Speeding Up Your Hair Routine

Having a fashionable hairstyle, along with a smooth and shiny texture plays a significant role in how both men and women are viewed by society. Proper hair care is essential, but without the right skills and tools it can be time consuming. Steve Lococo, co-owner of Borrelli Beverly Hills and B2V/Borrelli-Vo Salons says that creating beautiful hair every day can be fast and easy with a few quick tips.

One of the biggest problems people face is dry, damaged hair. This can lead to dreaded frizz or fly aways. Towel drying most of the moisture out of your hair is the first step to combating this problem. Second, blow dry for about one minute. Apply your styling product and comb it through your hair and allow it to set. If product is applied when hair is too wet, it can dry it out, especially if the product contains alcohol.

A New Look for American Salon

We’ll have to wait until January to get a glimpse of the new look in store for American Salon. During my lunch with Editor-in-Chief, Marianne Dougherty last week she shared that the creative team has been working since July on a new format. The 130 year old book, the oldest continually published magazine in the country, started its run in 1877 and mainly focused on hair care products from France.

The new look will be more visual and graphic and have less copy, there will also be a supplement titled “American Beauty” focusing on skincare and makeup. Marianne was very excited and commented that the opportunity to direct the change was one of the primary reasons she came back to the magazine that had been her home for so many years.

We also compared notes on some of the interesting products in the marketplace, and in particular the emphasis on natural and organic brands. Two of our brands, Ojon and Korres fall into this category.

Ojon just launched Rare Harvest Tawaka™ Cleanser & Conditioner, a one-of-a-kind collection, limited in quantity duo rich in antioxidants to cleanse condition, repair and nourish the hair and skin. Concealed deep within the tropical rainforests of Central America for centuries, Tawaka combines two ancient tribal traditions (Ojon palm nut oil and Tawaka savage cacao) to create a rare, highly concentrated, potent anti-oxidant-rich hair and full-body one-of-a-kind line of care products. It’s the first of the Ojon products to be completely organic. Because Ojon is a Canadian company the rules dictating “organic” as a label are different. With over 97% of pure natural, organic ingredients, the Tawaka collection is paraben free, color and preservative free and hypoallergenic. Until now, the ingredients in these rare hair and skin remedies have been used exclusively by the Tawaka and Tawira tribes. Both groups continue to harvest and process their precious crops by hand for exclusive use in Ojon products using traditional tribal methods.

The Korres product line is considered to be natural. That means they use natural ingredients, like full fat Greek yogurt (great for oily skin), olive stones (used in an amazingly soft face scrub), Greek honey (a superb hydrator) and chlorophyll (known for its ability to absorb excess oil and sebum). The ingredients are chosen for how they can improve the health of your skin, rather than how they contribute to the product’s fragrance or texture. A personal favorite of mine is the Wild Rose Imperfection-Targeting Oil Pen that is comprised of pure wild rose extract (which is loaded with Vitamin C). This is a priceless tool, and the only one on the market I’ve come across that is for use after a pimple has had its 15 minutes of fame. The Vitamin C helps to heal the redness left behind, in addition to speeding up the healing process…Marianne is sure to be a fan as well.

Another “big in ’07” to keep on your radar, the revammped American Salon hits stands January 1st.

Super Glossy Lip Shine from e.l.f. Cosmetics

Sometimes the colors you see online are not exactly what they look like once you receive your product, however, e.l.f.'s Super Glossy Lip Shine colors looked exactly how they were presented online; I was thrilled....Read More.

A few days ago I had a hair emergency of sorts. The night before, my youngest son had a bad dream and wanted to sleep in our bed. He also asked for some milk in his "spill proof" sippy cup. If you are a mom, you know that spill proof cups are not necessarily spill proof. So we'll just say that milk and ovaltine are not good for your hair...Read More.

I choose Clairol Hydrience's Level 3 permanent hair color in Sable Cove, which is a dark brown. Neutrogena's MicroMist Tanning Spray

Looking at my pathetic white legs the other day made me finally spring to buy a sunless tanner. I've never used a sunless tanner before, mostly because of the fear of orange palms and streak marks. As trial and error has progressed, it seems that sunless tanners are getting better at lessening a beginner's chances of messing things up. Call it Sunless Tanning for Dummies, if you will...Read More.

Bangs are back in!

Just as with pin straight hair, wavy locks, bobs and any other hair style, bangs have a way of going out and coming back in. For a long while, my hair was all one length, but one day I looked in the mirror and so tired with what I saw, I promptly went to my hair stylist and asked for bangs several months ago. When you get bangs, it's important to take into consideration the shape of your face, but also your forehead size. You certainly don't want to drown your face in your hair or to look wider or heavier.

Unfortunately, I was given bangs that went straight across my entire forehead, which wasn't very flattering on me. When they were almost grown out, I decided to take to the scissors myself, create a part and then give myself angled bangs. What a difference! I look younger (yes!) and my face appears to look thinner, as well.

Many of the models gracing the catwalk now are sporting various styles of bangs, as well. There are those who have choppy bangs, those with angled bangs, some straight across and those with that thick bang look. Getting bangs can create a whole new look for you, but be sure that you talk with your stylist first on which type would be best.

Mascara That Works - Jan Marini's New Lash Lacquer Will Make Them Grow

Jan%20Marini.jpg

You see it all the time, mascara that claims to volume and defy lashes better than before. But will it make them grow? There has been a huge buzz in 2006 for professional skin care formulator Jan Marini on her new eyelash product that has been said to really do the trick.

So much so, that she is sold out! And today announced in WWD that she will continue the extension in 2007 with a hair care rollout called; Intervention Hair Rejuvenation.

I think that this new launch will really help to put the brand on the map. If you have not picked up a tube of Age Intervention Eyelash – a Breakthrough Technology invest now. But keep in mind most places that carry the brand are wait listed. Glow shows to be in stock.

Ojon Hair Products: pampering for your hair

I admit it, I color my hair. If I didn’t, I would have that grey Bonnie Raitt stripe at the front of my hair. When I color my hair it tends to dry and frizz a little more than usual, an existing problem that gets magnified.

I love my Joico products, but also love trying out new things as well. This week for a review I tried out some products by Ojon specifically for dry, dull and chemically-treated hair. From the moment I opened the Ultra Hydrating Shampoo, I knew this was going to be an experience.

