Beauty Bars -Now Everywhere!

It’s 5 o’clock on Friday, time for some much need R&R, so what do you chose, superficial self indulgence or happy hour? Martinis vs. manicures? Well ladies (and you metro-men), you can stop fretting. The age old dilemma has been solved. You can now have your cake and eat it too at the Beauty Bar. Kill two birds with one stone, buy a ten dollar martini and receive a free manicure. I would like to personally applaud the geniuses behind this ground breaking concept. If the thought of complete nirvana has ever crossed your mind while receiving a manicure, then you haven’t tried it with a dirty martini in your other (manicured) hand.

Earth Therapeutics Product Review: Beauty & Cosmetics

earththerapeutics.jpg

Sometimes there are products I get excited about and then there are the products I want to shout from the rooftops about. Some products I got to try out for review from Earth Therapeutics have me wanting to shout from the rooftops without a doubt.

Purifying Salt Scrub Detox Formula: Out of the three products, this is the one that I was most excited to try. I know the benefits of using Salt Scrub, especially those made with Dead Sea Salts. Earth Therapeutics Salt Scrub also contains organic Tea Tree Oil, which enhances cleansing and detoxification, and moisturizing essential oils. While the oils feel slick in the shower, once you get out and dry off, you feel nothing but baby soft skin. Using this once a week has given me fabulously soft skin, which has helped solved my winter-skin dilemma.

Soothing Leg Lotion: The scent of this lotion is heavenly. This lotion has Rosemary, Wild Mint and Aloe Vera. The consistency is almost like a silky shower gel. It spreads easily and absorbs nicely. It made my legs feel wonderfully soft and I loved the scent so much, that I put it on my hands before bed. I found the scent to be so relaxing, that it helped me fall to sleep.

Nail & Cuticle Care: If you are someone whose nails are brittle and whose cuticles crack easily, this is surely the nail conditioner for you. When I rubbed it on my nails and over my cuticles I could almost hear them saying, “ahhh,” in relief. The scent was a nice citrus scent, which I love. It contains Sesame Oil to moisturize, Pure Australian Tea Tree Oil to protect your nails from infection and an Organic Nutrient Matrix to nourish and deep condition your nail bed and cuticles.

Have you used any Earth Therapeutics products? Let me know what you thought in the comments.

Beauty PR: Bright Colored Nail Lacquers are Hot for Summer

Now that that summertime is fast approaching, now is the perfect time to sport a new manicure or pedicure. This season the hottest colors in nail lacquers also seem to be the brightest, especially since neon’s are a huge trend on nails and lips on the runway this season. So, grab your sunglasses and get set for bright, bold and beautiful summer!

Zoya's Indigo Hot Coral is great or give the orangey-coral, Heidi, a try. Better yet, try their La-Di-Da sampler for ultra-bright and neon colors. Hot pink is one color that is flying off salon and department store shelves! La Paz-itively Hot and Strawberry Margarita (which is a more crisp watermelon shade) by OPI are great bright pinks to go with. Dior’s Grenade Paprika, which is a mid tone pink with silver shimmer, their Portobello and butter LONDON's London Ungerground are also great bright shades. Also try Flirty fuchsia by essie.

Nail Polish Branding

hard%2520candy.jpg

Is it really still all about the color?

Editors gathered this past week at Bryant Park Hotel to view former founder; Dineh Mohajer 90’s color hit; Hard Candy as they launch into Wal-Mart. Yes, I said Wal-Mart. You may think I am being hard (no pun intended) on this polish performer but for those of you who worked at Neiman Marcus in the 90’s where the brand was largely carried at the time will remember when they were acquired by LVMH for $30 million. With that said, consumers today should expect the comeback to be fierce! They have had numerous owners over the years from Urban Decay who is now managed by Castanea Partners to Falic Fashion group. Yes, it’s quite confusing!

