Spring 2009 Fashion Trend: Shoulder Pads Make a Comeback

For a winter season so clouded with soft, billowy dresses and economic discourse, it was surprising when designer’s reintroduced an old favorite from the times of excess in their Spring collections: the 1980’s shoulder pads. Designers such as Givenchy and Louis Vuitton, reached to, literal, new heights by dressing their models in structured jackets and dresses reminiscent of Melanie Griffith’s iconic Working Girl.

Marc Jacobs’ Louis Vuitton collection showcased strong, architectural shoulders with silky, billowing printed pants and skirts. His bright colors and over-the-top accessories made it hard to imagine this trend translating to the street. His models strutted down the catwalk with chunky earrings and tightly cinched belts, contrasting his bright spring palate of deep reds and yellows. Givenchy’s sharp shoulders were paired with more subtle hues, making the flashback trend more accessible to fashionista’s this spring. Shown in black and nude tones, Givenchy’s take on the shoulder pad toned down the football player inspired look, creating a more feminine feel.

Philip Lim and Calvin Klein searched for a more subtle approach to the shoulder pad trend, adding a touch of shoulder to structured jackets and sharp cornered blouses paired with vests and ethereal fabrics. While these designers reached a subtlety in the trend, Ennio Capasa’s Costume National collection was a near science-fiction fantasy for shoulder pad lovers; shown in shiny silvers and blacks, his collection found a balance between the spacey and feminine. He introduced new takes on the trend, such as slightly rouching the shoulder caps, he created a collection that truly is ready to wear.

The trend may seem dated, and almost laughable, to those not willing to make a statement, but as Scott Schuman recently photographed, the trend can be taken to the street almost seamlessly. Clad in a chunky scarf and smart jacket that’s fit for Tom Brady, this woman takes the trend from runway to real life in a chic, body flattering way.

What do you think? Are you willing to put shoulder pads back into your wardrobe?
