make sure you put the skull ring over the matching gloves, see here.

Paris Hilton: A New Look For Damiani Jewelry

Despite Paris’ recent trouble with the law, when it comes to endorsing brands, she proves to still be in high demand. Damiani jewelry has just made her the face of its newest collection, Bliss, and with the E Network!’s recent decision to not pick up another season of the Simple Life, this opportunity could not have come at a better time.

paris_and_Damiani.jpg

“It’s an honor to be part of this campaign, Hilton told E! Online. “I love fashion and I love diamonds,”

The new collection, designed for a younger target, features not only diamonds but also pieces with gold, stainless steel, and wood. Its prices range from $60 to $3,000 and vice president, Silvia Damiani, feels that Paris is perfect for the jewelry’s fashionable and youthful image.

While an Italian designer, Damiani has become a favorite for American celebrities including Brad Pitt who designed his own wedding rings when he married Jennifer Aniston, and Gwyneth Paltrow who was featured in previous advertisements.

For Hilton though, her three-year commitment is just beginning. Already photographed by fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth, Hilton’s face will soon be seen in magazines, billboards, and on television after Bliss premieres in Italy.

Jewelry PR: Luxury Jewelry Buying Company Expands Operations

circa.JPG

CIRCA, an international buying house that provides a liquid market to the public for previously owned jewelry is opening an office in San Francisco and in the DC metro area. CIRCA has been seducing the world’s finest antique, estate jewelry and diamond sellers since 2001. It is only fitting that the company expands into the bay area and the nation’s capital where a taste for fine gems and jewelry prevail.

BONNIE_STERN_edited.JPGCHRIS_DEL_GATTO_edited.JPGFABIOLA_BERACASA_edited.JPG
(Bonnie Stern, Chris Del Gatto, Fabiola Beracasa)

CIRCA’s unique service has proven a successful entrée: an expert buying staff, the crème de la crème of customer-service and pricing that is unprecedented. CEO Chris Del Gatto credits CIRCA client’s intense loyalty to the company’s policy of being consumer advocates first. ‘By being honest and transparent throughout the entire process (A process which is daunted with misnomers!), this openness and honesty prevails in each transaction with CIRCA.

Del Gatto’s tenacity has carried the jewelry industry a leap forward. He notes, ‘Through professionalism, honesty, expertise and a tremendous depth of knowledge – CIRCA has set the new standard for caring consumerism. We see an incredible amount of jewelry and our depth of knowledge is truly valuable.’ Because of CIRCA, fine jewelry is now more liquid than anything in a family’s portfolio. Significant items often historically have remained frozen in the vault as ‘non-performing assets.’ At CIRCA once a client accepts an offer, they are immediately presented with a check. No commission charges or fees are deducted. It is a quick, efficient and press-free alternative to the gossipy and expensive atmosphere of the auction house.

As a senior executive that has run the jewelry department of an international auction house and having been in the jewelry business for over 18 years, I've seen that there is nothing else like CIRCA available for consumers,” states Peter Shemonsky Directof CIRCA's San Francisco office and frequent appraiser on The Antiques Roadshow. "The bay area is full of entrepreneurs, actors and socialites, which is the exact demographic that CIRCA would appeal to.”

CIRCA’s access to collections is in steady and solid growth. With offices in New York, Palm Beach, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington D.C., Las Vegas and Hong Kong; CIRCA has plans for cosmopolitan expansion to Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and Boston; and internationally to London, Paris, Brazil and beyond. CIRCA works with clients from around the world and is not exclusive to the regional office areas. You can learn more about CIRCA at www.circajewels.com.

GelinAbaci: Perfecting The Art Of Tension Jewelry

Tension Jewelry is an art form like no other. A stone seems to float effortlessly as its brilliance catches the refractions of light throughout, all the while it is the jewelry designers craft and skill that knows the perfect amount of tension to create between the metal bands holding the stone to create this illusion.

gelinabaci_edited.jpg

No one does it better than GelinAbaci. Modern jewelry design meets flawless style, GelinAbaci's Tension Collection boasts perfection in design with the appearance of fluidity of the stones. With only a handful of jewelry companies selling tension jewelry, GelinAbaci is only 1 of two companies found right here in the US; all of their jewelry is designed and crafted within the US as well.

