NFL Fitness Tips from Jets Safety, James Ihedigbo

Numbered are the weekends of barbeques and pool parties with summer quickly coming to an end. Even though hot dogs and hamburgers will be put to bed until next summer, partying certainly doesn’t end with the warm weather. It’s called football season—and people gather to watch the games on their HD Plasmas nearly every weekend. Our football favorites have been hard at work on the off-season to make sure you get your Direct TV NFL Ticket’s worth.

I had the opportunity to sit down with James Ihedigbo, safety of the New York Jets, to talk about just what kind of work he's been doing to get ready for this season and what we as non-athletes can take from his regiment to be more physically fit. Obviously none of us are aspiring to have biceps the size of Ihedigo, but we can learn a thing or two from someone whose job it is to exercise and play a sport demanding the greatest in agility and strength. And if you are after the physique of an NFL player, good luck. His mammoth muscles are from some extremely hard work.

The super talented football player comes out of UMass and is in his second year playing in the NFL. James lives by the motto, "To whom much is given, much is expected.” He has never let natural talent stop him from working as hard as humanly possible. He was injured in training camp last summer and was out the remainder of the season so this year is big. That's where the hard work comes into play. Check out James in action in a typical off-season work out:

Now, I'm sure you won't be running to the nearest open field with a 75lb medicine ball and hoisting it over your head, backwards I might add, as James so effortlessly displayed above. So here are some tips from pro-athlete to Joe and Jane Average:

Are Cranberry Juice Drinks Healthy?

Not all sugar is bad for you. Some are naturally present in everyday foods; lactose and galactose for example, are organic to milk. However, the sugars that are present in most fruit juices and concentrates were added in a factory and are bad for you. Now, I can easily go the route of all of the potential damaging effects added sugar will do to your health, etc. (did you know that cancer cells thrive in sugar?) but, I won’t. Sugars that are added to our food simply undermines our overall well being.

The added sugar from four ounces of a generic cranberry juice cocktail (four ounces is half the suggested serving. See “Nutrition Facts” image) kept me wide awake until 3 a.m. It is however, important to note that I don’t usually consume fluids with my meals so I drank the “natural juice cocktail” afterwards. Today, I feel, well, “unfruitful” and whatever claims the front of this juice label has made (“a very low sodium food”) have been weakened by an unproductive night’s rest, a direct contributor to a person’s overall well being. How is it that a glass, half full of supposedly healthy juice can interfere with my sleep? Let’s see what’s in it:

Bone Loss a Reality for Cyclists

Cyclists are most known for their unwavering focus on heart health and pedal cadence, but researchers are finding that there is a potential risk of bone density loss when exercising on their bikes.

It’s almost like a war between cyclists and their bones, as they often experience breaks and fractures from accidents and falls, but this time, the war got personal when Andrew Coggan, a cyclist, told the LA Times that he has been recently diagnosed with low bone density.

“Sometimes athletes in their late 20s and early 30s will come in for a femur or a hip fracture, and they’ll be surprised because the fall was really not that bad,” said Dr. Max Testa to the LA Times, a sports medicine physician at the Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Salt Lake City who routinely treats elite cyclists.  “But we’ll look at the X-rays and see that there is some osteopenia [lower-than-normal bone density] there.”

So why do cyclists experience bone loss?

It seems as if all of us have too much that needs to be done. As a result, pick-me-ups, such as coffee or caffeinated sodas have become a staple to get us through our never-ending days or long nights. Over the past decade, energy drinks have quickly become the go-to drink for anyone in need of fighting off drowsiness. FRS is a fairly new energy drink that provides the boost you need to go the extra mile; figuratively AND literally.

Wellness & Lifestyle PR: Zico Water

I love going for a run every morning to start off my day energized and refreshed, so I was excited when I learned about a sports drink that will leave me feeling better than ever - pure coconut water! Who would have thought?

Zico is an all natural, anti-oxidant drink that re-hydrates faster than water and far out weighs the benefits of typical sports drinks. I know I was surprised to learn that you would need to drink 15 regular sports drinks to get as much potassium as one bottle of Zico offers, which is more than what is found in eating one banana. This helps reduce cramping during exercise and allows you to recover faster after. It is also less acidic than most drinks and has zero fat, zero cholesterol and zero added sugar. That’s a lot of healthy zeros!

