Tough economic times have forced shoppers away from high end stores and into the Salvation Army racks. The vagabond/grunge look has been a favorite for celebrities like Mary-Kate Olsen, Nicole Richie and DJ Sam Ronson for a long while. Nonetheless, designers like Ksubi have taken this look to the next level by launching high-end fashion lines that look like they came out straight out of the Goodwill.
Designer Ksubi's collection was filled with denims, blazers and t-shirts in washed down colors and oversized fabric. The runway, completely made out of cardboard box emphasized this unique style of how the rundown look can be high-end. However, this look has continued past the warmer seasons into fall and winter.
Other designers are following on the trend: Current/Elliot Boyfriend Trash Wash Jean $229 and Slashed Meadham Kirchhoff Tina Jean at $715 are among the many designs that resemble this trend and definitely proves that you've got to pay a lot to look like your purse strings are strapped. Of course, the local Salvation Army around your neighborhood might have a lot of these designs at a fraction of the cost.
But is this look really inspired by the less fortunate or is a variation of the hipster look like in the 1960’s when the headband resembled a sort of rebellious attitude. The punk/grudge look is a modernized way of resembling a very active and conscious youth, but whether it is dressing up to make a political statement or perhaps a trend that derived from the recession (or Pearl Jam and Nirvana reincarnation) it appears grunge is coming back into play.