More importantly, Wal-Mart and Hard Candy should note that a lot has changed in the nail industry since the brands inception in 1995. For example, most brands today are formulated exclusively without the use of potentially toxic ingredients including phthalates, toluene, and formaldehyde. The releases on the launch include several classics from the previous Hard Candy collection but are they going to be in style? Do they have plans to reformulate to stay on pulse with the market?  We know that the economic downturn affecting salon manicures has not resulted in the increased spending of at-home nail kits. Women today have a strong desire to sustain a more “natural” look. Drug stores continue to dominate the sales of this category verse the mass market retailers, especially superstores like Wal-Mart. There is also a limited audience that is curbing the growth of these brands.

Vegan Nail Care

Today nail polish brands have gone vegan. The best selling colors are those that have a soft white wash and strive for the natural nail. Though the mystic black trend remains on the rise it’s not enough to build a brand entirely. Bright colors remain an editorial favorite on the toes of those well-heeled in the summer months but they are not as commonly sported on the hands.

Glitter, Not Really

For make-up (yes Hard Candy will continue its facial cosmetics) most of what we have seen forecasted for 2010 has not been glitter gloss but rather moist nude lips and very smoky eyes. Experts suggest that 2010 may be the year of the lip stain but uber shimmer, not so much.

Treatment Benefits vs. Color

When Hard Candy launched it was strictly about the color, no treatment or nail benefits. Most competitive color brands, even non-mineral, must have a treatment aspect as a return on the investment to the consumer, whether it be; UV protection, hydration, anti-oxidants, anti-aging, plumping and so forth. This remains regardless of price point. Consumers want nail nutrition while being chip free.

Let me know your thoughts. The packaging for Hard Candy is most adorable and I am confident that the press will love writing about it. My question remains, however, will consumers buy the product?

Beauty PR: Recap of Fashion Week with butter LONDON

What an awesome 2 weeks! butter LONDON’s creative director Nonie Crème used her expertise and predicted the hottest nail colours for Spring/Summer 2010. We once again created a custom colour for Vena Cava’s presentation – a shade we are calling Corporate Blue (a nod to its beginnings as a Stapler’s flier – read more at Style.com.) They sent this over to Nonie and voila, Nonie created the perfect blue shade – not too bright, not too dark, the perfect cobalt blue.

After a beautiful coat of Pillar Box Red (coral/red) at the Jenni Kayne show, we headed off to Alexander Wang where Nonie painted the models nails with a mix of Cream Tea and Nail Foundation. This gave the nails a “frosted glass” look. (see pics at beauty.com)

At Phi, it was all about the girl – clean, tidy, minimal nails.

Then came Betsey Johnson. After all of the nude and subdued colors, it was time to rock out. Betsey’s models were given the rockstar treatment with either a base coat of Branwen’s Feather (deep plum) with a topcoat of pink glitter (Rosie Lee) or, a basecoat of Thames (emerald green) with a topcoat of green glitter (Henley Regatta). During the presentation, the nails glittered in the lights and camera flashes – very kick ass, just like Betsey herself.

Last, but certainly not least, came the Calvin Klein show. The look was all about the tidy, luxuriousness of a perfectly manicured hand/foot over specific colour choices. Nails and toenails were clipped as short as possible, with only a tiny sliver of white on show. Cuticles were meticulously pushed and tidied, and skin was moisturized and rubbed to increase blood flow and give a healthy pink glow. Nails were left unpainted, while toes had a custom mix of half a bottle of Cream Tea plus half a bottle of Horse Power Nail Fertilizer, which gave a soft, milky sheen to the natural nail look.

All in all, an amazing Fashion Week with butter LONDON – let’s face it, it was all about the nails this season.

Minx Nails Will Be a Hot 2010 Beauty Trend

Touted as the next "fashion accessory," Minx Nails are really the newest nail trend to show off your daring, sassy side. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive back that requires heat (and a salon professional) to apply. The best part is that regardless of how you "wear" your nails--au naturale, acrylic, gels or silk wraps, Minx can be a good fit. Pierce Mattie has marked Minx Nails as a hot beauty trend for 2010.

