I caught myself thinking about this very shift in makeup artistry when I was watching the local newsteam on my brand new HDTV. I have begun to notice the newscaster's heavy makeup with this crystal clear view.
I noticed the dark in-crease shadow very heavily applied on the women and the foundation caked atop the razor bumps of the men. What's ironic is I used to think, "Wow, these newscasters have such incredibly amazing skin!"

To better understand why this visual trickery happens I'd like to offer an analogy. If you were to climb to see a billboard up close you wouldn't see the same crisp image as the motorists from the road see. What you would see are really large boxes of color, that when viewed from afar, come together to create an image. When television is transmitted through a lower bandwidth, it is as if we are the motorists on the highway. With the increased detail that HD offers, it's like we are "closer" to the image and the subject doesn't need to exaggerated as much to be seen.
The World Digital Video Association (WDVA) is aware of the way HD is changing the makeup needs for television personalities and suggests airbrush foundation in place of the 'cake it on' technique of the past. As seen in pictures above, SDTV was a forgiving translation of the human face. Heavy makeup was needed to show up on the standard of 525 scan lines in order to enhance the one's features.
Do you think new types of makeup will be needed for this major shift in television technology? Or rather will there be different makeup techniques applied to adjust accordingly?

Wow, that's really interesting. I think it's a bit absurd to suggest there's a better quality of foundation and makeup that hasn't been explored yet...that the manufacturer's of cosmetics aren't doing everything they can to make money by helping us and our customers look good?? I'd say it's the techniques that need to improve to measure up to HD standard.