Tension jewelry vs. prong jewelry is always a hot debate, and while the concept of tension jewelry is not new, it appears to be increasing in popularity. Have you owned tension jewelry? Do you feel its benefits outshine traditional jewelry settings?

Simon G. Jewelry: Creating A Lasting Legacy of Fine Jewelry With Passionate Jewelry Design

Old world tradition meets the pursuit of perfection with Simon G.'s exquisitely handcrafted pieces of fine jewelry. The artisanship of each design is truly breathtaking...and just the way Simon Ghanimian envisions your reaction to be, one that is physical and emotional with understanding of the passion that goes into each piece of jewelry created.

simong_jewelry.jpgsimong-jewelry.jpg

I've fallen in love with the sparkle and intricacy of the Vanity Fair ring with its intermixing of white, rose and yellow gold complimented by white and canary diamonds. Both stylish and sophisticated, it is a design that is timeless across all trends.

Pink and diamonds, my two favorite things. Simon G.' s Malibu ring with its micro pave set brilliant white diamonds, capture the essence of grace and femininity in this rose and white gold ring.

Gloriously detailed, pridefully created; Simon G.'s jewelry speaks to your heart and the legacy of jewelry passed down through the generations.

Chi Galatea Huynh: Jewelry As Art

If there is one jewelry designer who can take my breath away and leave me stunned, it's Chi Galatea Huynh. His amazing jewelry will leave you in awe of his craftsmanship, but also of his innovative thinking. Huynh gets his inspiration from nature's beauty and forges his designs with masterfully skilled hands. It is Huynh's out of the box thinking and humble spirit that are the true factors in his success.

The magnificent Mercy Pearl is Huynh's signature piece of jewelry formed from a natural black pearl carved away to reveal the nucleus--exposing a gemstone. There is nothing out there like it and it is an amazing work of art.

davinici_cut_stones.jpg

My favorite is his DaVinci Cut gemstones and diamonds. It was again Huynh's innovative thinking that brought to life a gemstone that could change colors at different angles and points of view. Pictures of the DiVinci Cut stones does not do it justice, you should see the video on Modern Jeweler's Jewelry Video Network to get a true feel for how exquisite this design is. Find it under Trunk Shows>Davinci Cut.

Chi Galatea Huynh's jewelry is available on his website, at various tradeshows and retail outlets around the country.

Jewelry PR: TeNo Positions Stainless Steel as Luxurious

Stainless Steel gets the Golden Treatment
When I think of stainless steel, skyscrapers come to mind—not luxury jewelry.  The German originated jewelry company TeNo is hoping to change that notion with its luxury semi-precious line that uses the industrious metal as its main ingredient.

I literally stumbled across TeNo's boutique on a recent stroll through SoHo.  The logo on the sign conjured up a flashback to a Vogue ad I’d seen in the 798-page September issue.  Walking in, I was welcomed by friendly staff and a line of semi-precious jewlery that had a natural yet luxurious vibe.

Fall 2008: Cocktail Rings

Give em' the ol' razzle dazzle...

One thing I am an absolute sucker for is a large cocktail ring.  I happen to be fortunate enough to inherit my grandmother's custom Cartier, but I am always looking for other finger fringe to change things up sometimes.  This season's offerings tend to be organic and gemstone-rich.

Jewelry Designers Look to the Past for Future Collections

History Repeats itself with Archival Inspired Fine Jewelry Lines

Designers in general often look to their predecessors’ work for inspiration.  This is clearly evident in a number of fine jewelry lines popping up around the world lately.

One example of this window to the past is Van Cleef and Arpels nod to a past collaboration with George Balanchine. Ballet master Balachine’s mystification by the Fifth Avenue Van Cleef and Arpels window display of rubies, diamonds and emerald was the jumping off point for collaboration between dance and precious stones in the 1960s.

Hot Jewelry Alert, Look Out For Padma Pakshimi’s New Line

Beautiful AND talented model-turned-cookbook author-turned-television host, Padma Pakshimi, is now adding ‘jewelry designer’ to her résumé.  In the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, she spilled the beads…I mean beans.

