Halloween: A $4.96 Billion Dollar Industry. Tips On How To Get Your Brand Involved

In the past twenty years there has been a change occurring when it comes to Halloween. Back when I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, Halloween was a specific children’s holiday. Then in the mid-eighties things began to change and Haunted Houses and adult costume parties began to take off.

Adult costume parties and Haunted Houses continue to increase in popularity every year. What has gone from a one night event, now becomes an entire weekend of parties solely reserved for the young at heart and a month-long event for Haunted Houses and Haunted Hayrides. Even farmers have cashed in by offering haunted labyrinths through a corn maze.

This year Americans are estimated to spend $4.96 Billion (yes billion) dollars on Halloween costumes, decorations, novelty items, candy and attending haunted houses. That is a significant increase from the $3.29 Billion spent one year ago according to The National Retail Federation.

So how can you cash in on this increasingly popular retail holiday? Of course, partnering with a PR firm can coordinate all this for you, but if you don’t have the budget here are some ideas:

(1.)Ideas for Beauty Brands: Send out newsletters to faithful consumers reminding them how to treat their skin after not-so-friendly stage makeup or wearing effects like scars, scabs and spirit gum. It's a chance to mention a product name and focus your customer's attention there.

(2). Ideas for Fashion Brands: Remember to start pitching your fashion for Halloween articles in July, as most publications are working 3 months ahead. Take advantage of Bloggers and online portals with a creative Halloween theme photo shoot.

(3). Ideas for LifeStyle Brands: Beverages should try and get in on the many celebrations. Halloween opens up the door to sell new and interesting liquors like Hpnotiq, coffees or teas, hot cocoa for haunted houses and family oriented events.

If your brand is a little awkward, co-brand with another brand or jump in a gift bag at an event. Goodie bags and swag are always a great way to reach high society event attendees.

Most retailers are cashing in, are you?