Nail Polish Marketing w/ butter LONDON & Pierce Mattie

bL_JellyDisplay.jpg

Get ready to enjoy the summer heat with butter LONDON's new collection of Jellys. Each sherbet shade is designed to look bright and sexy on every skin tone which is what we are all looking to do for the summer. Juicy is the theme for this season’s nail which is exactly how each shade is describe. Twee is a sheer raspberry Jelly that becomes a bright magenta as you add more coats. Stroppy is a pale grape Jelly that becomes darker and wicked by every coat.  Chuffed, the last lacquer of the Jellys is a cool cantaloupe that turns into an iced tangerine shade with each coat. Can’t get much fruiter than that! Color Inspirations came straight off the runway at Calvin Klein, Vena Cava, Phi, and Jenni Kayne. Designers constructed their designs using a lot of nude colors in their collections.   Nails are never paid that much attention to which is why butter London wanted to make the nails for spring and summer stand out yet still have an ethereal effect.  You can go two ways with wearing the Jellys; one sheer coat, making the nails simple and elegant with a dose of color or making the nails look deep and rich by adding two or more coats.  Now we can make our nails darker or lighter with what we decide to wear out on the town or even to the beach.

Sexy feet are important to have with a pair of glamorous sandals. These Jelly shades will look fantastic on your toes as well. With the warm weather just around the corner, everyone should be purchasing at least one Jelly to go with their new open toe shoes.  You should always have pretty feet while relaxing at the pool side.

beauty pr: Neither Lipstick, nor Face Makeup, This Time Women Turned to Nail Polish during the Recession, according to Kline

Cosmetic Marketing: According to the freshly released data by worldwide research and consulting firm Kline & Company, U.S. sales in the cosmetics and toiletries market declined by 0.8% in 2009, not a detrimental drop considering the recent market situation and the last major recession of 1991, when sales declined by 1.9%. The data released for Cosmetics & Toiletries USA 2009 report indicate that sales have reached a total of $35.5 billion at the manufacturers' level.

The spillover from the economic crisis has weakened both consumers' confidence and spending. The luxury and professional product trade classes suffered the worst declines, while mass market and direct sales managed to hold their own.

Besides competitively-priced products, new value-oriented consumers are showing a preference for products that include multiple benefits. Anti-aging features such as skin firming and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles are still attracting consumers who are willing to pay premium pricing. SPF has also become popular in the beauty segment. Firmly held association of the sun's rays with aging signs is motivating both skin care and makeup marketers to add SPF specifications in their products; however, this trend is taking sales away from the last year's double-digit growth winner, the sun care products category.

While lipsticks and lip glosses declined by 5.3% in 2009, it wasn't face makeup that trumped lipsticks as it did in 2008. Nail polishes was the biggest winner, and the only category to post a double-digit increase, reaching 14.3% growth in 2009 due to the return of nail color in the fashion world, as well as the shift from nail salons to at-home application as economic instability motivated consumers to forego salon visits. Nail industry marketers also responded well to consumer demand and focused on new launches, offering a wide range of new products to engage the recession-stricken consumer.

The fragrances product class has suffered the most while other toiletries—which includes personal cleansing products, shaving products, and deodorants—suffered the least.

"The beleaguered fragrance market took an even harder hit in 2009 than it did in 2008, when we started to see serious decline," noted Nancy Mills, industry manager for Kline's Consumer Products practice. "There are a number of factors contributing to this, including fragrances losing their appeal as gifts, and over-crowded selection of fragrances leading to consumer confusion. On the other hand, anti-bacterial hand gels had a stellar year, with sales partly boosted by the unfortunate H1N1 flu epidemic. It is evident that practical purchases and small indulgences kept the industry alive during this very difficult period."

On the positive side, in 2009, natural products are no longer solely in the premium market as they continue to proliferate through the mainstream channels including mass market and direct sales. However, most of the natural product offerings are only natural-inspired although with fewer chemicals than conventional products, but still containing synthetic ingredients. The leading brands, including Jergens and Aveeno, are actively launching natural product lines at competitive pricing.