Nutrition PR: Casein Protein

Got Casein? Because Casein comprises 80% of the protein in cow’s milk, it’s no surprise that scientists realized the benefits of extracting the protein for other commercial products. Micellar casein is the natural form found in milk which is ultra-filtered without chemicals, so it’s guaranteed to be good for your body. Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Casein Protein Powder is one of the leading supplement choices on the market.

Micellar casein prevents the breakdown of muscle. As a slow digesting protein, it forms a gel-like lining in the stomach, which not only allows for a slower release of amino acids, but helps the body to reach peak protein synthesis. In layman's terms, high levels of amino acids promote muscle growth, prevent muscle breakdown, and in turn cells build even more protein.

A healthy energy drink that activates your body’s own energy producing mechanisms- no negative side effects and no crashing!

Jamba's Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, "Team Up for a Healthy America," Gets Added Boost as USA Water Polo National Teams Pledge Their Support

Jamba Juice Company, a leading healthy, active lifestyle brand was joined today by two additional partners who pledged their support for Jamba's innovative awareness program, "Team Up for a Health America," which was launched last month with the goal to help raise awareness of the Nation's obesity epidemic.  USA Water Polo and the California Association for Healthy, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD) recently joined Jamba Juice and partners, WNBA and Venus Williams, in support of the "Team Up" campaign and to reinforce Team Up's important message about how pledging to make simple changes to eat more healthy and become more active can lead to an overall improved lifestyle.

The U.S. Woman's National Water Polo team recently took home a gold medal win at the FINA World League Super Final making them a formidable competitor to beat in the 2012 Olympics.  "It is great to team up with Jamba Juice to get Americans moving!  As athletes, we are active every day in and out of the pool and we know that what you put into your body is important to your overall performance," said Brenda Villa, 3-Time Olympic Medalist and Member of the USA Women's National Water Polo team. "Jamba Juice provides better-for-you menu solutions, helping to simplify the decision about what to eat.   We hope to get everyone motivated to get into a pool swimming laps -- or otherwise more active -- followed by a visit to their local Jamba Juice store, where they can find products that nourish and replenish their bodies in a more healthy way."

"Our athletes have a mission to engage both youth and adults alike in sports, like water polo, and contribute a significant amount of their time in outreach to inspire others to get fit and eat right," said Jen Rottenberg, CMO, USA Water Polo.  "Our endorsement for 'Team Up' signifies how passionately we feel about this issue. Our athletes and members are proud to lend their voice to Jamba's critical initiative to fight obesity."

CAHPERD works with schools across the state of California to promote physical education and activity and was Jamba's partner in the February 2010 Jamba Jump Day during which over 80,000 people across the state of California jumped rope simultaneously to break the Guinness Book of World Records for most people jumping or skipping rope.  "We share the mission of Jamba Juice to inspire active living and knew from the first time we saw the program, that 'Team Up' was a great way to keep kids engaged in simple activities, they can do with their families and friends," said Drisha Leggitt, Executive Director, CAHPERD.

"When we launched 'Team Up for a Healthy America' we challenged other groups to join us in the education effort to show our nation's youth how easy it is to lead healthier and more active lives," said Susan Shields, Chief Marketing Officer, Jamba Juice Company.  "The partnership of these influential and active lifestyle organizations with our Team Up campaign demonstrates the commitment they have to children and their long-term health and well-being."

Continuing through November, people across the nation looking for ways to enhance their exercise and diet routines, can log onto www.teamupandpledge.com and join a community of like-minded people who are committing to leading more healthy and active lifestyles.  Everyone who pledges can also earn the title of Ambassador of Fitness and win fun prizes.  Pledges include fun and simple activities such as shooting hoops with friends, eating fruit for a snack, or pledging to take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Next week Jamba Juice will give away another 51 NBA gift cards to lucky winners.  Based on the achievement of pledge milestones, Jamba Juice will also provide funding to support schools and communities across the nation in need of playground equipment projects that reinforce the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
