As we all plan our resort vacations this upcoming season there is no doubt most of will head to St. Bart’s and others will cruise the Caribbean. One brand comes to mind to accessorize your wardrobe for the season: Jane A. Gordon. Pierce Mattie PR caught up with resort wear jewelry designer, Jane A. Gordon, who had this to share with us.

PM: Tell us a little bit more about Jane A. Gordon Jewelry.

JG: What sets my work apart from others is that, while it is designed to stand alone as jewelry, decorative and meant to enhance a woman's beauty, it is also filled with symbolism and metaphor, designed to enhance a woman's life and soul. Once you see the path, finding joy is delightfully simple.  Yet somehow it took me many years of darkness and pain to find my way.  I was blessed, after years of searching, to have had some epiphanies, which allowed me to make the quantum leap and see the patterns in all of my former quests. My inspiration, my passion, is to share what I have learned about finding joy. I try to do this in all aspects of my life and work, and have found that, for me, the best way is the most subtle, through the beauty of jewelry - one woman at a time.

PM: Who is your typical customer, what is she like?

JG: She is a leader.  She does not need her husband or friends to tell her what she likes; she knows herself and she knows the world around her.   Likewise, she is not dictated to by the fashion industry and trends.  The only fashion she cares about is her own personal style, which she has in abundance.

PM: How were you inspired by healing gems in creating your brand?

JG: Actually I am an accidental designer.  In the late 90's I had an idea for a business and left my career in corporate real estate to go to a dot com and see how they made money online.  When the industry went bust, I sold corporate gifts for November and December, which I liked very much.  In January, it seemed a long way until next Christmas, so I was looking for something to get through - I wanted to borrow jewelry to take to all the men I knew from the corporate world.  I did not know anyone in the jewelry business, but one person loaned me some gemstone beads.  I came home and sat on my bed with all the colors and energy glittering around me and said "I want to do this" although I was not sure what "this" was going to be or even what I meant.   I had no experience in jewelry, design or running a business.  I did not own jewelry nor had I thought about it previously.  Having made some very bad man-related decisions (a story for another day) I was $250K in debt with trashed credit.  I had $32 left to my name, so I ran to 47th street and bought needles, thread and a clasp, made a necklace, sold it, ran back to 47th street and bought two more clasps and so on and so forth and here I am today- still going.

PM: What events do you have planned either in-store or online for the fall season?

JG: At the moment I am selling on cruise ships.  On the ships I give seminars in inspiration and joy, and I also give classes in pearl and bead stringing with an eye towards finding the inner designer in everyone.   The passengers seem to love this, and I love sharing with them.  Time will tell what is next for me on land.  Whatever it is, I hope to have the opportunity in sharing the paths to joy, through my designs but also through seminars and classes and perhaps a book or two.

PM: Do you take private clients for custom work or can consumers visit you in NY?

JG: Absolutely—my pleasure.  They can contact me directly or sign up for my e-mail list.  I am also available to help organize charity events.  If anyone is interested in a "Meet the Designer" jewelry sale, I can bring many other talented artists.  It is a win-win all around which is my favorite situation.