Padma told the magazine that the development of a line of Indian-inspired jewelry is currently underway right out of her Manhattan apartment with the help of one designer and one assistant. Padma joins Heidi Klum in the world of models turned jewelry designers but makes sure to note her more modest approach to Vanity Fair, “My success is [my two business partners’] success…I wasn’t a Sports Illustrated Model.  I’m sure that those girls made a *@!#load more money than I did.”

padma lakshimi

If Padma’s unique taste in her super chic digs (photographed for Harper’s Bazaar by Douglas Friedman above) are any indication for what we should expect for her jewelry line, then we are in for a very pleasant surprise.

Jewelry PR: The New Source of Diamonds - Canada

Canada is the new place for high quality diamonds. Canadian diamonds are becoming more popular and accessible on the market. How does Canada fare in this market? Compared to the conflict-ridden territories of Africa, Canada comes in at number three for the top diamond producing countries on the continent by value. Over 15 million karats of diamonds were produced from Canada in 2007. It is estimated that billions of dollars are added to the economy from the diamond production centers. Are you wearing a Canadian diamond?

DeBeers Experiencing Cutbacks Due to Poor Diamond Sales

It seems the belief is that diamonds are no longer a girl’s best friend, as the world’s leading and most valuable diamond mines run by DeBeers have been on a down slope since the start of the year. DeBeers put its Botswana production on hold due to suffering sales in light of the economic downturn.

Many fashion-savvy consumers are heading to the counters to invest in simulated diamonds, Swarovski crystals and even cubic zirconia. Hence, the mines’ total halt of diamond sales in November and “very little” sales in the succeeding months.  DeBeers anticipates the decline to continue until Christmas next year at the earliest and is planning to drastically cut production.

“We are going to significantly reduce production levels to align them with levels of demand,” Stephen Lussier, executive director for external and corporate affairs, said on the fringes of a mining conference in Cape Town according to Financial Times.  “There’s no point digging a diamond out of the ground when you don’t have a client ready to buy it.”

So does this mean that Victoria's Secret is no longer making their infamous diamond covered bras? We jest of course, as the diamond-laden bra is part of the Victoria's Secret branding.

Jewelry PR: Versace's Fine Jewelry

Versace is noted for its audacious designs in various lines including clothing, sunglasses, handbags, fragrances and even furnishings. Their handbags are deemed to be the masterpiece of the cutting edge and adored by high-profile celebrities worldwide. Handbags aside however, I feel as though no one gives enough recognition to Versace’s jewelry line.

Versace’s current jewelry collection is exquisite. If you are a diamond lover, you will love Versace’s jewelry with diamonds coated in its pieces. Their jewelry comes in a variety of different styles with 12 differently themed collections. The Medusa line has its pieces set in white and black diamonds in swirls of intricate designs (I love it!) The Atelier collection has many pieces with rose gold, which gives a more elegant and sophisticated look. Versace’s elegance rings have been really popular this season, especially since big statement rings are so in right now. The rings come in white and yellow gold set in white diamonds, with gemstones such as green amethyst and rose sapphires. The coloring of Versace’s jewelry is very unique with an array of gems in pinks and blue hues. If you love pendants, the Fendra collection has a great black pearl pendant with white gold diamonds that would look great dressing up or down.

Jewelry Marketing Trends for Fall 2009

Kimberly McDonald is a jewelry designer based in New York who creates her pieces using natural and organic materials which are then complemented by raw and and untreated fine materials. The result is a unique and exquisite piece of jewelry. I had the opportunity to talk with Kimberly regarding her designs, as well as, gain some insight into the jewelry marketing trends for 2009.

Pierce Mattie: Where does the inspiration for your pieces come from?

Kimberly McDonald: Nature. 100%. I have always been a little bit of a 'rock geek'. I collected agates from my grandmother's driveway when I was a kid. I was always fascinated by the patterns and colors. It amazes me that as much as we try to manufacture beauty, nature still trumps whatever we can conjure up. I base every piece on how to best enhance what is natural and unique about every stone.

Pierce Mattie: You discuss on your website not harvesting new materials but using our current ones, can you explain?

