Over the past few months, fashion has played a much larger role in the election than anyone could have ever imagined. Whether we are talking about excessive spending on wardrobes or how amazing a J.Crew cardigan looks, it almost seems that clothing choices were just as important as tax cuts and education reform. It was only minutes after the election results were announced before the hottest designers would start clambering for the coveted job of designing Michelle Obama’s inauguration dress. Women’s Wear Daily recently did a cover article showcasing some of the designs – I have to agree with most of their choices, my favorites being (surprisingly):
1. Michael Kors
2. Diane von Furstenberg
3. Isaac Mizrahi
I usually love Karl Lagerfeld or Oscar De La Renta but in this case, I’m going with my Project Runway man Michael Kors. His design seems like something Michelle would pick out for herself and would wear with grace and confidence.
All that said, January 20, 2009 will be an enormously historic night – hopefully the focus will shift off of the fashions and onto the true meaning of the inauguration!
