Men's Underwear: An inside view to what men are thinking about boxers, briefs and fashionable "package wrapping".

As a woman I can certainly tell you what I think about men’s underwear. I like a man in a fresh pair of clean, crisp white underwear. I prefer boxer briefs over anything else and my man better not be wearing silly underwear or outrageously colored, or else I will have to ask him to put his pants back on. I like to be the one wearing all the colors! I often wondered if guy’s thought of their underwear as an important piece of fashion. I know my very first boyfriend did not, as evidenced by some animal print silk bikini number he used to wear..."eww!" Laughing when you see someone's underwear is a sure fire way to ruin the mood…just FYI.

So in order to find out what men really think, I asked a few fashionable men at Pierce Mattie their thoughts. I was surprised at some of their answers. I've included 3 of the 8 full interviews for your review. Here is a summary of my findings:

• Pierce Mattie men prefer briefs over boxers.

• They wont spend more then $35 for a pair of underwear

• Sex played a role in purchasing first pair of fashionable underwear

• They say marketing and packaging doesn't play a big role in what underwear they choose, however the industry data all says marketing & packaging plays a huge role and influences what girlfriends / boyfriends say they like on a man.

• The office leading brands: Old Navy, 2Xist & Calvin Klein

What age were you the first time you personally bought your first pair of underwear?

Fashionable Guy #1: 15 years old – right when I lost my virginity.

Fashionable Guy #2: 14, when I had my first job. No comment on the virginity.

Fashionable Guy #3: Around 13 or 14.

What did you wear back then?

Fashionable Guy #1: Briefs – I have always only worn briefs because I need the frontal support.

Fashionable Guy #2: I’ve always worn just briefs.

Fashionable Guy #3: Boxers

When do you first remember underwear being fashionable?

Fashionable Guy #1: I went to a foam underwear party when I was 16 with a bunch of girls and guys from high school it was a ‘rave’ and we all partied in our underwear – then I knew I had to wear stylish briefs, etc. The year was 1991 and they were 2Xist.

Fashionable Guy #2: I was probably right around the time I hit puberty and wanted to be fashionable down to my tightie whities. This was probably around 1994/95 when I was in Junior High.

Fashionable Guy #3: Just recently actually.

Does advertising, magazine ads or packaging influence you to purchase underwear? 1 to 5; 1 being not at all, 5 being absolutely.

Fashionable Guy #1: 1 – I never look at ads

Fashionable Guy #2: 4- Ads and packaging do influence me when buying underwear because regardless if I have the model’s body/package, it in some ways makes me think I’ll look just as good.

Fashionable Guy #3: 2

Does price influence your purchase of underwear? What is the highest price you will pay for underwear?

Fashionable Guy #1: No – price never wavers me either way – the most expensive piece of underwear I bought…Gucci Briefs were $350.00 each, Prada Briefs were $275.00 each and Burberry’s were $50.00 each.

Fashionable Guy #2: Price does influence me somewhat. I am pretty loyal to a few brands including 2xist and Calvin Klein. I also love Rips. The most expensive pair of underwear was probably around $100 for one brief. These were Dolce and Gabana though, and I didn’t pay for them – they were a gift. Otherwise, the most expensive pair I own is probably my Rips briefs, which go for about $18-24 each.

Fashionable Guy #3: I never thought about it. Aren’t they all about $10.00-$15.00/pair?

Name all the brands of underwear you've purchased.

Fashionable Guy #1: Mundo Unico Classic (those are my favorite pairs), Gucci, Prada, Dior For Men, Gregg Homme, Donna Karen, GO Software, DKNY for Men, Sauvage, Burberry, Polo by Ralph Lauren, Miu Miu, Dunhill, Barney’s Private Label, Nautica, Ginch Gonch, Yves Saint Laurent, American Apparel (hated!), and C-IN2 (horrible).

Fashionable Guy #2: Calvin Klein, 2Xist and Rips.

Fashionable Guy #3: Gap Boxers and 2Xist.

So men, what is the verdict? Feel free to give your answers to the questions in the comments!