Joico's Smoothing Balm is a hair product that is meant for straightening and protecting your hair, while being humidity-resistant. It is heat activated and comes in a 200ml bottle.

Kiss My Face: Obsessively Natural Organic Bath & Body Products Recognized As Beauty Pioneers

Kiss My Face was a green beauty company before green became an in thing. Every product they sell is organic without anything artificial at all. Yet going organic certainly doesn’t mean that quality is compromised at any point or that organic means a heavy price point. Most Kiss My Face users will tell you, their products are top notch and won’t break the bank in the process.

Kiss_my_face_green_beauty_c.gif

It’s not very often that you can go to a company’s website and read the background on how things were started, and if you can find one, you certainly will not find one so personable and down to earth. When you read the story behind how Kiss My Face began and their mission and purpose of their products you can’t help but feel their humor, lightheartedness, and of course their love for our great Earth. Their story is definitely a Squash to Riches story and one I think everyone should read.

Kiss My Face sells a variety of products for your bath, body and more. The products range from hair care to soap to facial moisturizers. Since we all know that organic is not only earth friendly, but also skin friendly, more people who may have a sensitivity to ingredients in other products may find comfort here.

If you use Kiss My Face, what is your favorite product from their line?

Bain de terre: White Lily Daily Leave-In Renewal Treatment

In the winter my hair gets so dry. And frizz? It is positively unruly. So this season I decided to take a new approach to my hair by using a daily leave in conditioner as opposed to the wash and rinse kind.

I received bain de terre, which is part of the Zoto’s brand, White Lily Daily Leave-In Renewal Treatment. What’s interesting about this bottle is that the opening is on the bottom with a cap that twists open to allow product to come through a hole in the center. This is the least messy bottom capped bottle I have ever used.

The scent is light, delicate and floral. The conditioner itself is not thick or pasty, but easily workable through your hair (and I have long, thick hair). I only needed a little more than a pea-sized amount for my hair. I rubbed it between my hands, smoothed it through my hair and then used a pick to make sure that it was evenly distributed. This renewal treatment is not heavy and doesn’t weigh your hair down.

After styling my hair as usual, I noticed a wonderful shine to my hair. It makes your scalp feel great too in these very dry months. The white lily daily leave-in renewal treatment has some fabulous ingredients for your hair, such as Soy Protein, Gingko Biloba and Sunflower Seed Extract. It definitely makes my hair look and feel healthier.

You can find it on www.zotos.com under bain de terre Spa Therapy for your hair.

Sharon Bolton Scents gifted me with her Body Wash, Lotion and Perfume Oil in Luv. Luv smelled like heaven. It smelled like luxury in a bottle. Luv is the scent of rare pink gardenias, lush Hawaiian white flowers, with a hint of creamy vanilla and a whisper of white musk. Darshan Beauty products are all natural, and because of this, they are only made in small batches to prevent them from spoiling. Product Review: Ojon Daily Intensive Shine Treatment

ojonserumI have been in love with Ojon hair products since I discovered them with the Nourishing Hair Ritual. I’m in heaven with the scent, which is a coffee, nutty type fragrance, but most importantly, I am impressed with the results that Ojon delivers. I have been using the Daily Intensive Shine Treatment for about 6 weeks now and I am wondering how I lived without it.

The Daily Intensive Shine Treatment is made of pure Ojon palm nut oil and Vitamins A & E. The Ojon oil is suspended in tiny microspheres and lay on the bottom of the jar. When using this product, if you have moved the jar around, you will want to wait until the microspheres have settled on the bottom before attempting to dispense the serum. It only takes 2-3 pumps to cover hair root to tip (depending on the length of your hair). The Ojon oil fortifies, conditions and nourishes your hair and is safe even if your hair is color-treated.

Between my pregnancy hormones wreaking havoc on my skin and hair and this super cold winter weather, my scalp is so dry. Lamas Beauty: Healthy Natural Ingredients That Deliver

Today while attending a webinar by Global Cosmetic Industry Magazine, Peter Lamas introduced his brand, Lamas Beauty. The topic was Beauty Goes Green and Lamas Beauty definitely fits into that category as they are 100% Vegan. However, it wasn’t only his products that caught my attention, but the fact that he was prompted into action to create them through life events. It is brands like Lamas Beauty that often catch my attention because I love hearing the passion and circumstances that made the brand possible.

Peter Lamas’ passion for organic Vegan products stems from the unfortunate circumstances that resulted in cancer striking his mother, then three close family friends (all sisters), and then his client at the time, Jackie Kennedy Onassis. After learning that certain chemicals they encountered in their lifetime may have been the culprit, Lamas set out to create beauty products that were safe and led the way creating the first line of hair care products free of parabens and sodium lauryl sulphate; several products from this same hair care line is also Certified Organic. Nearly all of his skin and body care products are paraben-free and he is currently working on converting his entire line over using new ingredients that replace parabens.

Some of the products that caught my attention are:

Hair Style Trends: Texture Is Back Without The Smell!

As we begin the Spring and Summer months there’s a new hairstyle trend becoming more noticeable to go along with the season’s fresh and sassy style: texture. The textured look isn’t just curl, it’s anything from volume and lift to soft waves and extreme curls. This new trend had me thinking about adding life back to my hair, which is currently pin straight. In the past I used to perm my hair for texture. I know what you are thinking, “A perm?” Yes, a perm, and perms are not what they used to be—smelly, poodle curled, brittle hair.

I know, even the thought of smelling like a skunk for several days is nothing short of appealing, but I recently found that Zotos has come out with a new perm formula called Texture EFX that is the perm minus the smell. I currently use a few Zotos products, so I am always checking out their site to see what’s new. Texture EFX’s has two formulas, one for normal and resistant hair and one for color treated or previously permed hair so that women who chose to also color treat their hair can also perm their hair without worrying about fading and breakage. Both of the formulas use the cysteamine chemistry technology to produce healthy curls full of shine and texture. A fortifying splash is also introduced during the process to strengthen hair and eliminate that traditional odor from yesterday’s perms. So there goes that notion that perming your hair means living in isolation until the smell has disappeared. Another benefit is that the color treated formula processes in as little as 2-3 minutes, which is nothing short of amazing.