Kimberly McDonald: I think that conservation begins with being conscientious. I do make every effort to use what has already been harvested or utilized. Sometimes this means that we rework antique pieces (such as the natural carved emeralds in the ring attached here). We use cameos that were carved and never set into jewelry that are from the 1870s-early 1900s (see the pendant attached here). We use recycled gold and diamonds when we can. When we use wood, we use reclaimed wood (some of it comes from guitars, ships, other wooden structures). Because Nature is the focal point of the collection, it is always with a healthy respect that I approach anything that I know will involve "taking from" the earth. I think that is the best that any of us can do and if everyone would do the same, I am pretty sure it would benefit our planet immensely.

DeBeers, the World's Largest Diamond Mine, Partners with Kim Kardashian

In 2006 the diamond business in Botswana was booming. Since the discovery of diamonds in 1967, it has been nearly 40 years of constant growth in Africa. But, when sales start to decline (a whopping 68% recently), Botswana tries to keep up by “keeping up with the Kardashians.” On Kim Kardashian’s recent stint to the diamond industry in Africa through Russell Simmon’s Diamond Empowerment Fund, DeBeers hired her to promote diamonds from Botswana to the United States.

Hope Diamond Jewelry Marketing Get’s A Facelift with Harry Winston Public Relations

pierce%20mattie%20public%20relations.png

We put classic works of art in new frames why not put the world’s most renown diamond in a new setting. The world's most famous diamond, the HOPE DIAMOND, will undergo a special re-design to honor the 50th Anniversary of its donation to the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History. Given to the Institution as a "gift to the American people" by legendary American jeweler Harry Winston, the Smithsonian Institution and Smithsonian Channel(TM) will celebrate the diamond's legacy by inviting the American public to vote on a new design for the stunning 45.52-carat blue diamond.

We are half way through the voting process, log on to pick your design at: http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/site/smithsonian/hope.html  I personally like Embracing Hope the best, but you decide. The House of Harry Winston has designed three possible settings -- each symbolizing modern Hope in America. The winning setting will be revealed during a press conference in Washington, D.C. this Fall. The Hope Diamond will be put on display in its new setting at the National Museum of Natural History, and televised nationally as part of the world premiere of the Smithsonian Channel's "Mystery of the Hope Diamond" in March of 2010. The Hope Diamond will be returned to its permanent setting before the close of 2010.

Rare Blue Diamond on Exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History

Starting January 28th, the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond, which is a rare deep blue diamond weighing in at 31.06 carats, will go on display at the National Museum of Natural History. The rare gem is said to be from the same famous mine in India that the Hope Diamond was harvested from.

This gorgeous diamond that any girl could only hope for in their collection is said to have indeed had a female owner. The daughter of Philip IV of Spain was given this diamond when she became engaged to Emperor Leopold I of Austria. I guess the age old saying, “Something borrowed, something blue…” was alive and well even back in 1664.

Golden Globes: Statement Earrings with Bulgari, Ofira Schwartz and Chopard

It wasn't too difficult to notice a jewelry trend among celebrities last night at the Golden Globes as so many went sans necklace (although Julia Roberts' Van Cleef and Arpels necklace kind of made up the difference for everyone else.) However, no necklace meant giving way to larger statement earrings and they were something fierce. (My ear lobes screamed oh no, but my love of jewelry said oh yes!)

Jewelry PR Launch of Colored Diamonds

diamond%20public%20relations.jpg

Do you believe that a clear, sparkling diamond is a girl's best friend? Think again. Rarer than white diamonds are natural colored ones, each of which is unique. The place to find them is at Arthur and Natacha Langerman's just re-launched website http://www.langerman-diamonds.com.

The father/daughter team has made buying a gemstone online as easy as ordering a book. Now a customer can purchase natural colored diamonds through the user-friendly site with just a click or two. Those with questions or in need of advice are personally contacted by an expert within 24 hours.

Known as the "Color Man," Arthur Langerman is the foremost expert on natural color diamonds and possesses one of the largest collections of them in the world. He has more than 40 years of experience in the field, having started working with precious gems in a diamond-cutting workshop in Antwerp at the age of 15. His daughter Natacha, who also trained as a gemologist, spearheads the company's web strategy.

