New York's Best Catering & Hospitality Company: Dish Foods NYC

There is a fine line between event planners and public relations professionals. Some elect to do both. At Pierce Mattie we are confident with our role in this industry as we connect our clients with the press and garner a high level of media coverage for them in return. Often our teams outsource the area of expertise of event planning, catering and ambiance creation to the pros. With that said, we have on hand the best rolodex of chefs, nutritionists, florists, dj’s and so forth. This holiday is no exception! Dish Foods NYC has earned quite the buzz this year with lavish yummy treats for its attendees. Whether you are a publicist planning a media event or a company hosting a corporate party Dish Foods NYC is the one stop shop to all entertaining details.

We caught up with Dish Foods NYC founder Ryan Corvaia for a Q&A on what you can expect to see this festive season.  

Tell us a little bit about Dish Foods NYC, what services do you provide? What makes you different from your competition? 

Dish is a full service, off-premise catering and hospitality company based in Brooklyn. We bring the food, bar, staff and party rentals to our client’s locations all over the city-whether it's a private home or special event venue.  From designing the perfect menu to seamless execution on the day of the event, Dish is committed to pairing great food with exceptional service. As the owner of Dish, I am personally involved from start to finish, whether it is lunch for ten or a wedding for two hundred.  I'm crazy passionate about good food, impeccable service and making sure every guest enjoys themselves at an event.  

What can one expect to see this season at one of your Dish NYC corporate holiday functions? 

Lots of elegant yet economical passed hors d'oeuvres such as tiny grilled cheese with fontina and sage and mini cassoulet cups with duck confit.  We are also doing comfort food themed stations such as Dim Sum Dumpling Bars and a Burger Shack Bars with mini burgers, franks, milk shakes and French fry cones.  Our signature cocktails including white cranberry margaritas and pomegranate bellini’s will also be making appearances at several holiday parties. 

What foods, wines and munchies are always the safest to serve when a host is uncertain about the taste buds of those attending? 

For food, I think it's important to give guests plenty of options at an event—not too much of one kind of food.  An hors d'oeuvres menu should have 50% vegetarian and 50% non-veg. Kicked up comfort food like our Fresh Ricotta Crostini with Honey & Lemon and Shrimp Summer Rolls with Arugula are always crowd pleasers.  Also, stay away from very specific foods like foie gras, oysters or stinky blue cheese. For wine, keep it simple and tasty with an easy to drink red such as a French or California Syrah/Grenache blend and a white such as a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. 

What is your opinion on Gourmet Magazine closing this year while Food Network Magazine from Hearst was recently cast as the most notable launch according to Folio? Is the gourmet lifestyle over?   

I blame Rachel Ray for the death of Gourmet.  No seriously, when Conde Nast made the announcement, I was shocked and felt like I lost a good friend. As a monthly resource for ideas, inspiration and recipes, the magazine was as important in my culinary life as it was worldwide.  I disagree with some critics saying that Gourmet was out of touch with real cooking or just plain snobbish. It intelligently covered everything from street food to haute cuisine with the best ingredients, proper cooking methods and beautiful photographs.   

I think there is certainly a place for the popularity of the “thirty-minute-meal magazine”, but the classic Gourmet lifestyle will never die.  It lives on in cookbooks, the internet and on our bookshelves.

Pierce Mattie PR Touches on Philanthropic Work During the Holiday w/ Ronald McDonald House & The Company Store

Has the rough economy left you feeling like Scrooge?  I felt the same way until this past week when I visited the Ronald McDonald House of New York for their “Share a Night” event.  This is a night when they ask members of the community to come forward and help share the cost of housing for their residents.  The space was decked out with what looked to be a million strands of lights, as a pianist played some of my favorite holiday melodies. For our part, we were on hand giving out presents to the young residents – many of which are far away from home – who reside at the house with their families while undergoing treatments for pediatric cancer. 