The processing tools that you can use with this product are also not set to the typical time-consuming perm rods of the past. You can get creative using bridal tulle, large bender rods and even aluminum foil to accomplish a variety of textured looks. If you are interested in achieving this no-smell textured look, be sure to discuss it with your stylist, as they can purchase it at Sally’s Beauty Supply for about $6. So no odor, great price and I can have a long lasting textured look in under 5 minutes? I’m sold.

Pure & Petal: Fragrance For Your Hair

So you shampoo your hair and wish to keep that fresh smelling fragrance all day long. Most of us would love to have fragrance for our hair, but without drying it out or weighing it down. Elizabeth Pyshnov, owner and creative mind behind Pure & Petal hair fragrances, felt the same way and decided to do something about it.

Pure & Petal, located in Canada, is the one online store that women seeking gloriously smelling hair can flock to without the worries that they are adding product to their hair that will alter their hairstyle, weigh it down or frizz it out with any drying alcohols. This also means that there is no alcohol-related smell, as you would get with a typical perfume. The Pure & Petal hair fragrances contain silk protein, Vitamin B5 and are silicone-free and alcohol-free.

Having tried this product myself when the company first launched in November of last year, I can tell you that I absolutely think Elizabeth’s product is genius. The mist itself is very light and the scent is not overpowering. You spray it on about 8 inches away from your head once you are done drying and styling your hair. The fragrance lasted most of the day and had absolutely no negative effects on the condition of my hair.

Pure & Petal offers 4 fragrances: Linden Blossom, Sublime Citrus, Summer Passion and Heavenly Clean. My favorite is Linden Blossom, which is a combination of the linden blossom and grapefruit. Heavenly Clean comes in second, literally smelling like I just washed my hair.

At the beginning of this month, Pure & Petal began selling its hair fragrances at retail outlets in Canada. Soon we will be able to find them at retailers here in the states. For now, we can still order them online, and believe me, I’m sure you will love this product as much as I do.

Tips To Avoiding A Bad Hair Day

A bad hair day can ruin anyone’s look and can even make you left feeling like you need to wear a bag over your head. It is so important to pamper your hair to keep it in top shape, preventing bad hair days from ever heading your way.

If your scalp tends to dry, make sure to treat it right with a good scrub. Don’t go overboard, you only need to use a scrub once every 10 days. I recommend Korres Green Silt & Corallina Oligoelements Hair & Scalp Scrub. Its not harsh or abrasive the way some body scrubs can be, but leaves you without that embarrassing dry skin flaking off into your hair.

I can never bypass a great hair mask. I love using Ojon’s Restorative Hair Treatment, which uses 100% natural Ojon palm nut oil. If your hair is really is bad shape, it’s a hair mask that can be left on overnight.

When it comes to shampoo and conditioner, I’m again extremely partial to Ojon. It’s a combination of its wonderfully nutty fragrance and how soft and manageable it makes my hair. I’ve used their Ultra Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner that is part of their 5-Piece Nurturing Hair Ritual Kit and find it amazing (even my husband loves to use it).

If you don’t like nutty fragrances, you may then like Kiss My Face’s Miss Treated Shampoo & Conditioner. I also use this shampoo/conditioner set and find I reach for it when I am in need of some aromatherapy. The Miss Treated Shampoo and Conditioner have a Eucalyptus and Peppermint fragrance that is great for stress release, but also to boost your mood. It’s an organic product that also uses essential oils to moisturize your scalp and is great for chemically treated and overstressed hair.

Blow Dry Your Way To Frizz-Free Hair

Don't let humidity get the best of you--I know how frustrating it can be to have perfectly good salon-looking hair suddenly frizz out on you. All you need are the right tools, products and good technique when it comes to creating picture perfect hair while combating the frizz.

hair_care.jpg

First, a great blow dryer is a must, preferably one with a nozzle for aiming the air directly in the desired location and angle you want it to dry your hair. The T3 Bespoke Labs Evolution Dryer uses tourmaline-infused ceramic components to emit maximum negative ionic and far infrared energy, which together eliminate frizz and drying time while creating sleek and shiny hair. It's nozzle directs airflow exactly where you want it and blows a concentrated amount of negative ions and far infrared heat onto large sections of hair.

Second, the right styling aids are a must. I interchangeably use Joico's K-Pak Smoothing Balm and Ojon's Daily Intensive Shine Treatment. Both add shine to your hair and both counteract frizz. You'll also want to make sure you are using the right brush. A round bristle brush will grab your hair and smooth it as you dry your hair root to tip.

When drying your hair, make sure that you only dry sections at a time; don't try to dry it all at once. Start by clipping th top half of your hair to the top of your head and blow dry the bottom half aiming your blow dryer straight down over your brush, but about 5cm away from your hair so that you don't burn it. Slowly brush through hair as you dry keeping the dryer nozzle aimed downwards while you continue to dry your hair, small sections at a time. If you have any flyaways or a small amount of frizz, spray your hairspray into your palms and smooth through your hair.

Have any additional hair care tips you want to add? Let us know in the comments!

Sheila Stotts: Perfecting The Art Of Hair Extentions

celine_dion.jpg

Leave it to an expert to create a true revolution. When it comes to hair extensions and implementing new technologies, Sheila Stotts harnessed her talent and experience creating the amazing looks of celebrity beauties in print, on runways, on television and on the big screen. The result: a signature line of products and tools to support the Stotts philosophy of hair design where revolution rules and change makes the hair grow longer. Welcome to the new world of hair extension technology.

Among many of Sheila's amazing products are her Advanced Removal Tool and Wood Flat Iron Brush. The Advanced Removal Tool (ART) delivers a precise amount of solvent for easy bond removal of hair extentions. The serrated teeth accelerate bond breakage, reducing removal time up to 50% without damaging hair. The Wood Flat Iron Brush is made of natural boar bristles. It is specifically designed to achieve a flat-iron look near the scalp where bonds can’t tolerate high heat by use of the brush and the heat of a blow dryer.