Langerman-diamonds.com is the go-to source on the subject. It features the first online encyclopedia of natural color diamonds, a blog, and now an incomparable online shop to buy the rarest of diamonds - 1200 stones in 300 hues (Olive, Mint, Gray, Burgundy, Saffron, Indigo ...) - at prices that range from $150 to $2 million.

Through their website the Langermans have found a way to make something rare attainable. Just think, only one diamond in 10,000 is natural colored. (Their hue is formed by stray atoms present at the time of formation.) Miracles of nature, natural color diamonds are as scarce as they are exceptional. As no two colors are the same, they are the ultimate luxury and thus a popular choice for wedding rings. It's possible to purchase engagement rings on the secure site - or to design your own using the "Make Your Jewel" module.

Historically, natural color diamonds have been prized above all others. Take, for example, the dark blue Hope diamond, once belonging to Louis XIV, which was donated to the Smithsonian Institution by Harry Winston Inc. The Pink Panther takes its name not from the movie's bumbling protagonist, but rather a precious rose-colored diamond. A rare real-life example of the same was sold in December 2009 in Hong Kong for a record $10.8 million.

Neither royals nor the fashionable can resist the allure of natural color diamonds. Halle Berry wore a pumpkin-colored ring to the Oscars the year she won an Academy Award for Best Actress, and Victoria Beckham was made a present of a pink diamond by her English footballer husband, David Beckham. Now that's how to color the word beautiful ....

All Langerman diamonds are conflict-free.

Jewelry PR: Mark Loren Designs Announces Exclusive, More Brilliant Diamond

Over the years, Southwest Florida gem master Mark Loren’s creations have racked up accolades and fans for their uniqueness, but now that honor is about to get a bit more “multi-faceted.” That’s because Loren is introducing his own signature Firelight diamond cut that makes his round stones sparkle more brilliantly than others.

“An ordinary, round diamond cut has 57 facets, or sides,” Loren says. “Our new Firelight diamond has 81 facets. The more facets a diamond has, the more brilliantly it sparkles.”

Loren’s design team not only creates new pieces, but also helps customers give old pieces new life by creating new settings or styles. About a year ago, they noticed that the older stones, particularly those dating before 1939 with more European-style cuts, that came into their shop were prettier and shone more brilliantly than newer diamonds. They saw an opportunity for improvement.

“We thought ‘these stones are better than 90 percent of the newer diamonds out there. There has to be a way to combine the best of their traits with new technology and create a better cut,” Loren says. From there, the idea for Firelight was born.

Loren and his team worked with an Israel-based diamond cutter for approximately a year to create a stone with just the right brilliance, creating several prototypes before finally selecting the design.

Firelight diamonds have a higher dome than traditional round-cut diamonds, and no shadows. Available exclusively at Loren’s Fort Myers studio, each Firelight diamond has the jeweler’s logo laser-etched in it for identification purposes, but invisible to the naked eye.

Loren describes his trademark-pending diamond cut as reminiscent of a European cut, but with modern brilliance. Its many facets provide more sides for entering light to reflect off of, causing it to shine “like Firelight.”

“In today’s jewelry industry, there’s a lot of sameness,” Loren says. “You have to set yourself apart. Our clients have come to expect more from us, so we felt we owed it to them to come up with a diamond not many other people will have. When it’s combined with one of our unique settings, each piece is truly an exquisite work of art.”

And this premium diamond doesn’t necessarily come with a premium price. While the cost for stones is determined mainly by their size and quality, Loren estimates a Firelight diamond will only cost five to 10 percent more than a diamond with the same size, color and clarity, but a different cut.

“By introducing the Firelight diamond, we’re providing our customers with another way to make the jewelry they design with and purchase from us as unique as they are,” Loren says. He may eventually license the cut to other jewelers, but for now, will enjoy having a unique stone available only to his clients.

Firelight diamonds will be available at Mark Loren Designs in Fort Myers, Fla. beginning Jan. 29. The studio is located at 13351 McGregor Boulevard, Fort Myers, Fla., 33919.

