H&M, Topshop Fashion: The Return of the Fedora

The Fedora hat has made its official comeback. The hat which became popular by gangsters [i.e Johnny Depp in Pubic Enemies] and detectives [hmm …Inspector Gadget?] in the 1940’s, reappeared in 2009 with a slightly modern look. A plain, tailored hat is now being deprived of any feathers or decorations attached to it, which gives it an edgy look. According to Bill Cunningham “On the Street” piece of the New York Times, this reflects what the mainstream of fashion is “a pin down tailored look with no nonsense or decorations.” This reflects an ideology that has been around for ages, less is more. Simplicity and elegance are key elements of fashion, one that a fedora, with its clean tailored look can ultimately deliver. Cunningham writes that “the straw fedora, with its rakish snap brim, is the summer status symbol." And I couldn’t agree more.

During this year’s historic presidential inauguration, former Vice President Dick Cheney, Senator Ted Kennedy and Reverend Jesse Jackson sported fedoras. Actors and musicians like Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am and KidRock were also seen wearing fedoras during the inauguration. Whether this is purely a revival of the classical accessory or simply a way of remembering politicians like John F. Kennedy and musicians like Michael Jackson, both huge fans of the fedora, the hat is back in style and taking the streets of New York by storm.

During a recent trip to Coney Island, I couldn’t help to notice the sea of hats as the crowd gathered for this year’s Sirens Music Festival. The fedora paired with a Ray-Ban Wayfarer dominated the boardwalk which became a sort of runway, displaying the must have accessory of the summer season; the fedora.

Various styles of fedoras are available at H&M, Topshop and push cart vendors around New York City. What's your take on the fedora trend?

William:

Justin timberlake helped bring the Fedora back in syle. It started to get really popular this year. I got mine a months ago which my friend also like to borrow!

What can I say- history comes back (especially in fashion).