Sheila Stotts has a mass celebrity following that include Rene Zellweger, Mandy Moore, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Halle Berry, Christina Aguilera and Nicole Richie. She owns an Aveda Concept Salon in LA and is a preferred vendor of Paul Mitchell the School. Check out images of her celebrity clients wearing her extentions on Sheila's MySpace page. Kathryn Heigl Rocks the Red Carpet with Joico

usweekly_joico_march10_08.jpg

So the biggest awards show of the season finally happened! Sunday saw The Oscars and we all eagerly watched the arrivals on the red carpet to see what they had chosen. I must say, many of the celebrities played it safe. Choosing to stick with classic simple hair and makeup. Dresses were simple too, blocks of color and great tailoring, not as much glamour and drama that we have seen at Oscars in the past.

The only person who really took a risk (in my opinion) was La Vie End Rose star - Marion Cotillard. Although, I am sure many blogs and weeklies wouldn’t agree with me!

Hair wise, the most outstanding look of the evening belonged to Katherine Heigl. The Grey’s Anatomy alum and star of 27 dresses dazzled on the red carpet. Her hair was styled by Sean Flanigan, who was inspired by Marilyn Monroe and decided to pay homage. A big fan of Joico products, Sean set her hair with rollers using Joico JoiGel to create those beautiful curls. He finished off by locking her hair with the new Design Collection Humidity Blocker. He had to, it was raining and the temperatures were in the high 70s under the tents! Katherine Heigl won an US Weekly “Best Retro Style” Award for her style.

You can check it out in this week’s issue, which is in stores now!

Beauty PR: Paul Mitchell Philanthropy

Would you believe me if I told you that one of the beauty industries biggest companies has a co-founder that used to make a measely three dollars a day returning bottles while living out of his car? Well it's true, and it's the rags to riches story of Jean Paul Dejoria, co-founder and president of Paul Mitchell, the multi-billion dollar beauty biz leader.

Because he is very familiar with what it's like to be in an unfortunate position, philanthropy is very important to him and he does everything in his will to instill it into the legacy of his company.

dejoria

"It’s about each of us paying more than our share of rent on this planet in order to help many people have much better lives or even have the chance to live one. What a great culture that is!" -Dejoria

Lauren Thompson, student at the Paul Mitchell partner school, Parisian Beauty Academy, shares her personal exposure to the big-hearted nature of the Paul Mitchell family:

Heather: What role does fundraising play in your day to day studies?

Lauren Thompson: Since March, I have participated in two different large-scaled fundraising activities. The first being a fashion show that raised funds for such charitable organizations as Leeza's Place and The Larry King Cardiac Foundation. As a school we each committed to selling 100 bookmarks in addition to the raffle and show tickets. The second fundraiser I just finished was the 2008 Summer Caper, an annual nationwide (all the Paul Mitchell Schools) product sale whose proceeds contributed to various organizations including the Special Olympics and City of Hope.  The role it plays is pretty significant.  The fashion show is a big event the whole school participates in and even gets graded on.  The fact that such a big event is also a fundraiser proves the fundraising importance the structure of the school.

Heather: Does the charitable involvement of Paul Mitchell, both at your scale and the larger scale, give you a sense of pride?

Lauren Thompson: Absolutely, I feel like it makes every effort worth my while knowing that I am contributing my time to an organization that gives back.  Upon graduation I would love to continue to be a vehicle of Paul Mitchell's charitable efforts.  It is nice to know there are large organizations who respect the importance of giving back to the community.

Heather: Do you feel the efforts are solely based on advancing the image of Paul Mitchell?

Lauren Thompson: No, I know that everyone involved really cares about giving back.  We are all inspired by Jean Paul Dejoria's generousity and passion in philanthropy. He wants to create opportunities for those less fortunate.  It is very important to him and the rest of the company to instill a sense of benevolance in anyone who is affiliated with the company.

So the next time you are using your super skinny serum (and if you aren't using super skinny, get on it), remember that it's coming from a company that has an enormously altruistic culture. It's always nice to hear about companys who are giving back not only in a PR capacity, but also for the sheer benefit of those they donate time and effort to.

Hair Style Trend: The Updated Brush Cut

To set yourself apart from other men at the office this Spring, Details Magazine profiled the updated brush cut, reintroduced by Eugene Souleiman for Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2009 runway show. Instead of taking a tip from Hollywood hair heavyweights such as Patrick Dempsey, George Clooney, and for the younger generation, Zac Efron, take a pointer from a new twist on an old hair style classic.

How To Achieve the Fall 2009 Hair Trends

Chanel HairstyleThis Paris Fashion Week, the accessory aspects of the shows, including hair and makeup were, defined ready-to-wear. Maybe this was to offset the truly not-ready-to-wearness of many of the clothes.

According to the designers from Paris Fashion Week, you have two hairstyle options for fall and they are polar opposites. Although there were some different styles displayed on the runway, there seemed to be competition going between two: super-slick updos and natural, flowy hair. While flipping through pictures of Fashion Week, almost every show featured these two styles. It was like the hair gods commissioned it. Seriously though, what I like is the simplicity of these hairstyles. They are uncomplicated and pretty ways for us common folk to wear our hair. So, will these trends be reflected off the runway?

After a decade of incredible success serving a group of loyal and loving clients, Joico (a Pierce Mattie PR client) Artist Robert Josef of the Robert Josef Salon in Dallas wanted to celebrate. Instead of simply throwing a party, however, he decided that the celebration should benefit one of his other passions—AIDS Arms, Inc. Chelsea New York Celebrity Hair Stylist Alyn Topper Talks Toner

alyn%20topper%20pro.bmp

THE COLOR CURE

If coloring the hair has left a massive out growth and you’re at a crossroads; do you buy the hot new pair of Manolo’s or get your color done?

Here is a way to have it all!  Highlights, just like natural hair can lighten over time making the contrast from your new growth absolutely garish. Toners are a time saver and quite less expensive service. Toners have the ability to soften the highlights and blend them into the out growth. This keeps the color looking fresh and vibrant and buying time in between highlights. It’s a grea quick fix for those who are budget minded.

Alyn Topper is a celebrity hair stylist at Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea Manhattan. To book an appointment with Alyn Topper call (212) 206-7991.

New York City Hair Salon Stylist: Alyn Topper (Beauty Editor RX Favorite) NYC Hair Colorist Talks About The Big Apple

Alyn Topper is a celebrity hair stylist who you may have seen a few years back on Bravo's 'Blow Out.' Alyn is also a beauty editor RX favorite and is often quoted in Vogue, Allure, Glamour and Elle. Alyn has recently relocated from Beverly Hills and is now available for fabulous hair styling in Chelsea Manhattan’s Chris Chase Salon.

