Beauty Pro says NO to Skin Whitener Cosmetics

sk-II_Banned_Sacks.gif

Are you like me - a guy on the go who never has time for the sun but longs for the lust look that has been kissed by the UV? If I go three days without the rays I swear I turn blue. I have always admired Hong Kong's beauty obsession with porcelain skin. Do you think that trend will ever hit the USA? I hope so, then my self tanning expenses wouldn't be so high. But will American's put Mercury on their face to inhibit the skin from getting darker? According to a recent study in China SK-II the brand owned by Procter & Gamble says yes. Now that Reuters has released this story on SK-II the prestige line at Saks Fifth Avenue that competes with Cle de Peau, Natura Bisse and will need to do some serious beauty PR damage control in the USA if this leaks.

I am thinking "NO MERCURY" stickers like "NO MSG" when I go for lunch on the side of the bottles, yes? (kidding)

Liza Ng, a public relations executive living in Hong Kong, has no time or inclination to cultivate the sporty, tanned look either. "I love to be pearly white because that is more beautiful," the 38-year-old said. Ng is not alone.

Women across Asia pay exorbitant prices for cosmetics that promise to whiten their skin and give them a fair, frail look which for centuries has been considered a sign of beauty in women in China and across much of the region.

But the demand for skin-whitening cosmetics -- which can cost as much as $385 for a 50-ml bottle -- has more than a monetary cost. Health experts say that mercury -- a potentially deadly substance that helps to keep skin white -- has been found in a number of skin-whitening cosmetics.

"In Hong Kong, there are no strict rules for product labeling and you can buy cream that says it is mercury-free, but when we examine it, it is full of mercury," said Christopher Lam, a professor of chemical pathology at the Chinese University.

Skin Care Tips for This Winter

Today while walking around Manhattan it was easy to notice the 50 degree weather. My skin felt dry and was starting to flake. When I store away my summer shorts and t-shirts I always put my gel creams and foaming face washes in a box also. It's time for cream cleansers and layering serums with night creams. Ahhh how I dislike cold weather.

The winter months can be a nasty time of year for your skin. Unfreeze your skins potential with these skincare suggestions.

Just when your skin was finished recovering from the blazing summer damage (or perhaps its still working on it!) the fall and winter months hit us with all new skin care drama. A lot of people dont realize the simple truth that wearing a quality SPF is important year round, not just when the sun is shining. Snow can reflect the sun and cause burns, while cloudy days should never be taken as a free day from the suns damaging rays.

However, winter skincare goes beyond the typical SPF lecture. There are a lot of other things that you can do to keep your skin care up to date and ready for anything!

Don't Breakout from Halloween Makeup This October - MAC Cosmetics

mac%20cosmetics.jpg
Dark Desire by Paris M. for MAC Cosmetics

It's October and the skeletons and pumpkins are hanging out in the store windows, reminding you that Halloween is just around the corner. With costumes, makeup, and candy galore, it is tempting to lose sight of your regular skincare routine on this fun holiday. But it's important to realize the effects that even one night can have on your skin.

If you are considering turning yourself green, purple, or orange this Halloween, remember that the makeup items you buy aren't made with the same formulations as many of the skin care products you would wear on a regular day basis. A lot of the face paints out there are grease-based, which can cause a multitude of skincare issues for anyone who has acne-prone skin. Try to choose oil free products whenever possible, and also alcohol-free products for anyone who has sensitive skin. Water-based makeup will always be your best bet and won't put a major roadblock in your regular skincare regime.

If you're too busy to make an appointment at a day spa or can't spare the cost for skin care treats such as facials, read on to see how a few key organic ingredients and homemade recipes can help you become a do-it-yourself skin care specialist.

Clarins Cosmetics is Going Organic

I knew the day would come when one of the top 5; Lauder, L'Oreal, etc. would jump on the organic band wagon. Clarins steps in organic cosmetics. French cosmetics maker Clarins has concluded an agreement with organic cosmetics producer Kibio for the joint development of a line of natural organic cosmetics. Under the terms of this agreement, Clarins acquires a 10% stake in Kibio SAS and subscribes to the full amount of a convertible bond issue. The total investment is EUR 3 million. The conversion of the bonds which will be possible starting in 2008 will enable Clarins to increase its shareholding in Kibio to 60%.

Kibio, created in 2005 by Pierre Cabane and Laurent Potier, has developed a line of organic products certified by Ecocert.

Currently in the initial commercial development phase, Kibio products are mainly distributed through direct sales using the method of home demonstrations. The products are also available for sale at the brand's website: www.kibio.com

What do you use on your face? Skingenic!

I was grabbing my usual morning cup of java the other day at my favorite local café in LA when a lady and her teenage daughter stopped me in my tracks and demanded to know what I use on my skin. Caught off guard by the beauty inquisition from the mother/daughter duo, a flashback of my bathroom medicine cabinet quickly came to me and I immediately blurted the word, “Skingenic!”

I Have Lost My Collagen

Collagen, that vast network of structural scaffolding that lies just beneath the surface of the skin, is responsible for the skin’s strength, durability and the smooth, plump look of youth. As we get older, collagen production naturally slows down and the skin loses its structure. Wrinkles appear and anti-aging products start flying off the shelves and into your bathroom. However, natural skin care basics and a few simple tricks can prevent collagen loss and even synthesize its production.

Collagen is created by a type of cell known as fibroblasts which reside in the layer just under the skin’s surface. These cells also produce elastin, the protein which gives our skin its bounce. The production of collagen is vital for health internally as well as it supports tissues and internal organs and helps them connect to the bones. In fact, it not only gives our skin its shape, it basically holds the entire body together.

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant and a basic in natural skin care, is a vital co-factor in the production of collagen. Without adequate Vitamin C, fibroblasts cannot do their job. Lack of Vitamin C is therefore one of the major causes of collagen breakdown and lack of production.

The other major elements that prevent collagen production are lack of moisture, exposure to UV rays and a high level of free radicals. While it is well known that each of these is vital in natural skin care, you may not have known that collagen production slows down without them.

The remedies should be pretty obvious now that you know the cause.

~ Supplement your diet with high quality, natural Vitamin C and other antioxidants.
~ Practice good dry skin care basics and avoid anything that will cause your skin to lose moisture. Natural skin care products that do not contain harsh chemical cleansers and lotions will help accomplish that. You should also use a shielding lotion – it bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a protective layer that locks in moisture and keeps out chemicals and other irritants.