We gave out hundreds of colorful towels and bath mitts featuring playful characters, in addition to soft and cozy fleece blankets to help keep the children warm. We had a chance to speak with Bill Sullivan, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House, regarding our donation, and he stated that “Many patients undergoing cancer treatment experience flu-like symptoms including fever, muscle and joint aches, and chills, so it is important that we provide every patient staying with us the same secure and warm environment that they would have at home.”

Wishing You A Very Merry Christmas!

At our holiday lunch I asked a few of our team members what they were most thankful for this holiday season. Here were some of their responses…

Joshua (heads up or new biz): I’m grateful for today, because today is another opportunity to get it right and make a positive change.

Kristina (PR exec. turned recent bride): I am thankful for the safe traveling to and from my wedding!  Also, for all my friends and family who sacrificed something in order to be there.

 

Serge (our president): I am grateful for the people that I work with who, despite the challenges faced during the past year have banded together, as have so many businesses, to ensure our continued success.

Jenelle (Sr PR exec.): I’m originally from London, and I am grateful that I am living out my dream of working in New York City, every day.


Lance (Sr. PR Exec.): I’m probably most thankful that my partner and I were able to weather the financial storm earlier this year and are finally starting to catch up with everything. 

Sonya (our EVP): I am thankful for my family, our wonderful team and our clients who have made this year such a joy to be a part of.

Roman (heads up accounting): I am happy to share this holiday with my new six month old baby son!

Rashidah (Sr. PR Exec.) I am happy to have such a great family and am really looking forward to a wonderful 2010!

Shannon (Corporate Communications Director) I'm thankful for all of the trials and tribulations I faced this year because it made me realize my strength and creativity.

And me, well I am thankful for several things, for my health, for my family, my husband , my team – and the fact that my American Express is paid off (not kidding!), oh yes!

Skin Cancer Foundation: Meet, Mingle & Get Involved Event

This week a few colleagues and I from Pierce Mattie attended a mini cocktail party hosted by The Skin Cancer Foundation at the William Beaver House in downtown New York City. The Foundation invited friends to the Penthouse Party Room for an evening of hors d'œuvres, cocktails and conversations while engaging new and interesting professionals. It was the perfect opportunity to meet those who raise awareness for the Foundation and its worthwhile cause—preventing and treating skin cancer. We had the privilege to hobnob with influential people such as well-known cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Deborah Sarnoff and, Anne Akers, publisher of GLOW Magazine and advisory board member of the Foundation.

 

The event was organized to help the Foundation to brainstorm and plan for their inaugural “The Night the Stars Shine On” Fundraiser at the Boathouse in Central Park, which will be held on June 29, 2010. Amid the glasses of wine and breathtaking views of downtown NYC and Brooklyn, guests were asked to help in any way they can. Colorful clipboards scattered around the room invited guests to sign up for various activities to help the Foundation garner potential donation opportunities, including grand prizes for a Poker Night and to be part of their party planning committee.

 

The festivities were kicked off with Dr. Perri Robins, founder and president of The Skin Cancer Foundation, thanking everyone and expressing his appreciation for over 30 years of support to the Foundation.  Dr. Robbins then introduced his recently betrothed daughter, Elizabeth Sanchez, who has taken on a more visible role at the foundation. Elizabeth was just as appreciative as her father and went on to introduce other members of the board including Dr. Sarnoff. Dr. Sarnoff touched everyone with stories of recent patients of hers who have been diagnosed with skin cancer and how when caught early enough, she helped save a life earlier in the day.