We sat down with Alyn Topper to get the dish on what’s next for this superstar of hair.

What are you bringing with you to NYC that you learned from the celebs in Beverly Hills?

I will be intermixing my west coast celebrity influences into the east coast scene with sun kissed highlights done with free hand painting called balayage. My cutting abilities will allow my clients hair to move freely and look as if every day they were going to a red carpet event. I will also being drawing a bit of influence from Berlin and using it inspiration and translating it into my work.

What are the trends in haircuts and color that you are seeing for 2010?

I feel as if all the trends are progressing out of Berlin and what I see is a movement into the late seventies and early eighties. As the trend trickles down to mainstream you will see layered hair and rounder shapes. The late seventies look- The hair will be flatter at the scalp and become fuller on the ends. A great example was Kate Moss on the cover of W for the fall fashion issue. Also you will see variations of this look in the new SATC movie coming out. Early eighties was a lot of undercutting and disconnecting which we are already seeing in the states examples are being worn by the likes of Pink and Rihanna.

What is your price range on long hair cut and color?

My goal in coming to New York is for every woman to feel what it’s like to have an 800 dollar hair cut. I am in the art of hair because it’s my passion and I love to make women beautiful. Everyone deserves to look and feel their best. This is why I have decided to make my fees affordable for everyone.  My fees are; woman's haircut /blow-dry is 120 and color begins at 120.

NYC Chelsea Hair Salon Stylist: Alyn Topper on A Quick Lesson

LEARN A LESSON FROM ALYN TOPPER

A big part of celebrating any occasion is having the hair styled before going out. If this is not in the budget, plan ahead. Next time when in the stylist’s chair instead of telling her about the new boyfriend or ex-boyfriend ask the stylist to show and explain a step- by- step guide for blowing out the hair. Also, I have many clients that will ask me to show them a couple of quick styles that are realistic for them to do at home. This takes no time at all and any professional stylist would be flattered to show off their new techniques and trade secrets.  I suggest doing trial runs at home before the big day to gain some experience. This will give confidence and help perfect the fab style trying to be achieved. Looking like a millions bucks doesn’t mean one has to spend the monetary equivalent.

Alyn Topper is a celebrity hair stylist at Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea Manhattan. To book an appointment with Alyn Topper call (212) 206-7991.

Hair Care Tips for Graying Hair from New York City Hair Stylist; Alyn Topper

brown%20eye%20shadow.jpg

THE SHADOW SOLUTION

If someone has premature grey hair and receives single process color it may leave a line of demarcation and can look unattractive if not touched up. Alyn recommends the next time the hair is colored immediately go to a cosmetic store, such as M.A.C., and have a make-up artist match the hair color to an eye shadow color. When the hair starts growing out take the eye shadow applicator and apply it to the new growth. This is trick Alyn Topper learned on set. The eye shadow will blend in the outgrowth making it undetectable and taking years away from one’s look.

Beauty Marketing w/ Pierce Mattie PR: Hair Care on a Budget: Dermatologist Offers Money-Saving Tips to Keep Hair Looking Good in a Bad Economy

These days, saving a little money here and there is all the rage. Even small changes - carpooling to work or making coffee at home - can really add up. But when it comes to cutting back on hair care, many people might be hesitant to make significant changes for fear that it could impact their looks and the health of their hair. That's where a dermatologist can help.

Speaking today at the American Academy of Dermatology's SKIN academy (Academy), dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, discussed how to have healthy, beautiful hair without breaking the bank.

"There are many ways that we can trim our hair care expenses, from going to the salon less frequently to using fewer products," said Dr. Mirmirani. "But, the ultimate goal with any type of change in our hair care routine should be to maintain healthy hair."

To understand what it means to have healthy hair, Dr. Mirmirani pointed out that hair is a fiber; its structure and integrity must be maintained in order for the hair to stay healthy. The root of the hair, also known as the hair follicle, produces the hair fiber which is made up of hair keratins (fine, fiber-like structures packed very tightly together and wrapped on the outside with a very hard outer cuticle). The cuticle of the hair functions much like the shingles on a roof, by protecting the underlying structure. When the outer cuticle is damaged, then the cuticle breaks apart and the inner fibers are exposed - resulting in frizzy, flyaway or lackluster hair.

Since healthy hair requires an intact cuticle, Dr. Mirmirani advised that any hair care routine or products used to clean or style the hair should be gentle enough to maintain the structure of the hair fiber and cuticle. With this is mind, she offered several tips on how consumers could make small changes to save money on hair care without compromising hair health.

The PR of Sleep: BeautyZZZ

Everybody needs their beauty sleep. Not only does sleep repair and rejuvenate the body, a good night’s rest has endless health benefits, including better memory and alertness, reduced levels of stress, and a healthier heart. The only thing that makes sleep even more beneficial is BeautyZZZ, a silk pillowcase designed to naturally beautify you while you sleep.

Using an ordinary cotton pillowcase is simply an injustice to both hair and skin – it’s proven that cotton (even organic and Egyptian types) absorbs moisture, robbing it from your body and contributing to dry, wrinkled skin and brittle hair. Just like using a nighttime moisturizer or mask, silk pillows help to hydrate and refresh skin and hair overnight.

Cosmetic Retail Marketing: Ulta Beauty Stores Show A Rise in Sales

Sephora isn't the only beauty retailer making waves...Ulta, beauty retailer of mass, prestige and salon products, as well as in-house salons to boot, reported an increase in sales in the third quarter of this year compared to the same time period last year, and an increase for 2010 overall. I like the sound of that.

It sounds like the beauty industry is making gains again and that's good news for everyone. If consumers are buying more personal care items again, then it may be the sign that we're getting back on track for spending overall. Can we say we are out of a recession yet? Please?

Ulta's profit may have also risen due to the great promotions they always have going on discounting their sku. Consumers may want the cosmetics, fragrance and skin care, but at a lower pricepoint than if they went directly to the department store. Well, honestly, who doesn't?

What do you think?

Do Rare Ingredients in Beauty Products Make For Better Public Relations?