Cosmetics & Toiletries USA 2009 covers insights and data on market size, retail sales, channel breakdowns, trends, and forecasts for 29 major product categories; detailed profiles of about 30 leading marketers; and timely bulletins covering new products and corporate developments. Along with a detailed 2,000 page analysis, subscribers have also unlimited access to the report contents via a sophisticated, but easy-to-use database.

Nail Polish Replaces Lipstick as Recession Staple

In the beauty industry, when economic hardship strikes, lipstick has always been the one consumer product we can count on to keep our sales afloat. No matter the economic climate, lipstick has long held the title of "staple," that is until now. Imagine my surprise to learn today that in 2009, it was nail polish that in fact trumped lipstick as every woman's must-have beauty product and from the looks of all of the beauty PR we've been getting for butter LONDON, I suppose it clearly makes perfect sense now.

Reflecting back over the past year, I took a good look at which products I had more of among my beauty supplies. And wouldn't you know it, indeed, it was nail polish. Wondering how this crept up on us, I decided to ask Kelly Keeton, the nail polish blogger behind Vampy Varnish for her opinion:

Beauty PR: Estee Lauder Launches Their Holiday 2010 Collection

It's hard to believe that the holidays are just around the corner! I love this time of year, especially when beauty and makeup brands begin launching their holiday collections. Estee Lauder is launching two holiday collections this year, full of bright berries, plums and reds...and of course with a lot of shimmer.

“Fantasy, luxury and of course femininity were my inspirations for this Holiday collection. There are many lip and eye colors to play with and they all have a wonderful texture for an easy application.” Tom Pecheux, Creative Makeup Director, Estée Lauder

Pure Color Extravagant, which boast lip and eye palettes along with nail lacquer, is a gorgeous collection of intense and warm colors. The Holiday Compact Collection includes limited-edition solid perfume and powder compacts designed with enamel and Swarovski elements to highlight the holiday season.

What do you think of the collection?

Tween Beauty PR with OPI for Justin Bieber Nail Polish Collection

Tween sensation Justin Bieber is dipping his fingers into the beauty industry...literally. It was just announced last week that he has partnered with Nicole for OPI to develop and market the One Less Lonely Girl collection of nail lacquers targeted to screaming teen Bieber fans everywhere. And just in time for the holidays of course.

Each nail polish in the collection is named after one of Bieber's songs: One Less Lonely Glitter (lavender), Step 2 the Beat of My Heart (heart-shaped glitter), Give Me The First Dance (silver), Prized Possession Purple (grape), Me + Blue (dark blue) and OMB! (bright red.) Targeting a demographic where an equally attractive pricepoint is important means that the collection will be sold at mass retailers like Walmart (December) and Target (February.)

While there are no Justin Bieber fans in my household (I have 4 boys who cover their ears when they hear his name), I have to say this is a stroke of brilliance for Bieber's marketing team. Not only will teen girls now have clearer skin with ProActive, but now they'll have equally stylish nails with OPI. I predict that before Bieber's star burns out, there will be a hair care line as well. Thoughts?

Cosmetic Nail Polish News: OPI For Sale???

In the summer of 2009 when I spoke at Cosmoprof North America, on behalf of Pierce Mattie PR I happened to find myself in an elevator with some folks from OPI. When someone asked them, "What's next for OPI?" I recall the answer being, "We'll be opening our own branded salons." However, hearing the news today that Coty may be purchasing OPI for almost $1 billion, I can't help but wonder if the idea of being purchased by the beauty industry's largest fragrance company was even a mere dream back then.

A fragrance company acquiring a nail polish brand? It looks like Coty may be strategizing to expand beyond perfume, especially in light of last week's announcement that they would be purchasing Dr. Scheller Cosmetics AG. Could they be positioning themselves to be a true competitor to Estee Lauder and L'Oreal? What do you think?

Beauty PR: Diamancel

Throw your old, flimsy nail files away and treat your nails to something luxurious- Diamancel! Diamancel offers a line of genuine diamond files to give your nails the perfect shape and texture, each one containing actual diamond chips. Nail files have never been this glam!