~ Wear sunscreen. Again, find natural products, not those heavily laden with drying chemicals.
~ If you’re a smoker, consider quitting. It will improve your skin, your overall health and save money.

Following the few natural skin care guidelines above will help prevent collagen loss and may even restore some of that youthful glow!

Is 50 Really the New 30?

Is 50 really the new 30? Well other than some achy joints and some of the unwanted symptoms of peri-menopause. I say, "yes," it can be indeed, at least as far as fine lines and wrinkles go. Skin care is no longer just cosmetic or superficial. It's science, and if you purchase the right skincare products, they work!

Cosmeceutical skin care creams with ingredients such as glycolic acid and vitamin C, work and they work very well. The days of just lathering your face up with moisturizer to plump up the outer layers of the skin are gone. Today pharmaceutical or physician strength ingredients can now penetrate the skin and work from the deeper layers of the skin. Additionally, when these regimens are supplemented with oral vitamins and proper nutrition your skin will look even younger and fresher.

Many physician strength lines such as Murad, Dr. Brandt, and Dr. Perricone are adding nutritional supplements (everything from the omega-3 fatty acids which are excellent inflammation fighters to the amazing anti-aging properties of antioxidants) to their already tried and true skincare lines. These cosmeceutical companies are realizing that to achieve that youthful look we can no longer just apply skincare products topically; we need to nourish our skin cells from the inside out. Another excellent and mandatory way of keeping your skin looking 30 instead of 50 is by staying well hydrated. Dr. Perricone recommends drinking 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water per day and avoiding coffee, instead opting for green tea.

When adding proper nutrition to your new skincare regimen be sure to choose plenty of the best sources of foods rich in anti-age fighting value. According to New Beauty Magazine, dried berries such as blueberries possess anti-wrinkle properties and orange vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and pumpkin are rich in fiber and iron and essential for postmenopausal women.

With proper nutrition and the new science in skincare you can say goodbye to 50 and hello to 30!

Top 10 Beauty Myths: Busted

Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is good for your complexion.

False. In general, people do not need to drink 8 glasses of water a day for any health benefits. It's good as an appetite suppressant and obviously to keep yourself from dehydration, but water alone won't help your complexion. That is based on a combination of genetics, healthy eating habits, managing stress and taking care of your skin with a good
skincare routine.

Cutting your hair will make it grow faster.

False. Hair grows a half inch every month regardless of it being cut or not. It does tend to grow faster in the summer than winter. Hormones play a factor as well, as most pregnant moms know that their hair will grow faster during pregnancy.

There's no need to slap on the sunscreen when it's an overcast day.

False. Clouds or not, UV rays can still penetrate your skin. You should always wear sunscreen when heading outdoors in the spring and summer. In the fall and winter when you are all covered up, you should be wearing a moisturizer and/or foundation with an SPF--and don't forget SPF for your lipcare either!

Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker.

False. Your hair may appear thicker, but it is only because of the angle you cut it at.

Drinking coffee, eating chocolate and greasy foods causes acne.

False. While some of these foods can make acne worse, it is not the cause of it. Acne is a hormonal issue.

Eggs and Mayonnaise are good conditioners for your hair.

False. First, I can't even imagine putting eggs and mayonnaise in my hair just for the smell factor alone. If you want well moisturized, soft tresses, stick to the conditioners you can find in the beauty aisle.

Toothpaste gets rid of zits.

False. Toothpaste will dry out your skin, but it certainly won't rid your skin of acne.

Hair care products can repair split ends.

False. Split ends can be temporarily "glued" back together with hair products, but once the product is washed out, the split ends return. The only way to fix a split end, is to cut it off.

You should stick to one product line for your beauty products.

False. All I ask is why? Nothing bad will happen if you mix and match products, in fact I do it all the time because I love a concealer by one company and love an eyeshadow by another. The same goes for hair care products and skin care. Mix it up!

Dry skin causes wrinkles.

False. Wrinkles are caused by internal and external factors including sun damage. Fine lines are also caused by repetitive smiling and frowning, etc.

Tweezing Tips for Perfect Eyebrows

Tweezing your eyebrows can be a tricky thing. If you overpluck, it will take a week or so for those hairs to grow back. If you underpluck, then you risk looking like a bushy mess. Here are some tips to achieving the Model Eyeybrow look:

1. Everyone understands where the eyebrow starts, but not where it ends. Line up a pencil at the end of the nose, towards the corner of the eye. That's where the line of your eyebrow should end. This is also where your eye shadow should end, as well.

2. Balance to the eyebrows are very important. You want to make sure that they're not uneven. From where it starts to where it ends, the line of the eyebrow should be horizontal. If you line up a pencil at the beginning and the end of the brow lines up too high, you know you've tweezed too much.

3. The Model Eyebrow is a shape that looks great on everyone. From the start of the eyebrow to the arch, the line is straight. From the arch to the end of the eyebrow, the line is softly curved. It's a classic eyebrow shape that's always in and looks great on everyone.

4. Avoid creating a straightness in your eyebrows by not tweezing above the eyebrow. By tweezing on top, you tend to flatten the shape, making it very difficult to create a high flowing arch. You get your arch only by tweezing underneath, never on top.

5. If you are getting that pinching ouch when tweezing, do what the pros do. Grab the hair with tweezers and pull the hair with the tips of the tweezer touching the skin as you pull. Pull in the direction that the hair grows, and you'll find tweezing to be virtually painless. Why? It's the pulling up of the skin that hurts, not the hair. By keeping the skin flat, you eliminate much of the sting factor.

6. If you find yourself breaking out after tweezing your eyebrows, keep it sanitized. Use witch hazel on a cotton ball before and after you tweeze to avoid those little red bumps.

7. Ideally, the best shape is the natural line that your eyebrow already is. If your eyebrows are extremely thick, a very thin eyebrow will not work for you. If your eyebrows are thin, trying to maintain a thicker eyebrow will be too much work. Just as in hair texture, work with what you have. Softer facial features enhance a thinner, more elegant eyebrow, while a strong bone structure is the perfect face for a thicker, stronger eyebrow.

8. The secret to model eyebrows, is to never completely wax your eyebrow. Models know that eyebrow looks come and go, and if you wax only, you lose the ability to grow in your eyebrows at a later date should you want to change your look. The best technique is to just wax the hairs that are not needed and tweeze to define the shape of the eyebrow.

There are several shapes to tweezers, but the most used are:

The thin tip: Good for grasping fine hairs and plucking ingrown hairs.
The slanted tip: This tip gives you maximum control.
The square tip: Removes coarse hairs or several hairs at a time.

