American Academy of Dermatology to Phase Out AAD SEAL OF RECOGNITION

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has decided to phase out its AAD SEAL OF RECOGNITION(R) program over the next two years, and will cease accepting new applications effective immediately. Products which were accepted into the program prior to November 15, 2009, will continue to carry the AAD SEAL OF RECOGNITION(R) until the end of their two-year terms.

"With the expectation that the FDA will soon be issuing a sunscreen monograph that will likely be aligned with the stringent criteria of the AAD SEAL OF RECOGNITION(R) program, the Board of Directors determined that the need for the program would be diminished and decided to phase out the program," said dermatologist David M. Pariser, M.D., president of the American Academy of Dermatology.

"While reaffirming its recognition of the sun-protection benefits of the products currently in the program, the Board agreed that the Academy's resources now should be focused on enhancing its other public education efforts to increase awareness of the dangers of excessive sun exposure and to encourage positive behavior change with respect to sun protection," Dr. Pariser said.

The objectives of the AAD SEAL OF RECOGNITION(R) program are to help educate the public about the dangers of sun exposure and help decrease the incidence of skin cancer by giving the public a reliable method to make an informed decision when choosing sun-protection products.

The data were presented at the Skin Disease Education Foundation's 34th Annual "Hawaii Dermatology Seminar" in Waikoloa, Hawaii February 14-19th.

All study patients will complete a final in-office visit at 60-months.

"The dermatology community continues to rally in support of Artefill and we believe that will only intensify as we report more supportive data from this long-term study," said Niv Caviar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Suneva Medical. Skin Care & Beauty PR: Collagenna Business Model and Chilean Update

Hard to Treat Diseases (HTDS; http://www.htdsmedical.com/) Further to the previously announced cosmetics merger (press release Feb 25, 2010) between Melem Secret's and Collagenna Skin Care Products, the company is providing an update as to how the 2 business models will operate.

Collagenna Skin Care Products Inc will take over the management of Melem's Secret and will look after all of the aspects of this company including product development.

Collagenna's CEO Michael Arnkvarn states: "Collagenna has not been very active in online direct sales as our main focus has been developing relationships with Professional Skin Care Clinics. It is our intention to become very active in the huge US retail market and Melem's Secret will gradually become the main vehicle for online retail sales. The product mix between the two companies will be similar but not identical. Collagenna will continue to service and develop its existing client base. We will update our shareholders of our activities as they develop."

Melem Secret's website, www.melemsecret.com, has been recently updated. A fully functional online store will be functional in the next several weeks. Collagenna, now part of HTDS, reminds its followers that products can be purchased online at Collagenna Skin Care Products web site as well at www.collagenna.com.

Dermatology PR: COPPERTONE Solar Research Center Unveils Studies on Efficacy of Topical Antioxidants in Sunscreens at 2010 Annual Meeting of The American Academy of Dermatology

Schering-Plough HealthCare Products, Inc., the consumer healthcare division of Merck & Co., Inc., the makers of COPPERTONE, announced today at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology the results of studies demonstrating the efficacy of topical antioxidants in broad spectrum sunscreens.

An ex vivo study conducted by an independent researcher for the COPPERTONE® Solar Research Center revealed that using certain antioxidants in sunscreens reduced the formation of damaging free radicals by 74% in skin's outer layers exposed to UV.  This provides significant evidence that sunscreen products containing certain antioxidants can help fortify skin's natural defenses. The implications of this research are especially pertinent to those whose skin may be more vulnerable to the effects of sun exposure due to outdoor exercise activities.

Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Protection Month Marketing and PR

Did you know that May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Protection month? When I was 6 my aunt was diagnosed with Melanoma at the age of 29 and passed away 3 months later. Both my grandfather and uncle have had various skin cancers, and due to early detection, were successfully treated. Pierce Mattie has long been an advocate for skin cancer detection, prevention and protection, as he too has battled this disease and has been very vocal about it. The use of SPF in your moisturizer as well as monitoring changes in your skin are key to not only preventing various skin cancers, but to quickly identify it if it does happen to you.

Here are some great facial moisturizers with SPF 15-30 to consider:

And for men's skin care:

Please make sure you are using SPF on your face daily, not just when you hit the beach!

Skin Health PR: American Academy of Dermatology Issues Updated Position Statement on Vitamin D

The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) has updated its position statement on vitamin D based on the results of a review of the increasing body of scientific literature on this vitamin and its importance for optimal health recently conducted by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM).

The Academy continues to recommend that the public obtain vitamin D from a healthy diet that includes food naturally rich in vitamin D, foods and beverages fortified with vitamin D, and/or dietary supplements. The Academy reaffirmed its position that vitamin D should not be obtained from unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devices, as UV radiation is a known risk factor for the development of skin cancer.

The IOM reviewed the scientific literature examining the possible relationship between vitamin D and certain types of cancers, neurologic disease, infectious disease, autoimmune disease and cardiovascular disease. Based on review of more than 1,000 studies and expert and stakeholder testimony, the IOM concluded that while the evidence for associating vitamin D levels with bone health was strong, the evidence for other conditions was inconsistent, inconclusive and insufficient to inform nutritional requirements.

In an important milestone for the Women's Dermatologic Society (WDS) and its award-winning skin cancer prevention and sun safety campaign, Play Safe in the Sun, Greater St. Louis volunteers reached out to the breast cancer awareness community for the first time since the outreach began in 2004 by participating in the downtown's recent Susan G. Cosmetic Dermatology Marketed at FIX Malibu

Depending on where you live the winter months can be mild (Los Angeles, CA), harsh (Chicago, IL), or somewhat enjoyable (Charelston, SC).  Regardless, the change in season can do damage to the skin that we have done everything possible to keep radiant and beautiful.  Wearing more clothing prevents skin from breathing; harsh winds dry out the skin and lips; and people tend to forget to put on sunscreen during the winter months when it is needed most.

If you feel like your skin is less than radiant, don’t worry there is a fix. FIX Malibu that is. Created by cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Rebecca Giles, FIX carries anti-aging, exfoliants and facial skin care products, and total skin care packages. And if you feel like you want someone else to take care of your skin for a while they carry a full menu of relaxing and rejuvenating facials, neck and chest treatments, peels and microdermabrasion treatments. Not to mention, they have group treatments that are fit for a group of girlfriends! These packages include everything from massages, manicures and pedicures, makeup application, hairstyling, and lunch. You and your friends will leave FIX that day and feel like celebrities.

Walk into FIX Malibu and it is promised you will leave feeling satisfied, fresh and ready to take on the world. Angela, the lead aesthetician, and the rest of the FIX team cares about each and every client and adjusts each skincare technique to fit the needs of the individual’s skin, as no skin type is identical. Norbert, the massage therapist, will ensure that you leave feel relaxed after a session with his magical hands.

Facials will run a client around $100 and will not need to fret about small, but frustrating, add-ons. More specific treatments will cost a client anywhere between $150 and $200. FIX also sells facial products individually and has a complete collection kit for $300 or smaller kits for $70.

If you’re ready to give your skin a fresh and new look give FIX Malibu a call and do your skin a favor. What’s your favorite skincare treatment? Let us know @PierceMattiePR