Engagement Ring Marketing Program

The forward-thinking entrepreneur at EternityDiamonds.com of Brooklyn, NY, has come up with a "how come nobody thought of that before" innovation in online engagement ring sales. Addressing the consumer's fear of buying a high-ticket, sight-unseen item, CEO Rendler has developed a unique program to set customers' concerns at ease.

Called "Try It Before You Buy It," the program combines the benefit of lower online prices with the security of "in-store previewing" for one of the most important purchases in a young couple's life.

Says Rendler, "Jewelry could well be one of the hardest online purchases to make. It's mostly a visual decision, and bridging the gap from photo to finger can often be too big a leap. Everyone acknowledges the fear factor in making one of the most important jewelry purchases of your life from a photo."

Bringing the Jewelry Store to You

EternityDiamonds.com has developed a novel solution to this dilemma by "bringing the store to you." The prospective buyer scouts the huge selection of traditional, contemporary and the hottest ring settings on the Eternity Diamond website and selects up to three possibilities. The company rushes amazingly authentic-looking replicas to the buyer who tries them on, lives with them for 10 days, and selects the one that fits the bill. ("Round-trip" delivery is free and the customer is under no obligation to buy.)

The company then produces the setting (yellow gold, white gold, platinum) and diamond (size, color and quality) according to the customer's specifications and voila! An Internet engagement ring with "in-store" peace of mind!

Says Rendler, "For those who live far from a quality jewelry store, need more selections to choose from, or simply want to make their purchase online, we've crossed all the hurdles to give the customer what they need."

To ensure satisfied customers, EternityDiamonds.com is willing to custom design any ring and has a 30-day return policy

Los Angeles Jeweler Sells Wholesale Diamond Wedding Rings to the Public

There is just something about the holidays that makes guys want to slip a gorgeous Diamond Engagement Ring on their girlfriend's finger. Statistics shows that the more couples get engaged in the month of March than in any other month of the year. Since now is the season to become engaged, men who are ready to propose are on the hunt for a beautiful Diamond Wedding Ring that does not break the bank. Luckily for them, one Los Angeles jeweler is offering wholesale prices on diamond wedding rings for huge savings. Without the retail jeweler's markup, men can now afford to purchase a more impressive, higher quality diamond wedding ring from King of Jewelry while staying under their budget - just in time for a the perfect proposal.

King of Jewelry has a massive selection of stylish, beautifully designed diamond wedding rings for sale. Their Diamond Wedding Rings include everything from princess cut diamond wedding rings to pave, round brilliant cut, emerald cut, heart shaped and cushion cut diamond wedding rings. Along with their stunning selection of Diamond Engagement Rings is an equally impressive roundup of diamond wedding bands. All of King of Jewelry's diamond wedding ring sets compliment each other for an aesthetically appealing jewelry statement. When a future groom buys a diamond engagement ring first and later goes to select a diamond wedding band, he will find it very difficult to find a diamond wedding ring that matches the engagement ring perfectly. If the styles match, many times the fit of the diamond wedding band is not the same as the engagement ring, or vice versa.

At their wholesale pricing, future grooms can buy both the diamond engagement ring and the diamond wedding ring at a better price than buying just the engagement ring alone. King of Jewelry's online store presents a win-win situation for everyone involved - less hassle for the groom while saving money, and an impressive, beautiful diamond wedding ring for his future fiance.

Tiffany & Co. Jewelry Growing Profits a Sign of an Economic Recovery?

Last quarter we heard many echo the sentiment that the economic downturn was finally coming to an end. While fourth quarter numbers began to come in, it appears there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. At least that is the feeling I get after hearing the increase in sales that Tiffany & Co. experienced at the tail end of 2009. When luxury brands begin to see profits again, there is usually that collective sigh of relief heard throughout the country knowing that consumers are once again opening their wallets for non-essential items. (Although whose to say anything in those little blue boxes are not essential?)

Jean Dousset Celebrity Engagement Ring Designer Launches Try Before You Buy Site

diamond%20marketing.jpg

Jean Dousset, designer of Eva Longoria-Parker and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams' engagement rings, has launched a revolutionary website on April 7th, 2010. The site, www.jeandousset.com, will allow consumers to shop for, and try on, a unique "Replica" of their handcrafted engagement ring from the comfort of their home, before they buy online.