I personally use Esthetic Plus' Slanted Tweezers and find that they work fabulous on my brows. You can learn more about them through my review of them on my blog or simply visit their website at www.estheticplus.com.

Product Review: Korres Body Butters Trio

korresbodybutterstrio.jpg

I received the Korres Body Butters Trio and it couldn’t have come at a better time. With winter actually beginning to set in, my skin starts to get so dry and I know that Shea Butter is a fantastic deeply moisturizing lotion.

Korres Body Butter is mineral oil, silicone, propylene glycol and ethanolamine free. The butters glide on smooth with no greasy residue. The trio comes in Guava, a tropical sweet scent; Quince, a fruity & spicy scent; and Yoghurt, a baby pure fresh scent. If I had to pick a favorite scent of the three, it would be Yoghurt because it is so fresh out of the shower clean smelling. Besides Shea Butter, all of the butters contain Sunflower, Almond and Avocado oils, which nourish the skin and restore its elasticity and smoothness.

Some of the benefits of Shea Butter are
:

* Helps cell regeneration and capillary circulation. This favors the healing of small wounds, skin cracks and crevices, and skin ulcers. In the cosmetic field, this property is an asset against skin aging. It has restructuring effects on the epidermis, also on dry and fragile hair.

* Due to it’s natural high content of fats, fatty acids, vitamins A, E and F) and other active ingredients; it’s no wonder it has been used for centuries for skin care.

* Shea is used to moisturize severely dry skin. It heals and smoothes itchy dry skin, as well. It has an anti-elastase characteristic that makes it an excellent product to prevent and reduce wrinkles. It aids in the healing of stretch marks and helps heal and restore elasticity to the skin of burn victims. Shea Butter helps control eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and skin discoloration; it helps heal bedsores on bedridden individuals.

The color Elke gave me was Effet noir miroir, which is a nice kohl black. Actually I find that it also has pigments of purple in it, which is one reason I really like this eyeliner. Last week when e.l.f. was having their lip product sale, I decided to scoop up their Hypershine Gloss. I purchased mine in Candy Apple and Flirt, but honestly, the color makes no difference as this is a practically sheer gloss. The gloss resembled a mechanical paintbrush-pen of sorts, because the gloss is up in a chamber and you need to twist the pen to bring it down to the area where it trickles the gloss down into the paint brush-like bristle tip. The pen says to twist it several times, twelve I believe, however it took a lot more twisting than that. I had to twist my gloss pen 32 times until the gloss came into the bristles...Read more.

Body & Skin Care: The Benefits Of Exfoliating

kissmyfacesugarreef.jpg

Many times it doesn't matter how much lotion you are slapping on your skin, if you are not exfoliating your skin on a regular basis, your skin cannot absorb all the benefits your moisturizer has to offer. This is due to your pores being clogged by the dead skin cells your skin has shed. Clogged pores makes your skin look dry and dehydrated...you know that flaky skin look? That look is never "in."

kissmyfacescrub.jpg

Besides the normal places to exfoliate like your face, legs and arms; have you remembered to exfoliate your neck? Exfoliating your neck is often ignored. If you exfoliate your neck, it will give you a fresher look. What about your elbows and knees? I remember all too well what it felt like to have cracked, flaky elbows. It hurt to have dry skin in this area. Knees need to look polished too. You could be wearing that killer red dress, but when your dry knees peak out, it completely takes away from how gorgeous you look. What about your feet? Have you looked at your heels lately? This is something that needs to be taken care of daily, as dry cracked heels look pretty on no one. Also, exfoliating your feet before applying sunless tanning lotion helps prevent streaking. What about your lips? You can't have a great pucker if they are scaley and peeling.

Some of the benefits of exfoliating are:

* It's ability to improve texture of your dull skin, making it more vibriant.
* Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
* Sloughs off the dead skin cells your body has shed.
* Unclogs pores.
* Keeps skin healthy, thus helping to prevent break-outs.
* Helps retain your tan when you exfoliate before slapping on the sunscreen.

You will notice a tremendous difference in your skin's softness and moisture retention if you simply follow a routine of exfoliating one to two times per week.

Beautiful Lips: Makeup Tips For Long Lasting Color, Matte & Fuller Looking Lips

We're always looking for a way to make our lip color last the entire day, to make our lips look fuller without the burning and stinging of lip plumpers or how to get that great matte look. I was able to tap into the expertise of my Makeup Artist friend Elke von Freudenberg for a few tricks on just how to accomplish the above.

A way to keep lipstick on all day is to avoid lipstick all together. First, apply a "lip-friendly" colored eye shadow on dry lips with an flat eye shadow brush.

Next apply your favorite lip gloss in clear or a colored gloss to create a custom color. The eye shadow powder gives the gloss something to stick too and lasts hours longer than gloss by itself.

The Finished Lip

For a trick that works just as well in real life as it does in front of the camera, try this tip to make small lips appear fuller. Apply a concealer pencil, or concealer with a brush around the outside line of the lip and blend well. The lightness makes lips appear fuller and more prominent.

Need to change a lipstick or gloss fast? Take a Q-tip spritzed with water or toner and roll off the lipstick. Make sure you roll from the outside corners of the mouth inwards. This trick works great when lipstick color changes must be done fast.

To create the perfect lip line, take concealer on a pointed concealer brush and lightly trace around the lip after you've applied lipstick. This creates a perfect line to the lipstick and gives a sharper edge.

The matte lip is back, but with a softer feel. To create this look easily, apply a favorite lip color. Separate a Kleenex so it's 1-ply and place over the lips. With a small eye shadow or fluff brush, lightly apply a loose neutral or translucent powder through the Kleenex. The right amount of powder will go through to create a soft matte mouth without the dry look and feel.

Botox vs. Fillers: How To Choose The Best One For You

Dr. Stuart Kaplan, one of the nation's leading dermatologists and the creative mind behind the skincare line KaplanMD, recently wrote an article to distinguish the difference between Botox, a muscle relaxer, and dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane. If you are not aware of the difference and how each product works, the article below is a good start to understand the difference between the two.

Botox vs. Fillers: How To Choose The Best One For You
By Stuart H. Kaplan, M.D. Beverly Hills Dermatologist

It is important to understand the difference between Botox, a muscle relaxer, and Juvederm, Restylane, Collagen, etc. which are fillers. The easiest way to visualize the difference is to think of a crease as a valley between two mountains. Botox prevents the mountains from being pushed together, and fillers fill in the valley.

