Precious Stones: March to the Aquamarine

WPR%20aq1.jpgThe official gem or birthstone of March is the aquamarine. Star of this month, aquamarine is the gem of the sea; it holds similar hues to nature’s vast watery resources in colors ranging in tone from a very light to medium blue. Many aquamarine gemstones also have a slight natural green tint. The darker the better, aquamarines deep in the dark shades are considered more valuable than its lighter-hue counterparts.

The treasure of mermaids, folklore and popular belief say that the aquamarine was a good luck charm for sailors as well as couples having rough times at home. An aquamarine is a true gem for getting out of “rough waters.” An aquamarine makes a great anniversary gift. The Greenish-blue to blue-green gem holds its own in the line of the world’s most desirable gems. The size of the aquamarine, like most precious gems, is a huge factor in price, but a rare aquamarine can in the fact weigh hundreds of pounds. Expect to break several banks to own one of those. The most popular cuts for an aquamarine are ovals and emerald cuts. True gem connoisseurs would prefer and appreciate a large dark pure blue aquamarine. The world’s most important sources for mined and refined aquamarines are Brazil, Zambia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Angola, Madagascar and the United States.

Known since the time of the Romans and Greeks, the highly-prized gem is continuously compared to the color of the ocean or sea because of its brilliant color. Although aquamarine is not my birthstone I love it! I think it is the most beautiful gem of all!