Philanthropic PR: Mother of Five; Brenda Novak Raises Over 1 Million Dollars for The Diabetes Research Institute

As if being a mother of five and a New York Times bestselling author weren’t enough (upcoming titles include WHITE HEAT, BODY HEAT and KILLER HEAT), award-winning novelist Brenda Novak is also a true philanthropist. Wrapping up its 6th year, Novak’s Online Auction for Diabetes Research, benefitting the cure-focused work of the Miami-based Diabetes Research Institute (DiabetesResearch.org), surpassed the $1 million mark. Held each May at BrendaNovak.com, the month-long online auction features personal meetings, lunches and dinners with celebrity authors, world-class getaways and state-of-the-art gizmos and gadgets.  For Novak, it’s a labor of love and a concentrated effort to find a cure for her son who has lived with diabetes for most of his life. “I remember when this all started how excited we were when we raised $34,000. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought we’d come so far so fast,” says Novak.

2010 CFDA Fashion Awards Presented In New York

Last night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) paid tribute to the winners and honorees of the 2010 CFDA Fashion Awards at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. The top honors went to Marc Jacobs for Womenswear Designer of the Year, presented by Jessica Biel. The award for Menswear Designer of the Year was presented by Anthony Mackie to Marcus Wainwright & David Neville for Rag & Bone. Alexis Bittar took home the Accessory Designer of the Year Award, presented by Dakota Fanning. For the ninth year in a row, the evening was generously underwritten by Swarovski.

Red Carpet Jewelry PR & Marketing Trends

The jewelry seen on the Red Carpet this past week was amazing! Although I was surprised to see some celebrities wearing minimal, if any jewelry at all. As usual, overstated, over-the-top, statement jewelry was the jewelry trend last night and the  favorite metal had to be Platinum (and I loved every minute of it!)

By far, jewelry from Lorraine Schwartz had to be the hands down celeb favorite of the night. From Heid Klum to Sofia Vergara to Emily Blunt to Lea Michele to Jane Krakowski, so many celebrities were wearing her intricate and embellished jewelry. My favorite had to be the necklace worn by Lea Michele, who just looked amazing all together, I don't think there was a single fashion or beauty don't with her last night!

Cartier was were worn by celebrities like January Jones (did you see that dress? Yikes!) and Dianna Agron. 

I was excited to hear that Naya Rivera's ring and brooch were from Le Vian. (Le Vian is my most favorite jewelry brand!) The ring was 14K set in strawberry gold and the brooch was a multi-colored Sapphire flower. The jewelry was simple and brilliant, her hair? Not so much.

Footwear Market Week w/ Pierce Mattie Public Relations

From October 7 to 14, Pierce Mattie PR's Media Oasis bustled with activity as the fashion team previewed Sebago's Spring/Summer 2011 collection for over 30 fashion editors.  Guests for the by-appointment-only event perused more than 40 styles from the new collection, including an assortment of moccasins, boots, wingtips, and their famous Docksides in a wide range of materials and colors for the spring season. 

Members of the fashion team gave editors a full tour of the collection and even picked out their favorite styles for impromptu photo shoots in the media oasis.   Among the most popular styles at the event were the suede-and-patent ladies’ Bala moccasin, the canvas Lighthouse boot, and the two and three-color Spinnaker Docksides.  The pistachio shade of the men’s Docksides was a notable hit, and we’re forecasting light green as a big color trend for next spring.  Publications represented at the event included GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Marie Claire, Real Simple, Esquire, Interview, Maxim, Footwear News, Redbook, Nylon and more.  Guests left with copies of the collection’s look book and a roomy, sturdy navy-and-cream canvas Sebago tote.   

Sebago, a footwear brand with more than 60 years of heritage and tradition, will their Spring/Summer 2011 collection will be available by January 2011.  Best known for their signature Docksides boat shoes and classic New England look, today’s Sebago collections span sport, casual, and dress styles for men, women, and kids.   Sebago shoes can be found in New York City at retailer David Z or online at Sebago.com.

Celebrity makeup artist and Chella spokesperson DeeDee Marcelli , who’s performed her magic on the likes of Naomi Campbell, Angie Everhart, Emma Roberts,  Alicia Keys, and Paris Hilton, kicked off the event at Nobu 57, one of New York City’s top restaurants known for their Japanese fusion cuisine and celebrity sightings.

