Two summers ago when ten of us piled into the movie theatre one Saturday afternoon to watch Sex in the City – The Movie, we were beyond thrilled. A TV show being made into a movie, was a first. Usually it’s the other way around. But we were oh so pleasantly surprised as it was quite good.
When we heard part II was coming – we had full confidence it was going to be just as delicious. Though it was on our Pierce Mattie Summer Hot List I am now having second thoughts. Is it just me or are you a little nervous for the reception of Sex & the City Part II? I keep seeing footage being leaked out online. I have two very good reasons to be.
One – the entire cast is back, we have all four girls and Carrie’s two men but one character seems to have been not cast in Sex in The City Part II and this is a first. Any guess on whom that may be? No, try again. OK I will tell you. NEW YORK CITY. Where is Manhattan in this movie? The Big Apple is in itself its own character, not just a background for the four ladies to run around in. How will this movie score without our beloved metropolis?
Two – it takes place in Abu Dhabi. I think it’s great to show the Middle East in a positive way, I really do but the luxuriousness of shopping in the United Arab Emirates seems a little inappropriate right now, no? Our unemployment rate is still at 10%. Sex in the City has always been part fantasy, the clothes, the sex it’s all an escape from our day to day. But seriously?
Has Sex & the City forgotten that a very large demographic of their viewership is gay men and sexually liberated women? Sexual relations outside of a traditional, heterosexual marriage are a crime and punishments range from jail time, fines, deportation to the death penalty. So even if you are straight, I don’t think Samantha can go whore it up like she usually does, do you?
In 2005, twenty-six men were arrested at an Abu Dhabi hotel, after police discovered the men engaging in homosexual practices. In discussing the raid, Mohammed bin Nukhaira Al Dhahiri, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Auqaf stated, “There will be no room for homosexual and queer acts in the UAE. Our society does not accept queer behavior, either in word or in action.” Initial reports suggested that some of these men were ordered to be given experimental hormone treatments, although the government subsequently backed off from these statements. The men were all given a five year prison sentence. I may sound like a jaded queen here, but until we have human rights in that country, why would you want to go? Because it's opulent, exotic and forbidden? Go to Vegas for crying out loud!
Does this movie represent hypocrisy? It's OK to have gay friends, go to their weddings, but let's vacation in a country that kills them? No thank you!
So... Sara Jessica Parker’s reasons for shooting a movie in this place that doesn’t allow gay men and modern women is because…. (beats me). Rumors flew around last year that they would not even let the cast in the country and that most of the scenes had to be shot in Morocco. Maybe I am being prejudgemental. Sure there is a gay wedding, walks in front of Bergdorf’s and a night out on the town, but bringing your ex back into the mix for a scene in the Middle East, not sure how that will score with viewers.
My fingers are crossed that it’s going to be good and the storyline works! Make it work – please. I think several of us wanted to see Carrie go from tying the knot to having a baby, not having second thoughts about her marriage. Though the vibe in city is pro-divorce with divorce parties popping up all over the place. I just think it's high time for Carrie to grow up a little.
From a PR standpoint I think I would feel better if I knew proceeds of ticket sales were going to human rights in the UAE. Putting gay stuff aside the UAE is such a huge violator of human rights in general.