Remember in 2008 when Pierce Mattie PR put out its trend report for the Top 10 Ingredients Trends for 2009? Argan Oil topped that list. This Moroccan oil was considered exotic and since it was not yet found in every beauty product out there, products that did contain it appeared all that more interesting. Soon the uptick began and you can find Argan Oil in brands such as Josie Maran, Moroccan Oil, Laveve, Cle de Peau and Liz Earle. Did the rarity of this oil found only in Africa make them that much more appealing? Did their Beauty PR team attain better placements in magazines, broadcast and online media because this ingredient differentiated these brands from others out there? My opinion is yes.

Consumers are always looking for the next best thing...this includes ingredients in beauty products that are rare or make you stand out from the others. And where there is consumer demand, there is demand in the media as well. (Beauty publicists rejoice!)

So what will we see more of in 2011? Whole plant extracts, bamboo, and sea whip to name a few. What trends are you seeing in terms of cosmetic, hair and skin care ingredients?

Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo Proves to be the Perfect Remedy for Holiday Hair Styling

In the year of its 30th anniversary, Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo proves that a classic never goes out of style as consumers prepare hair for holiday celebrations.

Perhaps no time is more relevant than the winter holidays to celebrate this iconic shampoo as consumers look forward to a month of festivities, parties and up-dos. However, perfecting holiday looks takes styling that can add 10 weeks-worth of residue to hair, leaving it looking lifeless and dull.

Clinically proven to instantly remove 90% of dulling residue left by shampoos, conditioners and styling products, Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo has been trusted by consumers and editors to help restore men and women's hair's manageability, luster, bounce and volume that are depleted after using excessive styling products.

"A lot of girls don't realize that regular use of their favorite shampoo, conditioner and other styling products leave a residue on their hair which prevents it from being really shiny," said Neutrogena Brand Ambassador Vanessa Hudgens. "That's why I use an anti-residue shampoo like Neutrogena's to bring back the natural shine to my hair."

Recently honored with a 2010 Allure Best of Beauty Award, Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo has been removing dulling residue for over three decades.  With 30 years of hair care innovation since the launch of the shampoo, Neutrogena returned to the labs to reexamine the classic formula's ability to remove residue left from today's shampoos, conditioners and styling products.

In clinical tests, after hair tresses were processed with various combinations of styling products, they were analyzed to determine how much residue was removed. Hair fibers were stained and observed using fluorescence microscopy- which showed residue via a glowing light. After treatment with Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo, hair fibers were again observed and showed significantly less red - removing 90% of the dulling residue and leaving hair clean, shiny and looking its healthiest.

Oscar Hair with Reese Witherspoon

I adore Reese Witherspoon. I don't think she has ever had a beauty or fashion moment that was subpar for me. At last night's Oscar's, I was completely in love with her glamorous, yet simple (looking) hairstyle.

Extensions are back "in" again and we suspect Reese had some help in the length department when going for this mod-60's style. Frederic Fekkai hairstylist, Renato Campora, was behind this look which gave fullness and volume to Witherspoon's hair. Not only does a high ponytail look elegant, it also makes you look younger because it pulls your facial skin taunt (so wrinkles seem to disappear--not that Reese had any to being with!)

Do you love it?

Vidal Sassoon is both a European and American beauty staple. The professional salons and hair care products have been responsible for edgy styles and healthy hair for years, and the brand continuously revolutionizes the hair care industry. Sassoon doesn’t represent hair styling, but rather Hair Design. Sassoon hair designers believe in achieving perfect, individual, and practical beauty, and this brand goal has been key to Sassoon’s success since it’s infancy.

However, what the public often forgets is that Vidal Sassoon is much more than just recognizable brand name. Vidal Sassoon is an expert -- a hairdresser whose extraordinary life has taken the fashion world by storm. Sassoon, best known for his geometric hairstyles, began his eponymous label 69 years ago. Now, at 83 years of age, the famed British-born hairdresser is telling his story.

Women Chose A Perfect Hair Day Over Weighing 10 Pounds Less

hair%20oil%20public%20relations.jpg

Orofluido, a premium hair oil inspired by the beauty rituals of ancient Morocco, Egypt and Phoenicia, is a luxury leave-in treatment that contains organic Argan, Cyperus and Linseed oils to impart incredible silkiness, lightness and shine on all hair types. The year-old brand, in association with U30 Group, a comprehensive market research company, recently polled 300 women nationwide to gage their beauty and lifestyle habits.

In addition to confirming the belief that women really are fixated on the appearance of their hair, the survey revealed safety as a high priority for the women polled. An impressive 82 percent of those surveyed wear makeup containing an SPF, and although all of the respondents said they use sunscreen, only 38 percent wear it all year round. However, the other 62 percent slather it on during the summer months. Better yet, 93 percent claim to wear a seat belt at all times, and 78 percent do not text while driving. Oprah would be pleased.

ULTA beauty stores have graced us with their presence for the past 20 years. With stores in over 40 of our nation's states, their success should come as a shock to no one.

Hair Care PR: UV Protection for Your Tresses

Thanks to achievements in science we’re all aware of the risks of sun exposure on your skin and modern day technology has provided us with numerous sources of protection. Unfortunately, when it comes to protection many people overlook the gorgeous mane on top of their head. Although skin cancer is not a concern for your hair, prolonged sun exposure can result in damaged tresses.

Extended periods of UV rays can damage the cuticle and even the inner structure of the hair. Faded hair color, frizzy hair, split-ends and brittle, thin hair are all signs of sun damage. Luckily, there are various ways to keep your hair safe from the dangerous UV rays. The most fool-proof way to keep your hair protected is to simply don a hat when outside. The coverage will block 100% UV penetration, keep you cool and protect your face from sun exposure as well.

For the portions of your hair that hang out unprotected or if a hat just isn’t your style, snatch up styling products or leave-in conditioners with SPF. Stylists have evolved their products for multi-uses, many of which incorporate sun protection. Typically the SPF ranges from 10-15, with 15 being the golden number.