Botox® Cosmetic: If someone has a crease that is apparent only when frowning or squinting, Botox should be all that is necessary. Botox is most often used on the forehead, crows feet, and frown lines. It can also be used to treat neck bands. (Its most recent FDA approval is for armpit sweating and sweaty hands. For these conditions, results can last 6 months or longer.) Botox works on creases in two ways. First, it weakens the muscles that cause the creases. Second, and even more important, as the muscles get weaker, the patient gets out of the habit of creasing and using those muscles. In this way, Botox actually prevents the progression and deepening of creases:

Before Botox®Cosmetic

After Botox®Cosmetic

Injectable Wrinkle Fillers: The differences between fillers has to do with thickness and longevity. In general, the thicker the filler, the better it will fill creases, but the greater the chance of possible bumps. Bumps are more likely in thinner skin such as the lower eyelids, and crows feet. Zyderm (a type of Collagen), and Restylane Fine Line are the least thick and can be used around the eyes, but they are also the shortest lasting. Juvederm Ultra Plus is one of the longer lasting hyaluronic acid fillers. It can be used for deeper creases. Juvederm Ultra Plus can last between 3 and 6 months.

Fillers can also be used to improve or enhance facial structures such as:

* Filling in acne scars
* Enhancing cheek bones to make them fuller and more defined
* Enlarging lips for a fuller, softer pout
* Correcting lip deformities or asymmetry
* Non-surgical nose-job to fill in dips and valleys in the nose bridge
* Filling in hollows under the eyes that contribute to dark circles

Before Restylane Injection

After Restylane Injection

Other new trends include:

* Nipple enhancement
* Vaginal rejuvenation
* Injecting into the soles of the feet to make wearing high heeled shoes more comfortable

Korres Lemon Anti-Shine Gel
4 out of 5 Stars
stars4.jpg
Always on the hunt for an anti-shine product that will last for hours on end, I received Korres Lemon Anti-Shine Gel to see if it could combat my oily t-zone. I’ve been applying the anti-shine gel as part of a step by step process in my facial routine, which have made my skincare issues turn around 360 degrees. I have been exclusively been using only Korres skin care products on my face and the results have been amazing...Read more.

Kiss My Face Tinted Moisturizer
5 out of 5 Stars
stars5.jpg
I love when I get to try a product I have never tried before. It really helps to come into a review without having any preconceived notions about how it should work. 1. I’ve never used a tinted moisturizer. 2. I’ve never used Kiss My Face. So it was a double whammy with Kiss My Face’s Tinted Moisturizer in Sisal, which is for light coverage. This moisturizer has an SPF of 8 and its oil and fragrance free. LOVE the oil free part because then it means less shine to contend with for my combination skin...Read more.

Lumiere Mineral Cosmetics

While I absolutely love every product I received, my most favorite has been the Lavender Pearl eyeshadow. Even my mother remarked on how gorgeous the color was and asked where she could get it. Lavender Pearl is a pinky lavender with an opal-like sheen. The picture on the site does not do it justice. It has an iridescent shimmer to it. This is the product I have been using to make my eyes really pop...Read more.

Kiss My Face 3 Way Color
4.5 out of 5 Stars

After trying Kiss My Face’s Tinted Moisturizer, I was intrigued to try out their 3 Way Color product. I received mine in Heather, which is a light frosted berry looking color. The 3 Way Color can be used on your lips, cheeks and eyes. Kiss My Face’s 3 Way Color has an SPF of 8 and is moisturizing with olive and mango butter. The scent is completely delicious and its a mix of pink grapefruit, pomegranate, rasberry and white grape...Read more.

Beauty Tips: The Ten Commandments Of Body Sugaring

I previously got to interview Greg Cartwright, Body Sugaring Expert and owner of Downtime Massage & Skincare. He recently wrote about the "ten commandments" of Body Sugaring and gave some great product recommendations along with it.

skinceuticalshydratingb5gel.jpg

1. Do not hang out all day in sweaty clothes.

2. Use a Loofah daily, preferably with Sundari's Neem and Manuka Antiseptic Body Wash.

3. Apply Prince Reigns to all sugared areas daily after showering.

4. When spending your summer tanning or outdoors, use an exfoliant once a week. Sundari Walnut and Cardamom scrub is stimulating and refreshing to sun kissed skin. This allows all moisturizers applied the ability to absorb and not sit on the surface of your skin. Also it allows the sugaring to happen, as the tanned skin cements hair in. **Benefit**- Bright radiant tan and perfect hair removal.

5. When addressing the Seasons, moisturize. Sundari Gotu Kola and Kukai Moisturizer is a winner; it lifts and firms skin and increases circulation. Always apply lotion after the body scrub, if you don't, eventually you will dry the skin out more. Gotu Kola is lifting and firming and helps counteract sun and age!

Blow Dry Your Way To Frizz-Free Hair

Don't let humidity get the best of you--I know how frustrating it can be to have perfectly good salon-looking hair suddenly frizz out on you. All you need are the right tools, products and good technique when it comes to creating picture perfect hair while combating the frizz.

hair_care.jpg

First, a great blow dryer is a must, preferably one with a nozzle for aiming the air directly in the desired location and angle you want it to dry your hair. The T3 Bespoke Labs Evolution Dryer uses tourmaline-infused ceramic components to emit maximum negative ionic and far infrared energy, which together eliminate frizz and drying time while creating sleek and shiny hair. It's nozzle directs airflow exactly where you want it and blows a concentrated amount of negative ions and far infrared heat onto large sections of hair.

Second, the right styling aids are a must. I interchangeably use Joico's K-Pak Smoothing Balm and Ojon's Daily Intensive Shine Treatment. Both add shine to your hair and both counteract frizz. You'll also want to make sure you are using the right brush. A round bristle brush will grab your hair and smooth it as you dry your hair root to tip.

When drying your hair, make sure that you only dry sections at a time; don't try to dry it all at once. Start by clipping th top half of your hair to the top of your head and blow dry the bottom half aiming your blow dryer straight down over your brush, but about 5cm away from your hair so that you don't burn it. Slowly brush through hair as you dry keeping the dryer nozzle aimed downwards while you continue to dry your hair, small sections at a time. If you have any flyaways or a small amount of frizz, spray your hairspray into your palms and smooth through your hair.

Have any additional hair care tips you want to add? Let us know in the comments!