Don’t like to spend too much time fussing over your nails? Diamancel files are easily more effective, working faster and better than ordinary files. Easily touch up mistakes and chips without filing the entire nail down. They last longer than ordinary files and can be washed and sanitized, which is great since most files gather build-up quickly.

The fiberglass base makes filing easier with its flexibility and resistance. Each file is specifically designed to cater to your nail type. Thin and brittle, or coarse and thick, there is an appropriate product for every category of nails. Regular files can sometimes split brittle nails and leave them worse than before, but the Diamancel’s fine file is especially delicate for weak nails. It is also great for finishing touches.

The medium file is for regular nails and general maintenance, while the coarse file is for naturally thick nails and toe nails. There is also an extra coarse file available for acrylic, which makes filing sculptured nails much simpler. In addition to diamond files, Diamancel makes a hand and finger callus file for removing hard, dry skin on the sides of the nails and foot callus files for removing and softening rough skin.

Diamancel diamond files retail at $28 each, but is well worth the beautifully sculpted, just left the salon appearance- without the effort. It’s a glamorous product that will leave you feeling just as elegant. Visit www.diamancel.com for more information and to find the file perfect for your needs.

Organic Beauty PR: Organic Glam

Organic Glam is a cosmetics line that ensures their products are all natural to give the wearer a timeless look that is healthy and natural. Organic Glam products are free of artificial preservatives and fragrances, and instead use mineral colors, herbal extracts and antioxidants. This protects your skin from harmful toxins and enhances your natural beauty. Organic Glam creators were inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s classic elegance, and they believe that Organic Glam will help wearers find that same classic glamour.

The Organic Pharmacy is founded by Margo Marrone, a homeopathic pharmacist and entrepreneur, and her husband, Franco. Her background allowed her to find herbal, homeopathic, and pharmaceutical ingredients to use in her products that are free of harmful toxins that are found in other cosmetics.

Nail Polish Public Relations Trend: The Rise of The Moon Manicure

Fashion Week has always set the trends for the following season, but one beauty trend that seems to have stuck for about 3 years now is the moon manicure. We first saw it in reverse with Thakoon in 2008, only to have variations follow over the years from Ruffian and Dior and continued to see it throughout last year with designers like Vena Cava. It seems every designer was showcasing a moon manicure as their nail look (almost as an accessory in and of itself.) So has the fevor died down? Absolutely not! Although, just for the record, this look is not new--it's actually a pretty vintage look stemming from the 1920's.

What I love is that designers are allowing nail art to be more art than solid nail color at their shows. As someone who is more excited by the hair, makeup and nail trends that occur during fashion week than the actual fashion, this is a welcomed change!

There are some great tutorials on how to achieve the moon manicure look such as a video tutorial on BellaSugar or the step by step guide on Jezebel, and my favorite of course being from Michelle of All Lacquered Up with some amazing pictures in her how-to guide.

Nail Lacquer Trends for Fall 2011

With fall racing forward, some of us are saddened by the fact that our summer holidays are closing up shop. However, I look at it as a new season to have fun with - wearing new apparel trends, adapting to refreshing fall colors and trying out new beauty ideas and nail fashions!

As we all know the traditional nail colors for fall are a little softer in color, more neutral tones, or darker, deep tones such as, dark green, navy, brown and beige. OPI has come out with their new “Touring America” collection, which is seasonally ideal! They have created various revitalizing tones for this fall while sustaining the traditional colors we all love. "Road House Blues” and “A-Taupe The Space Needle” are just two colors out of the “Touring America” line that are perfect for this fall!

However, if you are going to miss those bright and sassy colors, and like your nails to do the talking, Studio Nails is where you need to be! Studio Nails is a German based beauty company that has expanded to Australia and Switzerland, and hopefully will continue to expand! In addition to their nail products, they also provide other beauty products for your face, skin, eyes and lips.