Hair Care PR Launch: Max Green Alchemy Launches Innovative Matte Paste Hairstyling Product

organic%20hair%20care%20public%20relatinos.jpg

Max Green Alchemy - the Pure Plant Origin personal care products company - has added an innovative hair styling product to its Scalp Rescue hair care range. New Matte Paste creates a dry-look matte finish favored by celebrity stylists for definition and hold without adding shine or using toxic chemicals. It enables fashion-forward hairstyles and can be reworked with water for a quick touch-up anytime. With a fresh citrus unisex scent, it's alcohol free so it can't cause dryness, and is wax, silicone and pvp-free so it can't build-up on the hair, scalp or in the environment. The 5.5 oz tube has a suggested retail of $15.

"Salons love our products because of what they have in them and, also, what they don't have. There is growing interest from stylists and clients as they seek natural and organic products but there have been few choices of ultra-natural, professional-quality styling products that perform like their chemical-laden cousins," says Dave Karlak, President of Max Green Alchemy (MGA). "Many stylists aren't aware that brands perceived as 'natural' rely on petrochemicals like polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to provide hold or silicone for shine. Salons have had such positive experiences with our Shampoo, Conditioner, Styling Gel, Texture Paste, Sculpting Gel and Pomade they've been asking for more. Matte Paste is our latest creation."

Hair Care PR: Spring 2012's Slicked Back Hair Trend with Pravana

It's a little Robert Palmer Addicted to Love-ish, but the hair slicked back and pin straight is about to hit the trend stream this Spring...and it's being done in a variety of ways. From Carmen Marc Valvo's tight part to Cosetllo Tagliapietra's pulled back style to Derek Lam's side-part (almost giving a male-like appareance)...the majority of the hairstyles seen on the runway for Spring Summer 2012 had some variation of a tightly pulled back hairstyle.

While this look may not be for everyone, one thing you don't want is a product that only keeps the hold for only a few hours of the day (because then you just look undone and dishelved with this look.) Pravana's Bold Defiant Design Gel has the strength without the drying and flaking that a strong hold gel usually leaves behind. Pravana's Super Shape Hairspray also allows for flexibility in the hold you are looking for--from flexible to firm, a little goes a long way.

Will you be wearing this hairstyle trend come Spring? Tweet us @PierceMattiePR and let us know!

Beauty PR News: Unilever Acquires Kalina Cosmetics in Russia

In a year when many of the cosmetics giants are acquiring brands in Korea, Hong Kong and most of the Asian market, Unilever surprises us by acquiring 82% market share of Kalina, a Russian cosmetics, hair care and personal care brand. As we've seen with most countries affected by a ravaged economy, the personal care market continues to grow, and Russia is no different.

The aquisition allows Unilever to continue it's competitive advantage alongside beauty giant P&G. Interesting that they chose a Russian brand though, are they seeing something in the Russian beauty market that others have not? Tweet us your thoughts @PierceMattiePR.

Mother’s Boycott Johnson & Johnson, PR Tips to Turn This Around

No More Tears? Not really, as a campaign to boycott Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo in the U.S. is grabbing the attention of the media. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is getting noticed by bringing to light that the popular baby shampoo contains formaldehyde, a known carcenogen (and deemed as such by the FDA this past June), as well as, dioxane. Now everyone from CBS News to MSNBC are associating Johnson & Johnson with cancer. This is a PR nightmare for Johnson & Johnson for sure, especially as a trusted brand for so many years by moms everywhere (including myself.)

So how can Johnson & Johnson quell the firestorm that has erupted?

  • Acknowledge that they do indeed sell the same shampoo abroad without the 2 toxins.
  • Acknowledge The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics' letter and publicly reach out to them to work together.
  • Commit to making the change here in the US of reformulating their baby shampoo.
  • Assure parents, doctors and caregivers that babies safety and care is their number one priority.

I would even go so far as to say to remove Johnson's Baby Shampoo from store shelves to show their sincerity and taking their committment to safety seriously. In lieu of this shampoo, push the Natural line as an alternative until the reformulated, safer, shampoo replaces the current product.

While the toxins mentioned are in trace amounts, no parent wants to knowingly subject their child to any harmful substances. For a brand that has built it's reputation on trust for the last 100 years, what needs to be apparent is their committment to consumers and not just their bottom line.

Hair Raising Critics Comb Out The Mane of Mitt Romney

Here at Pierce Mattie, we certainly love a good head of hair when we see it. And we're also no stranger to only stepping foot into talking politics when it comes to personal care and fashion of the candidates. We did it for both the previous Presidential and Vice Presidential debates and we honestly can't pass up remarking on Mitt Romney's hair. Because you've gotta love a candidate who puts a serious investment into his locks.

Our hair says a lot about us-- we all regularly size people up by the way they style their hair. I recall when I had very long hair to my waist someone remarked that I looked matronly. Matronly was not the image I wanted to present, so I chopped my hair to shoulder length...suddenly I presented as youthful. It appears Romney wants his hair to present an image as well, one that fits with his campaign: committed, conservative, clean cut, loyal and knowledgeable.

Presidential candidates don't want to take the focus off their message by changing up how they physically look (well for one because we all know the stress of being President changes that for you. I.e. Obama and grey hair.) Pundants will quickly analyze what it could mean (when it really may just be a simple hair cut) and it could throw your campaign in a tail spin. Our nation is honestly that obsessed with physical appearance (and Jenny and NutriSystem quietly rejoice) that we place value on how someone looks rather than how they can fix this country.

But I digress...What I love about Mitt Romney's hair other than the splashes of grey at the temples, is that he has been using the same hairstylist for the last 20 years, Leon de Magistris. Now, you want some dirt on this candidate? Ask his hairstylist. Because if Romney is like the rest of us, he's using Mr. de Magistris as a counselor.

Pierce Mattie's Beauty Public Relations: Ponytail Trend of 2012--From Messy to Sleek With Pravana Hair Care

Thought ponytails were long-gone and departed? Only for toddlers and yoga class? Not precisely. Create something ordinary with those lustrous locks of yours.

Keep it simple, timely, and classy with this effortless updo.  Yes ladies, the ponytail trend is back…or continues to remain admired.  The high ponytail isn’t only being rocked on the runway this season.  It seems to harmonize well with a tasteful Valentino evening dress and pair of patent leather Louboutins.