Beauty Tips: The Perfect Brow

Score Beverly Hills Brows Without a Plane Ticket

Brow Envy [noun] \’brau en-ve\: to feel a strong desire to carbon copy the perfect arch of one other’s eyebrow in place your own lackluster formation of hair that happens to grow on your brow bone.

I recently had the sudden urge to makeover my brows and made it my job to become a brow expert.  I wasn’t as blessed as say, Brooke Sheilds, with a natural strong arch that just needs a simple clean up to frame the face beautifully so I needed the help of some filler products to achieve a better shape.

So what constitutes as the perfect arch anyways and how can we achieve it at home? I was determined to find out.  That’s when “definitive brow expert” Anastasia Soare came to my rescue.  Her brow shaping techniques have been practiced on the likes of Madonna and Penelope Cruz and praised in publications such as Vouge and W.  No, I wasn’t fortunate enough to subject my brow trouble to Anastasia’s personal care BUT I was able to score some of her products form her new line Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Her full range of products include just about anything imaginable to enhance your eyebrows.  Stencils, kits, tinted gels, serums—you name it, she has created it in the name of brow beauty.  I do have a tweezing problem so the catchy name of the “Tweezers Anonymous Kit” caught my eye right away.  Because I am already a loyal Tweezerman girl (sorry Anastasia, I’m sure your tweezers are fabulous too) I found the kit to be a perfect addition to my already acquired brow supplies. $55 got me her patented eyebrow serum, a double shaded brow filler, a mini duo brush, and shape correcting stencils all inside a super cute metallic quilted carrier.
 Anastasia Brow Kit

I took my kit home, complete with a 12 step Tweezers Anonymous program, and was eager to rejuvenate my brows to a fuller more "perfect" shape.  Starting with my stencils to be careful not to over-pluck, Anastasia already made a previously arduous task enjoyable for me.  On to the handy double tipped brush and my brows were already looking tamed and in place.  The final steps with the serum and the brow filler were as easy as the first making my brow makeover easier than the rest of my make up routine. I was left with results that even my friends noticed!

If you don’t feel confident enough to start your brow makeover at home then you needn’t book a flight to the Beverly Hills Anastasia Salon in order to reap the benefits of the Anastasia technique.  She has passed along her secrets to her certified technicians found all around the world.  Visit her site to find a location nearest you.

Beauty PR: Pakistan has become an Emerging Market for Men's Grooming Products

Pierce Mattie was recently interviewed by Cosmetique News in Paris about how men's grooming products in Pakistan are beginning to become more acceptable and opening an opportunity for growth. Below you will find the original interview that took place that I believe will shed some insight into this emerging market for beauty.

Courtney, Cosmetique News: I’ve read a few reports detailing how men’s beauty products and services do well in Pakistan, as the influence of global pop culture and an existing cultural acceptance toward men ‘adorning themselves’ for special occasions like weddings make even men’s makeup products acceptable there, despite the strong influence of Islam. What can you tell me about this market?

Pierce Mattie: Pakistan is currently experiencing a rapid growth rate annually higher than most Middle Eastern countries with their economy and commerce. It currently remains as the world’s sixth largest growth rate. Their two largest areas of growth are finance and manufacturing. Previously, Pakistan’s economy was primarily an agricultural base, but over the past ten years it has increased to being a service-based country. This mostly includes wholesale and retail with an increase in marketing and public relations, both of which are image related industries. The trend is going from men in the workforce who may have worked outside mostly during the week to ones that are now indoors, at a computer, taking meetings and attending social functions for lunch and dinner. Thus, their grooming demands have increased.

In 2006 Pakistan signed the Free Trade Agreement with China to increase its bilateral trade to other markets. This has caused the workforce again to become more competitive both in their appearance and business savvy skills. The men are taking on a more global esthetic than that typically centric to Pakistan. There is a huge influence coming from East India at this time with men’s fashion and grooming that is melting Pakistani trends with an Indian Asian inspiration. I also see a huge amount of lineage between Pakistan and France. The Fashion Institute of Pakistan has an equally male staff as it does to its female counterparts, something unique to the country’s leading fashion school, thus increasing the enrollment of men in the college as well.

Courtney, Cosmetique News: In your understanding, which products/channels are the most successful, and which have the most potential for growth?

Pierce Mattie: Close to half of Pakistan’s population is Punjabi, an Indo-Aryan ethnic group from South Asia. They continue to enjoy their spicy dishes at lunch, but realize that during meetings it’s best to have a neutral aroma. There is an increase in men splashing cologne after lunch with popular notes that neutralize food smells, as well as, increasing their shower rituals to both morning and night. Their music and dance of choice is a folk music called Bhangra and it’s known for being very colorful. Currently it’s being mixed into workout videos and used similarly to the way the US Fitness industry exploded with a Miami dance called Zumba. Pakistan features several of their videos with male instructors. Famous Punjabi men include; Hrithik Roshan, who is an award-winning Bollywood actor. A partnership with him would make for a great branding opportunity for a grooming brand to align with.

Skincare Review: Dermaquest

On a quest for perfect skin?

Dermaquest Skin Therapy came onto the high-tech skin care scene in 1999, but didn't have it's big debut until more recently. Don't be fooled by its sleek and fancy packaging that might lead you to believe it's just another line putting less than perfect products into attractive packaging--they are for real. I have had the opportunity to try a slew of their products and watch friends of mine do the same, so my raving is backed up with personal experience.

Their line encompasses a perfect balance of scientific research and an esthetician formulated product to create some of the most efficient products out there. They have become best known for their DermaLash product, a lash thickener featured on Rachael Ray as seen below:

Their skin care is what I am in love with.

For Acne sufferers, their Rejuvaderm is somewhat of a life saver. My friend and liscensed esthetician, Lauren Zebro, and I decided to put our stubborn acne prone faces up to the challenge and Dermaquest delivered. All the claims associated with the product were starting to be seen within two weeks. My skin has never felt so smooth and hydrated while staying so clear.  Zebro has had similar results and reccomends Dermaquest to all her NYC clients.

Their age management line is also totally buzzworthy with many results-driven (and proven) products. My favorite, Peptide Mobilizer, will set you back almost $200 for 1.5 fl oz., but it's worth every penny. A thin application of this product is like a mini session of Botox. It resurfaces and increases skin thickness while relaxing muscle contractions that cause the fine lines and wrinkles everyone is trying to prevent and/or combat.

