Lifestyle PR: Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP.com

It seems that everyone has a blog of some sort lately. Some focus on personal matters, some on fashion and beauty, others on special hobbies and interests. Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP.com is a combination of all of these, and is a surprisingly personal lifestyle guide. Lately it seems like the Oscar-winner has been getting flack for her how-to guide, but what seems to be the real issue here? Is it that the actress is not an expert or is it that fact that she’s a celebrity?

Ms. Paltrow’s weekly newsletter’s are both insightful and personal, and run the gamut of healthy recipes to gift ideas. The entries feature educated, worldly concepts for leading a healthier lifestyle. What sets GOOP apart from other popular lifestyle sites is the touching, personal messages she adds to each weeks entry, which in the land of Hollywood where publicity is about who is going into rehab, this is refreshing.

She recommends luxe accessories from Balenciaga and Tod’s (for which she’s the spokeswoman) and affordable tank tops from Zooey and American Apparel. The subject matter is never too heavy, nor light-hearted, but perfect for those looking to improve the way they live their life. I have religiously been following the newsletters for a few weeks, trying to detox my body through her astonishingly delicious recipes for a weeklong elimination diet. She excerpts Dr. Alejandro Junger’s upcoming book Clean for getting one’s body back on track and recommends simple, delicious recipes with uncomplicated ingredients readily available at your local supermarket. She also recommends some of her favorite places to stay in some of the world’s most vibrant cities, such as The London West Hollywood in West Hollywood, California, and Hotel Saint Vincent in Paris. With this, the actress also recommends favorite restaurants, much like a close friend might, ranging from Asian/nouvelle French cuisine at Market in France, to friend Mario Batali’s acclaimed Babbo in New York.

The site is clear and easy to follow, not fussy like others so laden with pictures and video clips. More importantly, the site is neither self-indulgent nor superficial. She seems to have seamlessly parlayed her successful acting career into a lifestyle brand, with an upcoming cookbook due in Fall 2010, and having also traveled with renowned Chef Mario Batali on a trip to Spain for the show “Spain…On the Road Again.” Recently, The New York Times also questioned the nature of the website, but I think GOOP is the perfect remedy for a society so bogged down with harsh times. Her website is more personal than other cookie-cutter celebrity sites that are plaguing the internet recently and I believe that's what will help GOOP remain relevant beyond her celebrity status. What do you think?

Linda:

I agree with you, I like the site. I subscribe to it and feel it is fine.
I'm not sure why people have to trash it, if you don't like it don't go to it. It is that simple, just like the site.

Christian:

So how much are Gwenyth's people paying for you to write this. As a PR professional its smells like a paid placement.. there in lies the blog problem... now do we really think Ms Paltrow is the one overseeing the blog's editorial content? I am sure that ith her OCD she may be too busy washing her.. I think you have not been in this industry long enough and/or are getting paid to rite this... or you have honestly in my opinion drunk too much Kool-Aid

Hi Christian, thanks for the comment. But, sorry, we have nothing to do with Gwenyth's site nor do we accept payment to blog about the people or brands that we do; we just write about things going on in the lifestyle/PR niche and look to start discussions about it.
