Carine Roitfeld to Replace Anna Wintour at Vogue?

It had been rumored earlier this year that Anna Wintour was looking to retire from Vogue at the end of 2008, which fueled speculation as to who her predecessor would be. Certainly Ms. Wintour has created a lot of intrigue around herself as a "brand" with editors and fashion junkies hanging on her every word for the possibility of insight into her iconic brilliance. But one has to wonder if the futility of the magazine industry prompted the consideration for retirement, a sort of going out on top before the situation among American print publications continues a slow demise.

While the Wall Street Journal quotes S.I. Newhouse claiming the rumor of Carine Roitfeld in works to make her move to New York to step into Ms. Wintour's place come January as the "Silliest rumor I ever heard," one can only hope it to be true. If indeed Anna Wintour is walking away from Vogue before it potentially falls victim to the economy and shift in consumer behavior to digital media, Carine Roitfeld has the background and talent to breathe some new life into the magazine, possibly saving it from the fate Men's Vogue has faced this year or the folding that so many other publications met, such as DNR.

However, saving it for how long would be the question. Vogue still is and will always be the bible of all magazines, but with the country in a recession and print being replaced by it's digital siblings, will it continue to innovate and remain the leader in the industry? Will the changing of the guard to Carine Roitfeld help fuel the iconic magazine forward? Or will Anna Wintour's retirement put Vogue into retirement as well?

Stevie Crisosto:

Well I definately agree that Carine Roitfeld is the woman to bring Vogue back to life. She has so much experience and all the connections needed. She has worked with Mario Testino for years as well as Tom Ford and Gucci.

I know Vogue is struggling to hold on right now, but I wonder if they've looked into lowering the price of their magazine, even if it's just temporarily. I love Vogue, but as a college student I know I can't always afford to grab it. I hope it survives!