A final product of Dermaquest's that I feel compelled to highlight that any skin type can benefit from, is the Glyco Creamy Cleanser. Skincare junkies united over this fabulous cleanser before my very eyes. I know one woman whose steadfast dedication to a particular cleanser for almost 6 years was terminated immediately upon trying this cleanser. The key to this cleanser are the deep cleansing agents without the drying of the skin. As we all know a great complexion is only achieved with the correct balance of hydration.

Our skin is our presentation to the world so it ought to be taken care of with the best of products in the best care. There are a lot of medi-spas that are carrying Dermaquest and have access to professional products otherwise unavailable to consumers. I recommend trying some of their products and/or find a spa that uses them in association with their treatments. I'd love to hear about anyone who already has taken the derma "quest."

Beauty Trends: Fall 2008

Facing the Fall 2008 Fashion Trends

With the non-official summer fashion cut-off finally arriving yesterday, it’s time to update your makeup routine to correspond with the new fall trends.  Naturally, I like to think my fall fashion trend picks from our Fashion Rag are also all encompassing of the hottest makeup trends this fall so I went ahead and found the best beauty looks to go with each trend.

Goth Glam:  This is not the Goth of the 90’s, so please get the hope out of your head that your dark red lipped and raccoon eye lined ways were making a comeback.  Instead, the 2008 brand of Goth calls for a simple sweep of pewter shaded shadow, a clean black lash line and a plum matte lip.  I like Duwop Gray Eyes Shadow Kit (I also LOVE their Reverse Eye Liner that will compliment the clean eye desired for this look by preventing smudging and running of the eyeliner) and Urban Decay makes a terrific lipstick in Apocalypse.

Duwop gray eyes

American Classic: This trend beckons for a fresh face—the natural “all American beauty” if you will.  To follow the clean lines of these fall offering, stick to enhancing your own beauty with minimal color and lots of attention to a luminous complexion.  Choose from peach colored glossy lips, pale blush and a simple eye that plays up natural lashes.  Fresh makes a Twilight Freshface Glow primer that achieves the desired radiant skin and Benefit’s Posie Tint doubles as the perfect cheek and lip color.
freshfaceposie tint
SoHo Boho: Since the look is all chic hippiedom, make sure you add the appropriate amount of drama with a smudged black liner and a prominent brow. I recommend the Anastasia Go Brow for brow shading and highlighting.  Balance the look with a muted lip. The addition of a lightly applied jewel toned shadow, like Shu Uemura in Me Yellow adds some color to this otherwise bleak palette.
go browshu uemera yellow shadow

Future Femme: This is where we get to have a little more fun with the creative opportunities this trend makes available. The colors are unexpected, the liner is exaggerated (think a lighter version of Amy Winehouse’s trademark cat eyes) and the lip is dark.  For eyes, first pick a color you wouldn’t normally wear.  Mine will be the bright pink and green hues found in the Laura Gellar Baked Marble Eye Shadow in Starburst. The pop out colors of the Sugar Cosmetics Round The Clock Eye Shadow Palette in Punch Out, rivaling Crayola, are perfect for this look.
laura gellarsugar cosmetics palette

Overall, bright luminous complexions, dark lips and shimmering bright eyes seem to be the prominent palette for fall 2008.  If you ever feel stuck on which shades to choose for which trend, check out the name of the hues available.  Marketers (for the most part) name shades appropriately so you should be able to link the trend up accordingly (i.e. Apocalypse is the lip shade I found for Goth Glam).

While I’ve never been one to enforce the no white shoe after Labor Day law, I will make a conscious effort to gradually shift towards the darker hues that fall beseeches us to incorporate into our every day looks in the coming weeks.

Skin Care 101: Night Moisturizers

Do you have a night moisturizer for your beauty regimen? Daily moisturizers have flooded the market with SPF ranging from 4-60, but what about moisturizing during the hours most crucial to rest and skin repair: night. Night moisturizers are usually heavier than daytime moisturizers and though both a.m. and p.m. moisturizers share the same potent anti-irritants and antioxidants in their formulas, daytime moisturizers typically have a sunscreen (SPF) ingredient and nighttime moisturizers tend to have more hydration formulas. There are many companies realizing the importance of nighttime skin care, here are a few suggestions:

10 Healthy Beauty Tips from Lavera's CEO, Ulrike Jacob-Dewor

At age 63, my mom to this day has perfect skin. Always a firm believer in sunscreen, she preached the wrinkle prevention benefits of lathering sunscreen whenever there was a potential sun threat during an outdoors outing. And growing up in an average household, well known sunscreen brands such as Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, and Banana Boat were my friends. However, it wasn’t until I started becoming more aware of natural skincare brands did I find out that conventional/synthetic sunscreen wasn’t necessarily good for me.

In fact, recently released scientific studies by Switzerland's Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology (conducted in 2001) prove a link between synthetic sunscreens and hormonal disturbances in the body. The chemical compounds in synthetic sunscreens have been found to accumulate in body fats and in breast milk, and, by mimicking the effects of estrogen, can induce undesirable hormonal changes. Eek I say!

On that note, I turn to our client and natural skin care expert Ulrike Jacob-Dewor of Lavera to explain how to protect yourself from the sun safely AND naturally. Ulrike Jacob-Dewor has a PhD in biochemistry, has worked as an environmental consultant and is a firm believer in organic and natural skin care. Here are her top 10 tips to ensure everyone enjoys this summer safely:

The Best Drugstore Beauty Products

Great Lash Mascara In general, most beauty products are luxury items; things you buy when you want to try something new or realized you've been using the same tube of mascara for half a year. In times like these, it's hard to justify spending money on beauty products. I can't seem to let myself buy that $25 mascara or the $50 eye cream anymore.

So lately, as I stroll the drugstore aisles, I've noticed products that I've never seen before. Not only that, the products that I've purchased work about as well as the products I spend up to five times as much on. So, which drugstore beauty products are the best for less?

Best Beauty Products With SPF

One of the most important things to protect is your skin. In the coming months you’re sure to be spending more time in the warm weather, and that’s why it is important to look for products that include SPF (although it is equally important to slap on the SPF regardless of season!) Your face, especially eyes and lips, can burn easily, and it is also important to keep this in mind as we age and in reducing sun damage as we get older.

Here are some great beauty products with SPF worth trying:

How To Achieve the Fall 2009 Hair Trends

Chanel HairstyleThis Paris Fashion Week, the accessory aspects of the shows, including hair and makeup were, defined ready-to-wear. Maybe this was to offset the truly not-ready-to-wearness of many of the clothes.