Ponytail No.1 Seeking sleek? Achieve this smooth look with Pravana’s Relax Straightening Cream. First, straighten the entire head of hair with this cream to get that smooth finish you desire.  Then, finish off the sleek elegant ponytail by applying Pravana’s Finish Rock Hard Mist to scalp portion the head, followed by a comb-through.   This graceful and chic pony will have heads turning…literally, in yearning for a similar look.

Ponytail No. 2 Not into tight, sleek updos?  Prefer something more casual, maybe even messy?  Then my suggestion is to sport a low ponytail for a more relaxed, informal look.  Don’t stop here, create that natural, beach-hair look by applying Pravana’s Curves Curl Enhancer.  Define your natural wavy or curly hair while adding a light bounce with this particular product.

Want these looks to last?  Sustain your 'do with Pravana’s Super Shape Hair Spray, applying to wherever you desire no folicle movement.  I recommend spraying closer to the roots for Pony No. 1 and closer to your ends for Pony No. 2 in order to keep your roots and all hair prior to the tie, looking soft and loose against the frame of your face.  This long-lasting, lightweight spray assists in keeping either that lady of luxury…or lady of leisure look you crave.

What do you think about ponytails?  Would you or do you wear them?  Which style of pony do you prefer? Twet us @PierceMattiePR.

Celebrity Beauty Marketing: Denise Richards Hair Care

When the careers of actors, actresses and athletes all die down…what’s next for them?  A line of products to launch themselves as a brand. It may seem cliché, but hey…it still works.

Ex-wife of disreputable (and sometimes winning) actor, Charlie Sheen, hard-hitting Denise Richards has not permitted her divorce to halt her passions.  This 40-year-old beauty (Really? She honestly looks amazing for 40!) has partnered with stylist Christophe to craft a new beauty line tagged Denise Richards Volume Extend

With products such as these: the LC Lauren Conrad line sold at Khol’s or the Kardashian Kollection sold at Sears (epic fail post fake-marriage) , there are two things the celeb inventor tends to keep in mind: 1) Include the name of the celebrity icon as part of the title for branding. And  2) Market and sell your product mass market at an affordable price, leaving your target market more broad, rather than just to your upscale luxury shoppers.

Richards’ Volume line will contain shampoo, conditioner, and other styling products also intended to protect the hair from styling tools and to prevent further damage.  The hair care line has been announced to launch this month.

Would you use Denise Richards’ Hair Care Products? Let us Know @PierceMattiePR.

Men's Hair Care: Mitch by Paul Mitchell

More and more often men’s grooming is moving from a fashion trend to commonplace. Over grown beards are being tamed into styled looks or clean shaven faces and out of control locks are even getting a little more controlled (although not too controlled). These clean cut gentleman looks don’t just come naturally. Believe it or not, it takes some thought and a little bit of effort to be looking your best. To help achieve whatever kind of look you are going for Paul Mitchell released Mitch in 2011. Mitch is a full line of men’s grooming products that will have you looking your best in no time.

Step One: get your hair really clean with Mitch Double-Hitter. It is a 2 in 1 shampoo that washes and conditions in one step to save you time and money, but leaves you with healthy hair.

Step Two: Make sure you are trimmed up and clean-cut with the Mitch Trimmer. The exclusive trimmer is great for last minute adjustments (not to mention makes it look like you can take care of yourself.)

Step Three: Pick your poison. Mitch has a wide range of style gels, Construction Paste, Hardwired and Steady Grip range from moderate to firm hold. You are going to find something that suits you. If you want to change it up everyday then get several different kinds to try out.  Mitch also offers several styling pomades for clean, natural looks.

For more information and to find the look that is right for you take a look at Mitch’s interactive website.

Men's Skin Care: Being Well Groomed Made Easy With Men-U

The truth is most men want to look good, (and if you don’t you might want to consider a few things) but they don’t want it to be a hassle. They just want to keep it simple. It is not something they want to have to think about too hard or waste too much brainpower on. Just like anything else they want to do it and go. Men-U has kept all of this in mind and has developed an arsenal of products to keep a man looking his best, not too mention making it as easy as possible for him.

It is an ages old discussion but there is no denying that men are different than women. When a man shaves daily he is taking off nearly two layers of skin, of course he needs a moisturizer. He doesn’t need the same moisturizer his wife uses however. Men-U has developed ultra concentrated products specifically designed for a man. Products include shaving kits, skin care and hair care each designed for men. What is all the talk about “ultra concentrated”?

The ultra concentrated products allow for top performance and a large number of applications. This is the part where Men-U has made it so men don’t have to think about it. All the products are made with a locking pump which is great for two reasons. You can travel anywhere with it and not worry about spilling and the pump delivers the perfect amount of product for the job. If used correctly the shaving product will last six months before it has to be replaced saving you time and money. Almost seems too easy doesn’t it?

Hair Tinsel are the New Highlights

From Beyonce to Jennifer Love Hewitt, celebrities have been showcasing a new hair trend that has been picking up speed as it is an easy and inexpensive way to add some sparkle to your locks. We're not talking Keratin treatments, but hair tinsel by way of a company called Hair Dazzle. Have you heard of it?

Hair Dazzle are thin strands of sparkle that tie in easily to your hair, don't require glue or heat and can be styled like normal hair (washing and heat styling.) The tinsel lasts up to 3 weeks and come in a variety of colors meant to add shimmer to your hair or to add contrast to the highlights you do have. With consumers still holding tightly to their wallets, Hair Dazzle may just be the new highlights this summer. This hair accessory is found in 300K salons across the US and I'm sure we're going to see more hair bling as we get into the warmer months.

Hair Care: Louise Galvin Colour Remover

We've all seen a plethora of commercials and ads pertaining to hair color. From coloring your roots, to getting the perfect color, to covering your grays and getting those summer highlights...but rarely do we ever hear about what to do when hair coloring goes wrong. It's happened to me, and believe me, it is not a pretty sight (my light brown hair turned BLACK.)

I stumbled across a great hair color remover that everyone is raving about: Louise Galvin Colour Remover. Based out of the UK, Louise Galvin is one of the top colorists and her product line is a carbon neutral beauty brand. Loved the idea of being able to correct hair color mistakes by using this 3-part system that won't cause any damage to your hair.

So if you are hiding your head in a paper bag because you realized you can't go from dark brown to blonde in one stint, you over-processed your color or are just unhappy with the results...there is hope to venture out into the world again using Colour Remover.
