Fine Jewelry: Ivory and Tusk Jewelry

WPR%20Ivory%20Jewelry.jpgEvery mineral and synthetic material has been used in jewelry. What about natural materials found on animals? Antique and vintage ivory jewelry can be found at retailers like Earthly Adornments. Check out their vintage smooth carved wide bangle bracelet circa 1960-70s made with African ivory and carved in West Germany. It is difficult to find such vintage ivory in this pristine uncirculated condition.

Instead of using the tusk of Asian or African elephants, some jewelers have gone into the past and crafted jewelry from the tusk of the woolly mammoth. Glacial deposits buried their giant tusks with most of the material being found in Alaska and Siberia. Mammoth tusk is also known as fossil ivory, and is perfectly legal to import and sell because it is extinct. All of Gaelyn Bram's Mammoth Tusk jewelry is hand-carved and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Mammoth Tusk is usually a very reliable and stable material for making jewelry.WPR%20Dean%20Harris%20Tusk%20Jewelry.jpg

In a previous collection, designer Dean Harris of Target fame had used the same mammoth material for these stunning earrings pictured right. In his latest collection, Dean Harris used petrified green wood on one his pendants. The wood dates back to the time of the woolly mammoth.

What do you think of the ivory and tusk jewelry? Would you wear the jewelry knowing that it once belonged to an animal or the fossil of an animal? Share your comments below.