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Partners with Damiani & Waterford Crystal Tonight on CBS

THE VICTORIA'S SECRET FASHION SHOW returns to the CBS Television Network tonight at 10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT. Will you be watching? The world-famous Victoria's Secret Angels, including Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Candice Swanepoel, Chanel Iman, Karolina Kurkova, Selita Ebanks, Erin Heatherton and Lily Aldridge, will star in this lingerie runway show, which will also include musical performances by Katy Perry and Akon, red carpet interviews, model profiles and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. This year, Victoria's Secret has teamed up with some of the top companies in their industry for the making of the world's most celebrated fashion show.

Damiani has created the $2 Million Bombshell Fantasy Bra which features a remarkable 60 carats of diamonds and 82 carats of sapphires and topazes. The bra will be worn by Adriana Lima and is made exclusively for Victoria's Secret. Damiani is the official jeweler of the 2010 VICTORIA'S SECRET FASHION SHOW.

Waterford Crystal helped illuminate the set by partnering with Victoria's Secret to create a custom-made chandelier installation featuring more than 15,000 Waterford Crystals worth $1,000,000. The VIP section was also radiating with 64 exclusive limited edition Waterford Crystal Belline Lamps.

Lifestyle PR: Tripadvisors Rings in 2011 w/ America's Top 10 Events

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, recently announced America’s top ten quirky New Year’s Eve celebrations, according to TripAdvisor editors. From cheese-happy Plymouth, Wisconsin, to pickle passionate Mount Olive, North Carolina, these events offer travelers remarkably unique ways to usher in the New Year.

1. Pickle Party – Mount Olive, North Carolina
To ring in 2011, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company will present the 12th annual pickle drop – a fun-filled and free event which entails the lowering of a glowing, three-foot long pickle from the company’s flagpole. The pickle proceedings are at 7 p.m., or midnight Greenwich Mean Time, so event organizers recommend arriving early. Visitors awaiting the pickle drop can pre-party by partaking in pickle tasting and the event’s famous “Pickle Polka.”

2. Three’s a Charm – Key West, Florida
Florida’s southernmost point overflows with New Year’s Eve entertainment, offering three distinct—and eccentric— events. Travelers can celebrate the 18th annual conch shell drop at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, watch as a “pirate wench” is dropped from the top mast of a historic ship at Schooner Wharf Bar, or head to The Bourbon Street Pub where the drag queen, “Sushi” is lowered in an oversized, red high-heeled shoe to ring in the start of 2011.

3. Hanging with the Peeps – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Beginning at noon, visitors can enjoy almost six hours of festive fun at the Peeps Fest, the sweetest New Year’s celebration around. Families gather to celebrate the delicious marshmallow treats while taking part in Peeps-themed arts and crafts, live music and sampling the sugary treats. The event culminates with the drop of a 45-pound, four and a half foot-high Peeps Chick at 5:45 p.m. Tickets are $6 for ages 13 and older, $4 for ages 2-12.

Perfect Wedding Guide Announces Wedding Color Trends for 2011

The statement “I’m not sure where to begin” is often the first thing brides say when it comes to wedding planning. National wedding planning expert Susan Southerland suggests starting with a basic vision for the big day—a vision complete with color. Here, Susan shares her picks and highlights from PANTONE’s Fashion Color Report for Spring 2011 for current wedding color trends, and how to use the color forecast to conjure a vision for your wedding.

Most brides fall into one of two categories when it comes to her wedding vision—a ‘Classic Romantic’ or a ‘Contemporary Whimsical,' suggests Southerland. “Classic Romantics tend to select elegant venues, make timeless fashion choices, and seek to plan a magical and memorable event akin to a fairytale. Contemporary Whimsical brides are fashion forward, open to modern yet sophisticated elements, unexpected touches, and opt for more of a talked-about, P-A-R-T-Y atmosphere for their weddings,” she adds. The good news for both categories is that 2011 color trends have options that will appeal to all.

