Still Standing Post 2009: Everyone's Cheese Has Moved in PR Land

I think if anyone was to ask what the mantra was coming out of 2009’s recession it would be Elton John’s song “I’m Still Standing.”  The PR industry especially with New York PR Firms has been shaken with numerous mergers and satellite offices shifting. This rings especially true with Bull Dog Reporter's latest newsletter that highlights not one, not two, not three but four, yes four recent PR firm mergers.

They are:

  • Strata-G Communications Announces Acquisition of Justice & Young
  • The Morris + King Company Acquires Workhouse Publicity
  • Squier Knapp Dunn Communications and Knickerbocker Consulting Merge to Form SKDKnickerbocker
  • Global Results Communications Acquires Crux

We have also witnessed this on the brand side with four recent acquisitions:

  • Calvin Klein buys Tommy Hilfiger
  • L’Oreal Acquires Essie Nails
  • Avon Products acquires Tiny Tillia
  • Orchard Brands acquires Linen Source

We believe the attributes needed for 2010 are to remain flexible, willing to let go of yesterday, focus on the present and most importantly remain gracious and grateful for what you have at hand. We at Pierce Mattie strive for this virtue. It's not always easy or comfortable. As we stated in an earlier post, RFP activity is picking up and the dialogue especially coming from WSJ reflects apparel, jewelry and beauty stocks are on the rise.

In times of change I always turn to Spencer Johnson’s easy to read 1990’s fable; Who Moved My Cheese. It's a little book that we all love to hate, but is packed with the best insight for moments of professional adaption.

Hem & Haw, the two characters in Who Moved My Cheese learn:

  • Change Happens - They Keep Moving The Cheese
  • Anticipate Change - Get Ready For The Cheese To Move
  • Monitor Change- Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting Old
  • Adapt To Change Quickly- The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese, The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese
  • Change- Move With The Cheese
  • Enjoy Change! - Savor The Adventure And Enjoy The Taste Of New Cheese!
  • Be Ready To Change Quickly And Enjoy It Again & Again- They Keep Moving The Cheese.

We wish the agencies and brands listed above the best during these times of movement, the dust will settle for the better.