According to the designers from Paris Fashion Week, you have two hairstyle options for fall and they are polar opposites. Although there were some different styles displayed on the runway, there seemed to be competition going between two: super-slick updos and natural, flowy hair. While flipping through pictures of Fashion Week, almost every show featured these two styles. It was like the hair gods commissioned it. Seriously though, what I like is the simplicity of these hairstyles. They are uncomplicated and pretty ways for us common folk to wear our hair. So, will these trends be reflected off the runway?

Men's Grooming: A Great Shave That's Affordable

shaving-man.jpg.jpegWith the Art of Shaving opening four new stores across the United States, and one opening soon in Schaumburg, Illinois, it seems appropriate to weigh some of the best shaving products on the market. The Art of Shaving is known for their high-end, luxurious shaving products, including razors and various shaving products, though in times like these it may seem excessive to splurge on products like these. And while we love luxe shaving products, let's consider some alternatives as well.

Quick Beauty Fix's from L'Oreal to Clean and Clear to your Kitchen

Never would I have thought my kitchen held the answers to half of my beauty mishaps. Glamour magazine recently had a few sweet ideas to fix those dilemmas that would have me reaching into my fridge instead of my wallet that I thought were worth repeating.

Beer…for my hair? Talk about an alcoholic beverage going straight to your head. Apparently a post-shampoo, pre-conditioner secret to fixing frizzy hair is pouring a dark beer over your locks and letting it sit for about 2 minutes. If you’re willing to spend the extra bucks (or truthfully just want to save that six-pack for the BBQ) then L’Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free UV Spray works just as well to keep your hair hydrated on a hot day.

American Academy of Implant Dentistry Communications

Dental_Implant_section.jpg

For years, it was common practice for dentists to perform repeat root canals and other procedures to save teeth compromised by extensive decay, gum disease and bone loss. Today, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) said times have changed and patients should forego prolonged dental heroics to save failing teeth and replace them with long-lasting dental implants.

"There really is no justification for undergoing multiple endodontic or periodontic procedures, and enduring the pain and financial burden, to save a diseased tooth," said John Minichetti, DDS, speaking for the AAID. "The days are over for saving teeth till they fall out. Preserving questionable teeth is not the best option from both oral health and cosmetic perspectives."

Lifestyle Marketing: Going To Sleep w/ Bob Hickman of United Feather & Down w/ Neil A. Petrocelli of Borghese

nightcreammarketing.jpg

Bob Hickman, United Feather & Down's Senior Vice Present of Sales and Marketing, and Neil A. Petrocelli, Borghese, Inc.'s Vice President of Marketing, list their top sleep and beauty tips.

1. Aloe vera gel penetrates skin almost four times faster than water, and its super emollient qualities help it moisturize the under layers of skin. Aloe treated bedding is kind to your skin to help you awaken refreshed and rejuvenated.

2. Choose the right pillow to fit your sleep style. A quality pillow is constructed to fit either a side sleeper, back sleeper or stomach sleeper and the right pillow can make a world of difference for getting a satisfying and full night's rest.

3. Try to get to bed at the same time every night. This keeps your body in the proper rhythm to obtain a full, good night's rest. This is because humans have an inbuilt body clock called the circadian rhythm. Controlled by hypothalamus at the base of the brain, it governs the body's daily alternation between sleep and wakefulness.

4. Night cremes concentrate on repairing, refreshing and rejuvenating what was damaged during the day's exposure to sun, environmental factors and simple stress. They can help improve skin tone and color, reduce blemishes and hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Moisturizing creams rich in natural, soothing botanicals are gentler for your skin. Giving your self an "overnight facial" is a great way to wake up feeling refreshed and looking younger.

5. The area around your eyes doesn't contain oil-producing glands, so pay special attention to this sensitive area by gently applying a soothing, botanical eye cream to help prevent fine lines and dark circles.

Tina Lane, has been specializing in the placement of candidates in the Beauty Industry for over 10 years. She opened Tina Lane Personnel, Inc. in 1991, with a philosophy based on a one-to-one relationship between the company and the candidate. Tina Lane is a Madison Avenue Boutique Search Firm (conveniently located in the Grand Central area) specializing in the Beauty Industry. Tina Lane’s true passion is anything related to Cosmetics & Fragrance as they service all levels of placement in the Prestige and Mass arena.

We had an opportunity recently to ask Tina a few questions about the industry’s outlook for career growth in 2010, this is what Tina had to share with us….

What would you deem as a hot job for 2010 in the beauty industry?

Any job that is Ecommerce driven, I believe more and more loyal beauty fans will want to find their products on-line, so the more creative your site the better your business and those who are tops at doing this will land opportunities.

What areas in personal care do you see as growing in the near future; sales, marketing, R&D, promotion, etc.?

The way you PROMOTE your product will be critical since everyone has competition so you need a promotion that will set you apart from your competition.

What do your clients typically look for in candidates in regards to education? Does an MBA really matter?

An MBA at large multi tiered companies is essential to grow but far less significant in the entrepreneurial world. There you need a high degree of creativity and passion and the level of education takes a “backseat” to those qualities.

We feel like in the 1990’s we had the beauty department store boom, then in the 2000’s it was the spa market and now in 2010’s do you think it will remain in cyber land?

Yes……it’s quick and less stressful!

What advice would you have for a new college graduate hoping to land their first executive job in the cosmetics industry?

Take anything you can get in any brand and just get your foot in the door. If you are good someone will notice…..rent the movie “Working Girl.”

What universities usually turn out great candidates for the beauty industry on an executive level?

None in particular though serious minded Beauty Pros usually go to FIT for their Masters in Cosmetics/Fragrance once you have worked in the Beauty industry.

File:FashionInst3832.JPG

On the flip side what would you tell a mid-career level executive who may need to make a change in the cosmetics industry?

Make sure your resume isn’t “flowery” but addresses your strengths. Be prepared to negotiate salary and remember what sometimes seems like a “step backwards” could be a giant step ahead “down the road. They need to look at “the big picture.

Beauty PR: Cosmetic Tips To Save Money In This Economy

Between hair products, make-up, skin care and spa treatments, looking your best can cost you an arm and a leg. The summer is a popular time for consumers to increase spending on beauty products between tanning salons and vacation preparations. According to a 2008 study by the YWCA, women in the United States spend an average of $7 billion a year on cosmetic products and services alone each year.

Last year, a report on Beauty Consumers' Reactions to the Economy from The NPD Group, showed that women were unlikely to consider cutting spending on beauty products - even in tough economic times. In April 2009, only 42 percent said they would cut back spending on beauty before other items, versus 45 percent in November 2008.