Studio Nails has come up with fast and easy nail designs that have zero dry time, prevent your nails from chipping and lasts up to 5 days! All you have to do is buff your nail, put on the correct sized sticker, file off the excess design and for a high-gloss finish - put a clear, sealing, top coat on! If you want to remove the nail design it is as easy breezy as peeling off a sticker. Watch their tutorial to see just how quick and easy this is!

They have over fourteen designs - some of my favorites are the “drama queen” - a red and purple swirl design, and “all or nothing” - a black lace effect!

Nail Care PR: Layla Cosmetics Magneffect

I love innovative brands and when I came across Layla Cosmetics and their Magneffect three-dimension nail polish this past June, I became obsessed. I'm not an expert when it comes to nail lacquer, let alone nail art, but to have the ability to create something so eye-catching from the comfort of my own home that's a conversation starter? Well I'm first in line for that.

Magneffect nail polish is free of formaldehyde, toluene, camphor and DBP. It's quick drying and doesn't require a base coat...and no worries, it won't stain your nails without that base coat either! It dries very quickly and the polish iteself is very thick, so there is a bit of trial and error when you first begin to use the magnet to create multi-dimensional stripes on your nail with the pigment. You have to work fast, so make sure you have everything you need without distractions when you are ready to get started with this polish.

The magnet for Magneffect is attached to the top of the polish applicator, so after each application you need only flip over the handle and hold the magnet above *wet* polish for it to work its magic. I have Silver Galaxy, but I really love the look of Golden Nugget (olive) and Black Metal.

All Lacquered Up has some great close-ups on how Magneffects looks. The more the layers, the deeper the color and contrast of the magnetic striping. The best how-to video comes from Layla Cosmetics themselves, so be sure to check it out for yourself!

What do you think of magnetic nail polish? Will we see more of this with other brands? Tweet us your thoughts @PierceMattiePR.

Nail Care Success: Deborah Lippmann

Whenever I get a manicure I usually stick to the traditional OPI brands of nail polish; however I recently decided the much talked about Deborah Lippmann polish, Tiny Dancer. I usually pick soft pink colors as my default nail shade and Tiny Dancer is definitely one of my new favorites!

Deborah Lippmann is well known by celebrities and admired manicurist, who has created over 65 dazzling nail colors! I found the most interesting part about Lippmann’s collection to be her collaboration with celebrities! She has designed some shades and colors for specific celebrities, and has worked with admired stars to develop shades together.

Lippmann has crafted some super fun, glittery shades like, I Love the Nightlife, Across the Universe, and Bad Romance - these would be perfect for that exciting New Year’s Eve look! One of her nail polishes that I've fallen in love with is her polish Boom Boom Pow which actually has real gold dust within it.

You can purchase her nail lacquers at many beauty shops and online stores, like Nordstrom. To look at her fun and unique shades and names check out her Facebook page!

Hot Nail Care Trend for 2012: Flakies

We seem to look down at our fingers and what’s on them multiple times throughout the day…typing away at your desktop, paying out the cashier for your morning espresso, or even biting them out of nervous habit. Whatever the state of affairs, we always want our nails to look good!

The ‘crackle’ craze has come and gone.  Crackle polish seemed like it came and went faster than feathered hair and blue eye shadow. Now, it seems to be all about ‘flakies’ for nail polish trends in 2012.

Flakies can be used as another term for glitter, typically larger pieces of glitter that resemble tiny sheets of metal. With rocking your real nails, you might want to add a little pizzazz and bring some passion to those beds.  Flakies are a great way to do so, considering they come in pretty much any color ever invented to mankind, but are paramount when used a layering technique over a solid color. It's like the mature version of glitter for your nails.

Many local nails salons usually carry an array of color choices for flakies, yet you can also purchase them online or at a local beauty store.  If you want to mix it up, OPI’s Spark-tacular top coat is a multicolored addition of glitz and can be found at www.Sephora.com.

Are you a fan of flakies? What’s your favorite winter color?  Just as off the shoulder shirts, Converse, and side ponytails reappeared on the fashion scene in this recent decade, have flakies conceivably become what’s hot, simply due to the creation of childhood nostalgia?

Let us know what you think @PierceMattiePR.