"Since not everyone can come to my atelier in Beverly Hills, I invite the world to visit www.jeandousset.com, where I can personally walk them through the process of designing their dream engagement ring. Our clients will have the unprecedented opportunity to try their favorite design at home to appreciate the look and feel of the ring before they decide to buy it online", says Jean Dousset.

Via videos in each section, a client is lead through the 5-step design process by Dousset himself. The first step is to select a cut of diamond. All of the most popular cuts are available, ranging from the classic Round Brilliant to the romantic Cushion cut.

The second step is selecting a setting. Seven choices will be available at the time of the launch, ranging from the EVA, a micropave band with pave diamond bezel, to the NINA, a classic 4-prong setting. Based on his countless years of designing engagement rings, Dousset believes that every woman knows exactly what she wants: "I have created seven distinct engagement ring designs for every woman's taste and lifestyle. Each style is also available with any of our featured cuts of diamond, satiating any woman's desires."

The third step is to select a budget for the ring. This produces options for and leads directly to step four, the diamond and metal selection. Based on budget parameters, the client is presented with 3 GIA-certified diamonds from which to choose. Each diamond is personally examined by Dousset to ensure that its quality meets the standards of the collection. The client is then asked to select the metal for their setting, either Platinum or 18k white gold.

The fifth, and most unique, step is the Replica. Upon completing the design of their ring, a client is asked if they would like to purchase a replica of their newly-designed creation. The client will receive an exact replica of their ring in 14K white gold and high-polish, simulated diamonds delivered in 3 business days. The fee for the Replica, starting at $289, is absorbed into the total cost of the ring should the client move forward with the purchase.

For those who are in need of a 'travel ring' or if a Platinum diamond ring is not within their current means, the Replica is available for purchase to any client who builds their dream ring on the site.

For the customer whose busy life or geographic location prevents them from the luxury shopping experience they desire, www.jeandousset.com will allow unprecedented access to the high end engagement ring market. The stylish site will convey a feel of personal attention and provide a secure online environment, staples which luxury consumers have come to expect in this new age of high end e-commerce.

Jean Dousset, born in Paris in 1971, is the great-great grandson of Louis Cartier. Having spent the early part of his career working for famed Place Vendome jewelry houses, Dousset developed an eye and passion for designing fine jewelry. In 2005, Jean founded his own company, Jean Dousset Diamonds, allowing him to present his own collections and work privately with celebrities and high jewelry connoisseurs alike. Known for his timeless, sophisticated and ultra feminine aesthetic, his designs can be seen on notable actresses including Eva Longoria Parker and Amy Adams. Operations are based in Beverly Hills, California, and the site will officially launch on April 7th, 2010.

Tiffany & Co. Looks To Manufacture in Kentucky

As I mentioned in my previous post "Tiffany & Co. Jewelry Growing Profits a Sign of an Economic Recovery," the luxury jewelry brand is looking to expand its retail stores and manufacturing plants throughout 2010. Hot on the heels of the Millward Brown Optimor rankings as one of the most valuable global brands, word has it that Tiffany & Co. is looking to open a manufacturing plant in Lexington, Kentucky.

If this fine jewelry brand puts down some roots in Lexington that would mean 125 jobs and tax incentives for the area. In a time when jobs are being taken away and local governments are pinching pennies to make it onto an economic recovery, I'm sure the news about the iconic jeweler coming to town is music to the ears of the locals. My guess is that Tiffany blue will be the new color of choice for local fashion.

What are your thoughts on Tiffany & Co. creating a plant in Lexington versus jewelry capitals like New York and Rhode Island?

Design Your Engagement Ring with James Allen

The month of May makes me think of weddings, the most exciting part being the engagement ring. While you can go from store to store to see what they have to offer, I love that James Allen has a design your own ring component to his website. I have to admit, that while I am not in the market for an engagement ring, I sure had a fun time designing one!

You start by choosing a setting that best suits your style. You can pick anything from a solitaire to pave settings to Tension and more...just about 500 different settings to choose from. Once you know the setting you want, you can pick the diamond with an easy to navigate system that breaks down shape, clarity, color and carat.

