London Fashion Week: Christopher Kane

New York Fashion Week awed us this year with trends such as metallic’s and shine on asymmetry dresses and neutral color schemes with splashes of bright colors. This week from across the pond, London Fashion Week did not differ much. This year marks the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week, with designers such as Christopher Kane, whose runway show has been the anticipation of fashionistas everywhere. Christopher Kane has impressed fashion critics everywhere over the past couple years as a new designer and his following continues to grow.

Overall, Christopher Kane has a very unique collection. Its color palette consisted mainly of black on crème then slowly widened into an array of metallic’s and colors of shimmering dark greens, silver, purple and yellow. His pieces had hints of the sixties vibe and geometric lines were sown in every which way, creating a flowing ripple effect to the dresses.

“Bar codes, where I wanted to get the graphic lines of my sketches into the clothes,” was the designer's cryptic explanation of his fall 2009 collection, where black lines ran vertically, horizontally and brokenly over see-through tulle and silk looks.

I enjoyed the “bar code” type dresses personally; it really caught my eye and added a unique flair to the neutral color dresses. The symmetry in some of his dresses is incredible with horizontal lines and vertical ripples combined together. The layering and construction of his semi- transparent dresses were impressive and had a very airy feel giving off a very London-chic vibe. A few critics loved the oversized cardigans and sweaters paired with a ruffle skirt and loafers, but I feel as though I would disagree. The only other complaint would be the hair (looked like they rolled out of bed) and some of the shoes (loafers with dresses?) His skirts were straight falling above the knee with black velvet rimmed along the hemline.

His show was staged in the high-ceiling, underground show space of Top Shop for whom Kane is a contributing designer to. It’s interesting that only seven months out of Central Saint Martin’s fashion college and already Kane is being compared to designers such as Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.

This designer’s creations are known to cater to all age groups and exude a sense of power and individuality sought by every woman. All in all, it was a definite tone down from his last couple of classic shows, but still impressive to keep critics and fans happy. What do you think about this London fashion icon and his collection for Fall?
