Fashion Couture Hits the Big Screen: Valentino: The Last Emperor

One of the most significant business icons in the history of fashion has made his first onscreen debut in New York City last week. Valentino, best known for his magical couture dresses and lavish styles, confront the final two years of his career at the top of most glamorous and competitive industry. Valentino: The Last Emperor, directed by Matt Tyrnauer, is a full-length movie that takes you inside the singular world of the life of one of Italy's most famous designers. This documentary was shot between June 2005 and July 2007 with over 250 hours of footage captured. The film goes behind the scenes of haute couture, glimpses of his personal life, including recollections of how he got started, images of him with his dogs, and interviews with people such as his business (and life) partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

The film grossed some of the highest numbers in New York’s Film Forum history. The movie grossed $30,034 from two screens in New York and Chicago. The success of this film in the U.S was already anticipated to be successful since it won best documentary at the Venice film festival and overwhelming good reviews internationally.

There is a variety of cute humor throughout the film, especially focusing on Valentino’s six pugs- Milton, Monty, Maude, Margot, Maggie and Molly, all of which are extremely adorable! Throughout the film you see his pugs receiving lush treatments such as being sprayed with cologne, even having their teeth brushed, peeing during a photo shoot (!), and even decked out with diamanté chandelier earrings!

In the movie Valentino claims "I don't care about the collection. My dogs are much more important.” What seems to matter most to Valentino however, is his partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti. This movie is not just about money or expensive clothes, but the heart of the film displays true love and their unique relationship.

The movie includes glimpses of other fashion powerhouses as Giorgio Armani, Giancarlo Giammetti, Donatella Versace, and Dian von Furstenberg. It’s definitely a must see for fashion lovers everywhere. It is now showing at the Film Forum in New York City, Landmark Century in Chicago, Embarcadero Center in San Francisco and Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angeles. Have you seen it?