The Annenberg Space for Photography Presents BEAUTY CULTURE Featuring Hundreds of Images From Top Photographers in Fashion, Beauty and Pop Culture Opening May 21, 2011

The Annenberg Space for Photography is pleased to announce its next exhibit — BEAUTY CULTURE, a photographic exploration of how feminine beauty is defined, challenged and revered in modern society.

Featuring works from iconic photographers such as Albert Watson, Bert Stern, Herb Ritts, Man Ray, Jean-Paul Goude, Guy Bourdin, Horst, Melvin Sokolsky, Matthew Rolston, Philippe Halsman, Lauren Greenfield and Tyen, BEAUTY CULTURE encourages a social dialogue about the allure and mystique of the pursuit of female beauty, as well as the cult-like glorification and multi-billion dollar industries that surround it.

Daring, provocative and at times controversial, the exhibition presents diverse viewpoints on beauty as it has evolved through the 20th and 21st centuries.   The exhibition compellingly illustrates the power of the still image in shaping cultural ideals and expectations of feminine beauty – and photography's undeniable influence on conceptions of the Self.

"As much as beauty can astonish and inspire, it can also corrupt and subvert, rendering all else - and even itself - broken and obsolete.  The great contemporary photographers do so much more than chronicle and celebrate what is beautiful in our time.  They dig beneath it, they confront our compulsion with it, and they turn art's mirror on ourselves as well.  I can't think of a more important conversation for the Annenberg Space to have," says Wallis Annenberg, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation.

Wellness PR: Summer Solistice Yoga in Times Square

Last Tuesday, thousands of yogis joined together in Times Square for a celebration of Summer Solstice. Set on the longest day of the year, the daylong event marked the start of the new season. Hundreds stood side-by-side saluting the sun among the bustling activities of Times Square.

Registration was free for the event and enthusiasts from around the world jumped at the offer. For those who weren’t able to attend the session, they could easily tap into the event organizers website for a live streaming feed of the action.

‘Summer solstice’ is derived from the Latin meaning for the sun stands still. Tim Tompkins of the Times Square Alliance was quoted, "We're trying to create a little ocean or perhaps just a little lake or just a drop of serenity in the midst of all this madness. It's an attempt, on the longest day of the year, when the sun is shining brightest, to tap into that energy and have it help carry us through the rest of the year." The yoga class was titled ‘Mind Over Madness,’ an appropriate name for such a tranquil activity in what has been historically known as ‘the crossroads of the world.’ Free yoga mats were distributed to participants, courtesy of women’s sportswear company, Lucy Activewear.

By bringing seminal artistic figures together with younger and emerging artists, the exhibition explores artistic influence across generations and sheds light on issues of racial, sexual and historical identity. Often provocative and challenging, 30 Americans at the Corcoran explores ideas central to the American experience.

Dr. Oz is Making Online "House Calls"

The Emmy Award-winning, critically acclaimed and nationally syndicated "The Dr. Oz Show" announced the world wide release of "House Calls," (www.DoctorOz.com/HouseCalls) an innovative online experience that allows users to send personalized videos to friends and family from Dr. Oz himself!

Users can select from a list of common health and wellness topics, messages of encouragement or well wishes. From the common cold, to weight loss support and even birthdays, Dr. Oz's personalized video message will be sent to the recipient's email or Facebook inbox. Users can also select from more than 1,000 names and over 25 topics to customize each video, which Dr. Oz delivers in a seamless fashion, for each recipient. Users are then given a checklist, unique to their topic, from Dr. Oz as a handy takeaway.

Additionally, television affiliates that carry "The Dr. Oz Show" will be able to embed the "House Calls" experience into their station's website to offer to local viewers.

"The connection between people is one of the most important things to maintain for our health – I often tell people to set aside time to call friends and loved ones as part of their overall well being," said Dr. Oz.  "Now, not only can you send them a nice note, but each 'House Call' contains some useful tips presented in a fun and engaging way."