Pictured is the diamond ring I designed which is 1.35 carats of baguette and pave set diamonds in 18K White Gold. There are 54 diamonds and the setting I chose was from the Meno Collection. The best part was seeing it in 3D (just scroll down to the bottom of the page!) The diamond is sold separately, but based on the center diamond being a round half carat, the total price for this ring is around $7,000. I think it is stunning!

Give it a try yourself! You can even connect the ring you design with your Facebook profile to let your friends and family weigh in the decision for the perfect ring!

Hot Jewelry Brand to Watch: MIA PEZZI

JCK's June issue spotlights some up and coming jewelry designers that you should be paying some attention to. One in particular that caught my eye was jewelry designer Julie Liu, who is the creative force behind the MIA PEZZI Couture Jewelry brand. The cultural mix of Asian and Italian influences make for some splendid and unique designs.

What I find fascinating about MIA PEZZI is that each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind, made in small batches with an eye for perfection. Liu has no formal training in jewelry design, it was merely her creativity and keen eye that has helped her craft such beautiful works of art.

Jewelry PR: The Eclipse Engagement Ring

As if the excitement for the release of Eclipse on June 30th wasn't enough, you can now own jewelry based on what Bella Swan wears in the 3rd installment of the Twilight Saga. Infinite Jewelry Company and Stephenie Meyer have collaborated to give Twilight fans a more intimate connection to the lead characters via jewelry. Best of all, you can now own Bella's engagement ring, that is not only beautiful, but comes in 3 price points to make it affordable for anyone's wallet (considering most Twilight fans are still in their teens.)

Bella's Engagement Ring, which comes in Yellow and White Gold (plating if you select "fashion"), carries 13 stones; Russian CZ's if you choose the Fashion Engagement Ring ($35), brilliant cut CZ's if you choose the Fine Engagement Ring ($479) and brilliant cut, SI1 clarity, G-H color diamonds (1.06 carats) if you choose the Genuine Engagement Ring ($1979.)

My prediction is that these will sell out quickly, especially due to the way in which the jewelry company is offering them, which I think was a very smart move. So will your love for all things Twilight drive you to purchase this ring?

YLANG23 Jewelry PR Profile

To say that Joanne Teichman has an eye for the unique, trendy and high-end is an understatement. For the past 25 years Teichman has discovered fine jewelry designers across the U.S. and Europe to incorporate into her Dallas-based jewelry store, Ylang23, with much success. Her clients count on her keen understanding of jewelry trends to deliver to them what is hip and current, as well as the pieces that will serve as timeless additions to their collections.

From Ylang23's own private label collection of diamond bangles, crosses, rings (pictured above), and gemstone strands to Atelier Marisa and many other brilliant jewelry designers (including our favorites Emily Armenta and Jude Frances), there is quite a selection at Ylang23, both in-store and online.

Another reason to love Ylang23? They are active in social media with a blog, Twitter and Facebook.

Red Carpet Jewelry from the 2010 Emmy's

Did you watch the Emmy Awards last night? The jewelry seen on the Red Carpet was amazing! Although I was surprised to see some celebrities wearing minimal, if any jewelry at all. As usual, overstated, over-the-top, statement jewelry was the jewelry trend last night and the  favorite metal had to be Platinum (and I loved every minute of it!)

By far, jewelry from Lorraine Schwartz had to be the hands down celeb favorite of the night. From Heid Klum to Sofia Vergara to Emily Blunt to Lea Michele to Jane Krakowski, so many celebrities were wearing her intricate and embellished jewelry. My favorite had to be the necklace worn by Lea Michele, who just looked amazing all together, I don't think there was a single fashion or beauty don't with her last night!

Cartier was were worn by celebrities like January Jones (did you see that dress? Yikes!) and Dianna Agron.

I was excited to hear that Naya Rivera's ring and brooch were from Le Vian. (Le Vian is my most favorite jewelry brand!) The ring was 14K set in strawberry gold and the brooch was a multi-colored Sapphire flower. The jewelry was simple and brilliant, her hair? Not so much.

Which celebrity wore your favorite jewelry of the night?
