Former Athlete Gains Name Recognition, but Not in Sports

We’ve all heard of people branching out and diversifying their goals and objectives. A clothing designer might introduce a fragrance; movies may turn into action figures, but an athlete becoming a political figure? I guess stranger things have happened, just look at Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Hall of Fame football icon Lynn Swann declared his candidacy for governor of Pennsylvania a few months ago and according to today’s reports, he seems to have enough votes for the GOP endorsement. Though a surprise to many sports fans, Swann’s decision was predictable, according to his political committee who has been raising money for about a year.

Swann’s resume now reads football player, television commentator and political candidate. In the PR world, we’re talking 3 skews. Now it’s up to Swann’s publicist or managerial team to set up events that will build faith and comfort in the eyes of the Pennsylvanian. Whether we’re talking sports or politics, PR is still a necessity when it comes to introducing yourself to a new audience.
