The Launch of Alice in Wonderland Co-Branded Jewelry

Aside from change-of-plot musings, fairytale fashion is at the forefront of upcoming movie release, Alice in Wonderland. Recent reports focus on the Alice-themed jewelry but some investigative digging unearthed a whole host of super-luxe consumer tie-ins that join the fashion and entertainment world together better than an unexpected Oscar winner in an upcoming designer’s dress.  Self-professed cheerleader of the fictional leading lady,  Zac Posen, explains why the two industries marry so well, ‘There’s a real sense of escapism and imagination to it (Alice in Wonderland), that I think is important in popular culture right now and “Alice” and “Through the Looking Glass” have really become of the fashion vernacular’. I couldn’t have put it better myself Mr. Posen.

The name on most fashionista’s lips is that of eco-goddess, Stella McCartney. Her penchant for high-end style and co-branded collaborations (think Stella McCartney for Adidas, Stella McCartney for GAP Kids…) led to a Limited Edition line inspired by the whimsy fare of the film. The hallucinogenic is made real, and very chic, taking the form of a bracelet and necklace adorned with the Mad Hatter’s Hat and an assortment of playing card symbols. True to her traditional RTW items, the charms are finished in muted tones with pearls and Swarovski crystals providing a quiet elegance to offset their chunky frames. At $395 for the bracelet and $425 for the necklace, these “gems” are aimed solely at Stella’s existing followers, and die-hard movie memorabilia collectors. Crystal cutter’s Swarovski, who have teamed up with Disney prior to this venture and are currently selling an entire Snow White collection alongside a Mickey Mouse here and a Tinkerbell there, are also one of the jewelry contributors. Swarovski’s offering, aptly named “Underland”, is comprised of 17 pieces ranging from cups and saucers to the infamous Cheshire Cat, and will set you back anywhere between $80 and $150. The feel-good candidate of the collaborators is Tom Binns, the Irish designer who, according to the Vice President of Global Fashion and Home, was brought to Disney’s attention by the First Lady’s unofficial advertising. Binns’ decadent designs convey the true essence of the imaginative tale, in blood red, black and gold. In keeping with the real attraction of diffusion lines, there will be 35 pieces available between $100 and $500. And in-line with his usual audience, Tom has designed 6 bankrupt-worthy pieces from $1,000 to $20,000. Interestingly, Binns’ collection will be the only one released to coincide with the opening of Alice in Wonderland on March 5, while the others launch a month before – for those of us who prefer a pretty trinket to nostalgic viewing. Sue Wong, who apparently lives to “spread glamour”, has weaved her way into Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s (to name a few) by designing a capsule collection of delicate dresses that scream romance. Fashioned after characters in the film such as Alice and the White Rabbit, slipping into one of her creations will cost you anywhere between $329 and $609.  If you hadn’t already noticed, at Pierce Mattie we heart all things beauty. So imagine our genuine excitement when we discovered that Urban Decay and OPI are also teaming up with Tim Burton’s remake of the classic. The former’s ‘Book of Shadows’ eye palette contains 16 colors plus two pencils and a Primer Potion presented in a keepsake box with Alice-appropriate decorations encasing the mirror. Now that’s $52 well spent! The USP of OPI’s contribution, aside from the fabulous new shades, are the nail polish’s names. Thanks So Muchness! ranks high as an office fave, with Off With Her Red! coming in a close second. Available to buy now, and at $8.50 a pop – me thinks we have a co-branded Queen! Images courtesy of the following:·         Stella McCartney – stylist.com·         Tom Binns – fashionindie.com·         OPI – alllaqueredup.com·         Urban Decay – hotbeautyhealth.com
