Earth Day: Do You Know About Earth Friendly Beauty Products?

Earth Day is right around the corner and everywhere you look there are products available to promote healthy living and sustainability: celebrity vegan shoes, designer grocery bags, organic clothing, eco-friendly furniture, etc. Since my days revolve mainly around the beauty industry, I wanted to shift my focus and discuss the current status.

Women around the world wear makeup every day. However, what most people don’t think about is all of the harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients makeup contains which they are smearing and dusting onto their skin – the largest organ in the body. The skin absorbs everything, and speaking of toxic, according to a report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans of all ages carry a "body burden" of at least 148 chemicals as a result of what we put on and in our bodies.

Natural Beauty Expert Christina Marcaccini explains,

"Contrary to common belief, the skin is not a perfect barrier, and we have to be conscious of the products we use on it."

Could using natural ingredient based makeup be the new wave of the healthy living? I think it should. Why would a woman who is vegetarian, shops at the farmer’s market, and practices yoga, wake up every morning and absent mindedly apply toxic chemicals that are harmful to her body and the environment?

Luckily, there are a number of great quality, natural beauty lines that are educating consumers about the harmful ingredients women are exposing to themselves to in the name of beauty. Here are two of my favorites:

RAW Natural Beauty is a recently launched mineral makeup line spearheaded by Christina Marcaccini who will be lobbying in Washington later this month on behalf of the Natural Products Association. www.rawnaturalbeauty.com

Colorscience was created by natural beauty industry pioneer Diane Ranger who the first to create mineral makeup back in the 70s. Already the line has a number of devotees including Cameron Diaz, who swears her skin didn’t stop breaking out until she switched to using the line. www.colorscience.com