"Beauty products and services are an easy area to reduce spending to put toward other needs," says Jenny Realo, executive vice president of CareOne Services, a company that helps consumers get out of debt and strengthen their financial footing. "By swapping salon treatments for do-it-yourself versions, you could save hundreds of dollars a month and still look fresh this summer."

In some instances, seeing an expert is worth the cost, like that six week haircut. But a lot of beauty comes from simple health and self-maintenance. There are a lot of small, cost-effective preventative steps consumers can take to avoid high costs for future care.

Love the Skin You're In

A high end product may be loaded with ingredients that promise to make your skin smoother, brighter and younger. However, what you could be left with is pricey ingredients that irritate your skin. Having great skin may be as simple as using a gentle cleanser every day. The cleanser will remove dirt, oil and dead skin cells but leave natural and necessary oils.

Here are some additional (and inexpensive!) tips for healthy, younger looking skin:

  • Use a dry brush to exfoliate your skin every morning before you shower. This removes dead skin cells and improves blood circulation to decrease puffiness. A dry brush costs less than $8 and saves you from having to buy skin creams.

  • If you need to wear make-up, look for products are that are more organic. They contain less chemicals and oils that clog up your skin and cause breakouts. Not to mention that they are light weight and provide a more natural finish. And choosing organic doesn't mean going for the most expensive brand of cosmetics. Do your research on your favorite brands. You might be surprised to learn that they, too, offer a more natural alternative.

  • Wear sun block if you're going to be outdoors for an extended period of time and avoid damage that can age the look of your skin. Consider sun block or a moisturizer with SPF if you're going to be outdoors near water, sand or even snow because of reflective intensity.

  • Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet of necessary vitamins and minerals. Be sure to get a healthy dose of vitamins A, C, E and B complex. This will keep your skin moisturized and improve your overall health!

Spa PR and Marketing: Ways to Grow Your Spa Business in a Recession

It's no surprise that the spa market has been hit hard during the economic windfall our country has been in for the last few years. Booking a spa treatment, often seen as a luxury-type item rather than a complement to wellness, is the last thing on most consumers minds when they are finding themselves in the midst of wondering how to make their next mortgage payment or if they have job security. So how can local spas retain current customers, bring in potential new ones and increase product sales?

  1. Offer incentives: Consumers live for discounts, freebies or any other incentive that gives them more value for their money. This is one reason that gift with purchases incentives are highly successful. Not only does it get them to purchase an item, but puts other items in their hands for potential repeat-purchases in the future. This could be, "20% discount for facials booked for any Tuesday of the month," or "Book a massage by X date and your next pedicure is on us!"

    The point
: Get them in the door. Sometimes consumers are on the fence about booking a treatment and only need a little nudge to do so. Incentives can be anything you can dream of, from a deep discount to date/price/time/treatment specific value.

  2. Get social. Sometimes I feel like I am preaching to the choir, but then I come across spas and spa brands who are still NOT involved with social media. Your consumers are looking for a point of contact, a knowledge base and most of all, a relationship with you. Current customers already trust you, so engage them via their social networks. Conversation brings about awareness of other treatments and products you offer, as well as pointing new potential consumers your way.

    The point:
Your competitors are already online and building those important relationships, why aren't you? Social media is not difficult to step foot into, however, don't underestimate the power and influence it can have on your business.

  3. Team up. You already have relationships with the brands you sell in-store, why not utilize them? What about reaching out to local dermatologists or health care providers to host a health and wellness event that will benefit you both? By partnering with existing spa brands and regional professionals, you extend your reach to like-minded consumers who may not have considered you otherwise. Cross promotional partnerships can be very cost effective and have long term value.

    The point
: Strategic partnering with niche industry professionals will not hurt your business, but will only enhance it.
Do you have any other tips you want to add? We'd love to hear from you in the comments.

Which products are really safe for home and baby? Don't trust the promises, verify before you buy.

Recent independent testing conducted by Skin Deep (www.cosmeticsdatabase.com) on ecoSTORE USA's Sleepy Bath Time, Baby Shampoo, Baby Body Wash, Baby Moisturizer and Baby Nappy Balm, scored them in the safest possible range.

"People need a better way to get this critical information, and need a source that breaks through the confusing claims and 'greenwashing.'  We want our moms to know the truth about what chemicals they are exposing their families to," said Lyne Appel Downing, VP of Operations for ecoSTORE USA.  "Our baby care products are not only delightful to use, they are completely safe for babies.  But how would a consumer know this for sure?"

ecoSTORE USA has found that one way is to also align themselves with watchdog organizations that get trustworthy messages out to moms.  This helps to support ecoSTORE USA's campaign – Don't Trust Us, Ask Them!

One of ecoSTORE USA's trusted partners, Healthy Child Healthy World (www.healthychild.org), a non-profit organization, inspires and empowers parents to protect children from harmful chemicals with clear, accurate, thoughtful and informative resources.

Like ecoSTORE USA, Healthy Child Healthy World's goal is simple, yet compelling: to educate parents, support protective policies, engage communities to make responsible everyday choices and to help inspire well-informed lifestyle improvements.

Pierce Mattie PR's Holiday Diet Plan

Most of us here at Pierce Mattie are feeling that tug on our waistbands after our Thanksgiving (over)indulgence. Are you? As we head into holiday party season, we know we don't want to put on any more weight...and wouldn't mind losing a few pounds in the process.

Here's a few easy tips to do just that:

Hide the candy: OK, this is a no brainer, but it is entirely possible that you still have that bag of candy hanging out from Halloween or those delicious marshmallow trees you can only find during the holidays hiding in your closet. Forget them. Sugar converts to fat. There is truth to the saying a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.

When Holiday shopping, park far out in the lot. Get in some extra exercise by avoiding the chaos of trying to obtain that coveted front space at the mall or department store and park further out in the lot. This also gives you the opportunity to work those arms when carrying the bags back when you're done shopping.

Pack small healthy snacks to munch on throughout your work day. You know it and we here at Pierce Mattie know it, you cannot avoid the daily holiday treats that make their way into the break room. If you pack small amounts of carrots sticks, celery, peppers, etc. you'll be less likely to dive into that Harry and David gourmet basket...or at least consume less of it.

Dieting during the holidays really isn't feasible, especially when every commercial and invitation you get makes food the main feature. Try things that are easy for you and that will make losing the weight for that holiday dress that much more attainable.
